Battle of Columbus Volunteer Information What to bring/not bring:

There is not a lot of space to store your belongings and the space available is not monitored. Bring a water bottle, snacks, and a bag of personal belongings if you like, but please do not bring big purses, electronics, etc.

What to eat: BOC will provide lunch, water, and snacks to BOC volunteers and there are usually a couple of food vendors at the event. You are welcome to bring your own food.

What to wear: Wear dark colored pants and comfortable shoes. Depending on your time commitment, you may receive a volunteer t-shirt at the event. The building is often cool in the morning and warm in the afternoon. If you are sensitive to temperature changes it is a good idea to dress in layers.

Battle of Columbus Terminology Forms:

Taekwondo Sport Poomsae - Only Taekwondo (Also known as Kukkiwon Poomsae) Sport Poomsae is the World Taekwondo Federation/Kukkiwon compulsory poomsae

used at sanctioned national and international competitions such as USAT Nationals and the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships. Competitors must perform the designated form(s) for their age and rank group randomly determined by the Tournament Official.

• Compulsory/designated poomsae will be selected and published online one week prior to the competition date. (See attached lists of Compulsory Poomsae for color and black belts.)

• Sport Poomsae scoring is very specific and differs from the scoring of Open/Creative Poomsae.

Open Style/Creative Poomsae – All disciplines In Open Style/Creative poomsae, a competitor may perform any form including

"traditional" forms such as Palgwe, Chang Hon, Kee Cho, Pal Chi, school specific forms, or freestyle forms composed by the competitor. No weapons, breaking, or props may be used. Music may be used, but the competitor is responsible for their own sound system.

Sparring:

Olympic Style Sparring – Olympic style sparring is conducted as a continuous match of a set period of time. The match clock is not stopped for point scoring, only for penalties or injuries.

Point Sparring – Point style matches are conducted for a set period of time but the match is stopped after each point is scored and the competitors return to the center to continue the match. Karate, Tang Soo Do, and Gumdo use point style sparring as does ITF/ATA taekwondo schools.

Arnis (stick fighting) and Sanshou use an entirely different system of scoring.

Jujitsu Gi and No-Gi Grappling – Jujitsu competitions are divided into Gi (uniformed) and No-Gi (shorts and shirt) grappling competitions. In Gi grappling, competitors must wear a traditional heavy cotton or woolen uniform (similar to a traditional style Karate uniform). In No-Gi grappling, competitors wear more common “western” style shorts and shirts.

Breaking:

Creative Breaking – Competitors have three minutes to set-up, break up to 10 boards, and clean-up broken boards. Competitors may use up to 10 boards and as many techniques as they would like within the time allowed. Competitors are responsible for securing board holders prior to their performance.

Distance Breaking – Competitors break a board with a flying side kick. Each round gets progressively longer in distance. Competitors have up to three chances each round to break

12

Page 13: Di · 2020-01-19 · Gumdo/Haidong Gumdo Robert Gross, Robert Frankovich, Shawn Oeder Hapkido/Aikido Roy Bushman/Gerrald Swint Judo Ohio Judo Association-Russ, Scott Schwab Jujitsu/Grappling

their board using proper technique. Jumps must start before “foul” line and the kick must be completed with both feet off the ground.

Power Breaking (Hand or Elbow) – Competitors place boards and spacers on a stand and break as many as possible with one strike.

Results Envelope It is important to fill out as much information as you have in order to ensure accurate results reporting after the event.

Circle or check all criteria that apply to the division. Write in any info that may not be listed on the envelope, such as an age group.

Make sure first and last names for all three winners are correct on the front of the envelope.

Place all score sheets and competitor tickets in the envelope for each division.

Give the envelope to the winner to be presented at the awards table. All three winners will go together to get medals.

Please announce all winners of every division before sending to the awards table!
