Smart City: The future of India:

Urban experts say, around 30% of Indian population lives in cities, while its share in Indian GDP is around 60%. That speaks volume about the significance of urbanization for growing Indian economy. However, it’s not always a blessing!!!

With India heading towards a robust growth, urbanization issues, challenges too are cropping up. Haphazardly planned cities with conventional amenities are bound to crumble under the pressure of accommodating more population, leading to challenges like sanitation, pollution, water, and electricity supply, and drainage system among others. Now the question arises – how to overcome the impending challenge.

The concept of Smart City:

Experts from urbanization, town planning and architect sector have been making efforts to come out with a plan, addressing challenges of urbanization. Focus is – to develop cities, offering quality life. Concept of Smart City is rapidly attracting attention of growing economies like India as they offer excellent infrastructure namely water, sanitation, electricity, drainage, road, and transport, healthcare, commercial activity, entertainment, and education among others.

Project Vision:

To develop Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) as global manufacturing and trading hub i.e. "The engine for economic resurgence of the country" which is supported by world class infrastructure.

"The Development Plan, taking into account the DMIC objectivs and goals should focus towards creating and enabling environmentto protects local industries, enhance investment climate, improve quality of life, upgrade human skils, create world class infrastucture and attract global investment".

Project goals are to double the employement potential, triple industrial output and quadruple exports from the region in next five years.

Location Profile

DHOLERA is situated in Ahmedabad district in the Gulf of Khambhat-

Identified as a Greenfield port, it will be developed along with private sector participation by Dholera Port Limited (promoted by J K Group and Adani Group).

Dholera is in proximity with the coastal line. It is covered by water faces on three sides, namely, on the east face by Gulf of Khambhat, on the north side by Bavaliari creek and on southern side by Sonaria creek.

To develop Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) as global manufacturing and trading hub i.e. "The engine for economic resurgence of the country" which is supported by world class infrastructure.

Proximity to Ahmedabad has provided Dholera a strong locational advantage with a vibrant manufacturing base and investment scenario.

The project is spread over an area of 35,000 hectares. The processing area which is proposed is 14,000 hectares and rest is non- processing zone.

Dholera port is primarily involved into handling general cargo, dry bulk, containers, ship breaking and chemical handling facilities.

It was Hon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who took the historic decision of Dholera SIR when he was heading the State of Gujarat as Chief Minister, paving the way for nation’s first ever Smart City.

Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation Ltd (DMICDC)

A dedicated freight corridor, connecting Delhi, and Mumbai, covering six states would be one of Dholera’s USP. To render push to its speedy development, an exclusive organization Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation Ltd (DMICDC) has been formed.

Gujarat Infrastructure Development Board (GIDB) has also been roped in to execute the plan, a would be landmark in the history of not only Gujarat but also India.

The Dholera SIR’s vision document laid huge emphasis on the execution of DMIC. It would be planned, constructed using best of the breed technology, resources, tools, and equipment, making it as one of the identities of the global project, and placing the region as one of the leading manufacturing, trading, and services hub.

Proposed industrial nodes within the periphery of DMIC: 25

The length of this dedicated freight corridor, running between Delhi, and Mumbi is – 1483 km, about 38% of the total length falls within the periphery of the state of Gujarat. The 150 km area on the either side of the DFC (Dedicated Freight Corridor) would be developed as DMIC.
