Los Angeles County High Desert Multi-Ambulatory Care Center

Lancaster requires a new ambulatory care center to service the Antelope Valley, and the MACC will serve as a replacement hospital for the current care facility on 60th Avenue in Lancaster. The new location is 4th and I Streets in Lancaster, in the middle of a residential neighbor-hood.

The center will serve to reinvigorate the suburban landscape and be open to the public for any Emergency, surgical and outpatient procedures.

Lee, Burkhart, Liu was commissioned to carry this project from Schecmatic Design to Construction Documents, and guide a Design Buld fi rm in the Construction Documentation in order to retain the integrity of the User Group Agreements.

As a public project, we were concerned with address-ing public issues such as landscaping, environmental awareness, and of course, health. The building is a model of sustainability and will achieve LEED Silver when it is completed in Summer 2014.

I was responsible for drawing the Building Information Model in Revit under the project management of ar-chitects and planners. As a designer, I presented the project in the majority of User Group meetings and coordinated the Revit effort with engineers, architec-tural draftsman, and client interpretation.

The Revit Model was a deliverable, along with paper documentation, to the County of Los Angeles in January of 2011. LBL was awarded a Commendation from the County for its efforts on this project, and the Revit model was used for animations to the residents of the City of Lan-caster, where it was lauded and served to excite the residents about the prospect of renewal in their desert landscape.

Building 22C UC Irvine Medical Center

The CDDC (Comprehensive Digestive Disease Center) is a tenant on UC Irvine’s Medical Campus and as a highly regarded practice tied to the newly renovated Douglas Hospital, the UC Regents and the client agreed to upgrade the facilities and upgrade new corridor along the campus in the City of Orange.

The existing facility is sandwiched between Building 23 and Building 22A; the 24,600 SF building steps back to the south from the main drive. As the building sits on a North-South axis and looks clear across a plaza to Douglas Hospital, we took pains to maintain its status as a campus thoroughfare while upgrading the ground-fl oor corridors. The fi nished design adds a third fl oor and provides six new operating rooms for the practice in a 34,921 SF envelope.

Due to funding concerns, LBL was asked to design two options for the renovation, seen above. The third fl oor was optioned in the Bid Docu-ments as either a shell or a full build out. A creative use of phasing in Revit allowed us to build one Revit model with three options all the way through to 100% CD Submittal.

My responsibilities for the project at LBL were to build and maintain the Building Information Model through the medical planning, and Schemat-ic Design to Construction Documentation phases.

In addition to planning and architectural services, LBL was asked to present our design to potential donors for the project; my renderings - seen to the left and right - were used in conjuction with NavisWorks animations and impressed the donors enough to provide full funding for the project with a sizable grant. We completed 100% CD documents in October of 2011. Construction is scheduled for 2015.

UCLA PRIME Renovation

To accommodate growing demand for diag-nosis and testing through telemedicine, UC campuses are upgrading and expanding laboratory space. LBL was asked to improve the lab and sub-specialty clinic in the UCLA Center for Health Sciences, adjacent to the School of Dentistry.

The basement level laboratory will be de-molished and refi nished as an open plan lab with specialty casework, as seen to the left. The second fl oor and a portion of the fi rst fl oor will be redesigned as new offi ces for the pathologists on staff, while most of the Scope lies in reconfi guring the HVAC to exhaust air from the basement to the roof through the thin existing framework.

This project is in Construction Documen-tation and my responsibilities lie primarily with Revit coordination, implementation and drafting, as this is mostly engineering work. I lead the LBL BIM and drafting on the proj-ect, working direclty with the Project Archi-tect and the users to present a fi nal design solution in the coming months

Cedars Sinai/THO Infusion Pharmacy

Although this project is minimal in total area (~2100 SF), it is a very complex equipment and engineering solution that we employed for this renovation and refurbishment in Beverly Hills, CA. The client was very specifi c about limiting cost and visual pollution on the roof, so we explored various HVAC solutions in order to exceed USB 797 requirements while mitigating construction invasiveness.

The practice will remain open during costruction, which will start in the second week of March 2012.

Cedars Sinai/THO Infusion Pharmacy

My responsibilities for the project ranged from project management to Revit coordination, implementation and drafting. After measuring the site conditions, I drafted the Building Information Model and we used it to medi-cally plan and design the new space. I also generated a series of pamphlets, InDesign presentations, and render-ings for User Group meetings and presentations to the Board and the City of Beverly Hills.

Relocating the existing pharmacy and designing the new reception area was much easier due to coordination with MEP and structural engineers through Revit. The client and users also benefi ted from the model, as we repeat-edly used it in meetings as an illustrative element for both medical planning and aesthetic design decisions.

We plan on using the BIM with the contractor in order to insure a rapid pace and a detailed account of materials and equipment for the construction period. LBL plans on obtaining a Certifi cate of Occupancy for the client by the beginning of Summer 2012.

Hope College Museum of Art

Through a series of design meetings and after many iterative processes, the Principal of C Concept Designand I delivered a Design Package to the Trustees in October of 2009. The purpose of our explorations was to delineate a program and Schematic Design for a new exhibition hall in the center of Hope College, in Holland, Michigan, USA.

A 10,000 SF, two-story structure will be under construc-tion shortly, and the curvilinear glass facade will illumi-nate the talented artists of this community.

Sag Harbor House

When a friend of the Principal arrived one day, I was intro-duced to an opera singer who wanted a relaxed, modern house in which to retire.

The Long Island house had been purchased years earlier, after the fi rst owners of the prefabricated dwelling moved on. By incorporating Dutch and Californian elements into an East Coast beach house, we were able to double the livable space of her property.

Construction has been completed and the new pool, kitchen and living spaces provide much requiescence for the happy contralto.
