Dear Parents, We had a successful month in April as we welcomed spring and warmer weather. Congratulations to all of the students who achieved honor roll last quarter. Congratu-lations to all students who are currently taking AP exams! I applaud your efforts in taking rigorous course work that will benefit you in college. Congratulations to all NHS and NJHS inductees! We look forward to your leadership. As we finish the year, we are not winding down. We need to finish the year strong! The recent band concerts and school musical are a testament to this commitment! Con-tinue to strive for high grades and complete all course-work. Go Admirals! Sincerely, Mohan R. giving teachers an oppor-
tunity to make adjust-
ments to classroom prac-
tice immediately following
the early release. Addi-
tionally, because several
other schools in DoDEA
have also scheduled their
collaboration on Thursday
afternoons, opportunities
are increased for profes-
sional growth beyond the
walls of our own schools,
made possible by a num-
ber of technological sup-
ports provided by DoDEA.
Dismissal time on Thurs-
days will be 1345 for the
DGF ES and 1400 for the
DGF MHS. If you have
questions about the early
release, please contact the
school.
In a strategic shift to better
prepare students for life
after K-12 education and to
smooth the transition from
DoDEA to other education
agencies for students who
migrate in and out of our
system, DoDEA has begun
the process of implement-
ing College and Career
Readiness Standards
(CCRS) in both Math and
English Language Arts. In
order to support the in-
structional shifts that are
required for successful
CCRS implementation, the
DGF calendar has been ad-
justed for School Year 2016
-17 to provide faculty col-
laboration time during
which teachers will co-plan
lessons, review student
performance and monitor
data to support appropriate
shifts in practice during the
implementation period.
DoDEA Headquarters has
mandated that every school
has time built in the duty
day for teachers to discuss
instructional practices, re-
view assessments, design
instructional materials, and
collaborate with one anoth-
er.
Within the SY 2016-17 cal-
endar, weekly early release
days are scheduled to pro-
vide appropriate collabora-
tion time to support the use
of the new standards. All
teachers will collaborate in
Professional Learning
Teams (PLTs) for periods of
75 minutes each Thursday
afternoon. Thursday was
selected as the optimal day
for early release in order to
maximize momentum be-
tween the collaborative pe-
riod and classroom time by
DGF Rota MHS Principal, Mr. Mohan Vaswani, and ES
Principal, Mr. Walter Wilhoit, look forward to the changes
and the improved calendar for school year 2016-2017.

Academic Activities: Rota Science Symposium Academic Activities: Rota Science Symposium Academic Activities: Rota Science Symposium
Sixth and seventh grade students presented 60 original science re-
search projects in the Rota Science Symposium, May 12th, in the
MHS gym. The primary goal of the science research program is to
promote original research and experimentation in the sciences and
to recognize students for their outstanding achievement. It is hoped
that students are encourage to continue their interest and participa-
tion in the sciences and perhaps make careers in sciences.
Many thanks to the volunteer judges, parent volunteers and sup-
porters!
In the photo at the left are the Best-of-Show winners. From the
left are 6th grade student Chance Stelzig, 3rd place, 7th grade
student Jonah Umayam, 1st Place, and 7th grade student
Cameron Rivera, 2nd Place.
Left: Kaitlin Simon, 7th
grade, is discussing her pro-
ject with a judge. Presenters
develop higher-order think-
ing skills and integrate
learning across disciplines
through the process of scien-
tific inquiry, preparing a
scientific presentation, and
delivering a presentation All
of these skills will benefit
them in their pursuits.
Above: Jessica Scoppa, 6th grade, is
discussing her project with a judge.
The volunteer judges complete the
experience and help presenters gain
self-confidence.
Students learn a tremendous amount of science in the process,
and they get to meet judges who share their interests in sci-
ence. Sixth grade students Owen Bond, left, and Carlos Lindo
are being interviewed in the Best-of-Show session by a group
of judges. Above: Gabe Lopez in front of his presentation
board. Students were guided in development of
their ideas for research and in presentation ex-
pectations. The students all did well! Congratulations!

Wednesday, April 7, 90 DGF Rota MHS students and 18 chaperones traveled to Seville. One chaper-
one commented, “That was one of the best field trips I have ever taken!” The tour group included
the 6th grade class and the members of the Art Club. Students were fascinated by the visit to Italica,
and found the Contemporary Art Museum mind-boggling! The group divided into two groups at the
Parque Santa Maria between the Archaeological and Decorative Museums. Art, History, and Lan-
guage Arts lessons filled a packet that students used to guide their learning experience on this fun,
educational trip! Thank you chaperones Mrs. Hall, Mrs. Leonard, Mrs. Diaz, Mrs. Aderhold, Mrs.
Arroyo, Mrs. Cobello, Mrs. England, Mr. Vaswani, Mrs. Dignan, Mrs. Owins, Mr. and Mrs. Scoppa,
Mrs. Stelzig, Mrs. Gentry, Mrs. Wilson, and Dr. Himmler for going with us on this great field trip!
Thank you especially to Linda White for planning an enjoyable and educational trip!
