Chapter Directors 2008 - Jim & Tish Jones

As I am writing this article, we have just returned from the Texas District Rally in Corpus Christi. I must say that the District Staff did an excellent job! There were some small snafu's, I will not tell a fib, but after I got to thinking about it, the shear coordination that is required to put on such a Rally is huge! So, the next time you see one of the District Staff, please thank them for the work they are putting in and did put in for the Rally and their daily dedication to GWRRA and making our lives more fun! Sometimes we tend to forget that all the positions up through the regional staff are all volunteer positions. I, too, am guilty of this and have to remind myself that these folks are doing all of this because they want to help. They get no payment for their time or services. The same is true for your Chapter Staff. None of the folks on the Chapter R Staff gets any payment for the services they provide. I can tell you, as someone who has been on staff for 5 years, they work super hard to make your experiences as fun and safe as possible. All these folks take many hours out of their own time to keep the Chapter running. Let's look at them: Your ACD's do things like getting those great Dinner Ride Gift Certificates each month, and they make sure the restaurants know we are coming. They send out birthday and anniversary cards each month and, when needed, make sure we get sympathy cards and flowers out. They lead and plan rides so that you can relax and enjoy the ride and invite new members to GWRRA to come out and enjoy a ride or meetings with us. They also help us to get our advertisements signed up each year. The ACD's are also responsible for covering the CD when Tish and I cannot be at an activity. Your Treasurer is also more than you may think. This person keeps track of expenses and income so that we can report to the district and tax man at the end of the year. She manages the checkbook for us and ensures that expenses are being approved by the right people. Basically, she protects our money from the chapter. The Educators keep up with levels and the latest in safety equipment so that they can help you ride safe. They also coordinate safety classes so that you can maintain your levels. They are also responsi-ble for generating a report each month to the region on how we are doing in our safe riding, things such as how many classes were offered during the month, how many folks attended the rides, were there any mishaps. All this comes from your educators. The Couple of the Year is also heavily involved. They meet and greet all new members and visitors and ensure that they feel welcome. They help us with ensuring that we are ready for activities such as Dress Competitions and are very much involved with ensuring that the staff keeps to the spirit of GWRRA. They are our cheerleaders!

Chapter Directors 2008 - Jim & Tish Jones

The Newsletter Editor has to collect all these great articles each month for you to enjoy. This is not easy, as we often forget until the last minute, and she comes around to remind us. The editor also verifies that our sponsors’ advertisements are correct for the newsletter, that we distribute newslet-ters to those sponsors, and mail out newsletters to those that need a copy sent to them. Did you know that we have a Ride Coordinator? Yes, we have a great Ride Coordinator couple. Ross and Liz work hard to set up these overnight rides that we have. Ross leads the dinner rides almost every month, and they are always giving suggestions for rides in the future. The Webmaster keeps the web calendar updated with the latest information on the Chapter. He also makes sure all the information on all the pages is correct and up to date. This can be mind boggling at times! The Scrapbook Editor is also very important. This person gathers photos of the chapter and puts them into a format that we can share with others, along with maintaining our history. After all we would be nothing if not for our history. I guess what I am trying to say is that all of these folks work behind the scenes, and unless you attend the staff meetings, you may not realize just how much they do. Tish and I definitely understand and could not even attempt to be your CD's without these folks. They really do deserve your and our thanks. And just in case you do not remember exactly who all these folks are, here is a list: John and Ruth Fuls Assistant Chapter Directors Brian and Tina Neal Assistant Chapter Directors Rebecca Herman Treasurer Gary and Alice Meyer Educators Donnie and Linda Holley Couple of the Year Don and Cheryl Baker Newsletter Editors Ross and Liz Crum Ride Coordinators Donna Thompson Scrapbook Editor Brian Neal Webmaster Please be sure to thank them the next time you see them. Ramblings from the ACD’S CORNER John Fuls

The fun & ride events have begun! We’ve had the Region ’H’ and Texas District Rallies, and more are just ahead, plus the Chapter Rallies are starting to occur. Also as a Chapter, we have a lot of lunch and dinner rides scheduled. There are numerous events and reasons to get out on our motorcycles, as though we needed an excuse! Some of the Chapter members attended the Regional ‘H’ Rally in Marshall, TX and then the Texas District Rally in Corpus Christi, TX. Ruth and I were among the members that went to Corpus Christi, mostly drawn by the opportunity to ride the bike onto the deck of the Navy aircraft carrier USS Lexington. This drew many folks from around Texas and around the nation to the rally. I think 356 Goldwings were elevated from the ramp up to the deck of the carrier, at about 40 bikes per lift. After a 3-deck ship stairway walk down, we were served a BBQ dinner. Then after 3-deck climb back to the flight deck, we had time to view the planes on the deck, before being let down on the elevator in an after-dark descent. A once-in-a-lifetime experience! We now seem to be in the erratic spring weather here in TX. Some days are just great for getting out and riding, but on some others, one is almost afraid to get far from a storm cellar. However, this soon will give way to our regular Texas summer, where the only obstacle is the heat. It’s time we began thinking about how to cope with that: frequent stops, drinking plenty of liquids, etc. There are a lot of good times ahead, so lets take advantage of the opportunities! And….as always, ride carefully, ride smart, don’t make a mess! John Fuls ACD GWRRA TX-R

Jack and Jill went up the hill...to get their parents’ car keys If you point your nose in just the right direction, you can smell the new plastic of a fresh driver’s li-cense. That’s right, it’s almost summer and, a new batch of 16 year old drivers who can’t see over the hood will be unleashed to prove they haven’t a clue as how to drive. Jack has to prove to his friends that his dad’s car can do a burn-out; Jill is thinking how to get to the mall the fastest way for the shoe sale. We’re caught in the middle. It’s just 1000 or so per high school, and I want rubber bumpers on all 4 sides of my bike! Sorry, almost lost it for a second. I’m not saying they can’t drive, rather that their brains aren’t working half the time, and add to the mix a cell phone glued to the side of the head. I watched cars go by my of-fice and counted how many young kids had cell phones. Is this a right of passage, like in our time when we had blue jeans with the holes in them? Ok, so I rant just a little, but it’s hard to be safe when these new drivers think mom and dad’s car is safe to be in just because of how big it is. I just want to point out be safe and watch out for Jack and Jill, and if you see Pe-ter just get out of his way. Be Safe Ride Long, Brian Neal

GETTING YOUR BIKE READY Routine Maintenance Last month we talked about the importance of doing a pre-ride inspection; T-CLOCS. Since T-CLOCS is a quick inspec-tion of your bike, let’s say you’ve now found a problem. Now let’s talk about maintenance. While it’s called routine mainte-nance, you need to make sure it’s your routine, as well. It does consist of scheduled tasks or checks on your bike to keep it running and running well. The Motorcycle Owner’s Manual – Each bike comes with a Motorcycle Owners Manual filled with information not only on how to operate it, but what is needed to maintain it. Whether your bike is still under the manufacturer’s warranty or not, it is critical that you fol-low each of the recommended services at the service intervals listed. Some of these service items are based on mileage, while others are based on time lapsed, and others are listed as needed. Maintenance is typically listed as INSPECT, CLEAN, ADJUST, LUBRICATE, or RE-PLACE. Inspect, Clean, Adjust, Lubricate, Replace – Many of the items listed in the IN-SPECT list can be checked during T-CLOCS; Tires and Wheels, including brake pads; Oil and Fluids, including the clutch fluid, brake fluid, and coolant reservoirs. Some items may take some extra steps to INSPECT, including removal of some plastic parts or other items to view. INSPECT does not mean to bypass any items that needs to be taken care of at that time. This is the time to do or schedule the service if there are any issues or problems. The RE-PLACE items are usually ‘wear and tear’ items, such as: Tires, Oil & Oil Filter, Coolant Flush, Brake & Clutch Fluid Change, etc. When looking at your maintenance schedule, you may notice that some items are listed as INSPECT as well REPLACE. So make sure you’re looking at the right line for each item you are checking. Wrenching vs Repair Shop – Many, if not most items on your maintenance list can be done in your garage, however many of us decide to take them to a dealer or repair shop for completion. It is a personal decision on how to maintain your bike. Consider just SOME of the MANY pros and cons of each.

Chapter Educators 2008 Gary & Alice Meyer DFW Rallycats Raconteur, June 2008

Wrenching – Ideally, you have some mechanical knowledge, reference materials, tools, and some support. Before attempting to do any service yourself, consider your knowledge level and ask for advise before attempting the job, make sure you have the proper tools and refer-ence items before getting started. Make sure there is enough room to safely keep the bike and parts apart if you cannot complete the job in one sitting. Have a plan, if something goes wrong with the service, IE; a way to get it to a repair shop or friends that can help you finish. Some of the benefits of doing your own maintenance are saving money, knowing how the work is done, finding other issues and fixing them. You also get to learn more about your bike and how it operates, as well as, pride in your accomplishment. Repair Shop – Ideally, they are staffed with knowledgeable mechanics and parts staff that can help you resolve just about any issue brought to them. These shops will have the right tools for the job and will typically have training and/or experience doing the work needed for your specific bike. Dealerships have the added benefit of support from the manufacturer. Before taking your bike to a repair shop consider the added cost of labor into any service, contact them to find out if you need an appointment. You may also need personal transporta-tion if the service will take more than one day or more time than you can spare. If you are bringing your bike in for service on an issue you are not sure of, make sure you can provide a good description of the problem, when it’s doing it, and if possible, show them the problem. What, Why, When, Where, and How are typical questions I ask myself about the problem I am experiencing before I contact my shop for service. Maintenance Log – Most of us have more than one vehicle, so it can be hard to remember what was done to which vehicle and when. A log will help determine how long it’s been since the last service. Everyone does it a little differently: paper, spreadsheet, Honda Owners Link website, etc. Everyone keeps logs differently; record the service, the cost, receipts, where service was performed, etc. The important thing is to keep one that works for you and you will use. The value of routine maintenance cannot be emphasized enough. It will go a long way to help you keep the bike at optimum riding condition for optimum riding enjoyment. “Safety Is For Life” Gary & Alice Meyer GWRRA, TX-R Chapter Educators

Chapter Couple of the Year—Don and Linda Holley

Don and Linda Holley

By the time you read this article the Texas District Rally will be over, but while writing the article, we are preparing to leave for the Rally. We are leaving and going down to spend a couple of days in San Antonio and then going down to ride around Corpus and Padre for a couple of days. Then it will be Rally time. We are really excited and looking forward to the District Rally. We hope that lots of members attend and participate. We are really looking forward to the evening on the Lexington. Just remember FUN and participation is the name of the game. If you ain’t having fun, you ain’t doin’ it right. The fun comes from your participation in the activities. You can’t have fun just sitting back watching, you need to get involved. We want to thank all the members that donated to the Chapter Basket. It will be displayed proudly at the Rally. We will represent Chapter R proudly as your Chapter Couple. Thanks for all of the support you have given us. Ride the Roads with R Don and Linda

Scavenger Hunt/Texas Trivia Ride

Gary and I had been looking forward to this ride for a quite awhile. We rearranged work schedules, and delayed projects, just so we could make this event. Saturday morning we met Terry & Leona McDade for breakfast, before heading to the ride starting point. Anxious to find out what this year’s scavenger hunt would bring, we speculated over eggs and coffee. We were not the first to arrive, nor the last, which gave us ample time to greet and visit with the others. Some faces were new to this experience, while others I recog-nized from the 3 previous events. At 9 AM Ross and Liz explained the concept, pro-vided route directions and clue cards, and divided everyone into teams. We ended up in 4 teams, most with three bikes, but one with 4. Each team needed a co-rider, to give the directions, give the clues along the route and write down the answers. As fate would have it, our team included Terry & Leona and us. Almost as soon as our team got our cards, we were off, trying to get a head start in front of the other groups. First two questions answered without stopping, this is going too well. Third clue, OK, got it, back on the bikes. Here comes another group, I sure hope we didn't’t give it away. What about the bonus questions? Oh my, I’m having a hard time keeping all of this straight. Hey how did Brian's team get in front of us? Should we give Hank his keys back? Why is Greg's team blowing past us? OK, back on the bikes. Were we supposed to turn there, U-Turn, nope, another U-Turn and we’re back on route. How did they find this route and roads, this is great. Brake hard for the next clue. Hurry up, run down the road and take a picture, before anyone else sees us. Did we miss one, oh no, we’re not going back. And so it went for 8 hours. Did we have fun? You bet. Ross and Liz did a great job putting this together, again! Did we learn interesting facts? Yes, but we won’t share, you’ll just have to come along for the next one! Did we enjoy good food? Of course, see answer to question one above! Did we enjoy good company? Before and after dinner we gathered around the pool to share the experiences of the day and other wild stories. Sure hope we do this again next year! Gary & Alice Meyer

Lotto Night An observant Jew called Jacob finds himself in dire trouble. His business has gone bust and he's in serious financial trouble. He's so desperate that he decides to ask God for help. He goes into the synagogue and begins to pray: "God, please help me, I've lost my business and if I don't get some money, I'm going to lose my house as well, please let me win the lotto." Lotto night comes and somebody else wins it. Jacob goes back to the synagogue: "God, please let me win the lotto, I've lost my business, my house and I'm going to lose my car as well." Lotto night comes a second time and Jacob still has no luck! Back to the synagogue again, Jacob asks, "My God, why have you forsaken me? I've lost my business, my house, my car and my wife and my children are starving. I don't often ask you for help and I have always been a good servant to you. Why won't you just let me win the lotto this one time so I can get my life back in order?" Suddenly there is a blinding flash of light as the heavens open and Jacob is confronted by the voice of God himself. "JACOB, MEET ME HALF WAY ON THIS ONE....BUY A LOTTO TICKET."
