Diabetes: Know-How. Unlocked.
Decisions Made Simple
INTRODUCTION
‘Decisions Made Simple’ for every individual is now a feasible aspiration. Df2020 is an innovative
early stage firm that is using a combination of mobile and cloud to pioneer a concept called User
Generated Interactive Content. Our products are designed for the codification (Df2020 Author),
interaction (Df2020 Viewer) and measurement (Df2020 Cloud) of procedural knowledge.
VISION
Diabetes knowledge is designed to make contextual decisions simpler for individuals globally and that
the emergent patterns accelerate positive change.
THE CHALLENGE
The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that by 2030, $47 trillion will be the cost to the
global economy of non-communicable diseases (NCD).
An NCD such as diabetes is a medical condition that by definition is non-infectious. It is reported that
80% of NCD risk factors can be prevented by making lifestyle changes. The shift from reactive-to-
proactive-to-preventative is dependent upon helping people make better choices. It is for this reason
diabetes is a target niche for pioneering knowledge codification, interaction and measurement.
KEY INSIGHTS
The WHO estimates that in 2014, the global prevalence of diabetes was estimated to be 9% among
adults aged 18+ years. The burden of diabetes is increasing globally, particularly in developing
countries. The causes are complex, but the increase is in large part due to the rapid increase of
people being overweight caused by obesity and physical inactivity. Even in advanced nations
diabetes is a problem. For example, in the USA, 44% of their total healthcare spend is on NCDs of
which the second largest group is diabetes estimated at an annual spend of US$245 bn.
Key points:
About 347m people worldwide have diabetes
There are two major forms of diabetes: Type 1 lack of insulin production; Type 2 body’s
ineffective use of insulin
A 3rd type is gestational diabetes involving raised blood sugar occurring during pregnancy
leading to increased risks
Type 2 diabetes can be prevented; Type 1 cannot be prevented
90% of diabetes involves Type 2 with significant increases involving children

45% increase in diabetes rates around the world from 1990 to 2013
Diabetes is predicted to be the 7th leading cause of death by 2030
1.5m individuals a year die from diabetes
80% of diabetes deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries
Only 18% of diabetic sufferers understand the risks to their eye sight
Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness, amputation and kidney failure
Diabetes is a major cause of premature illness and death in most countries
People with diabetes spend ~3 hours a year with experts in advanced countries
THE NEW APPROACH
Our goal is for Diabetes experts to develop interactive guides using Df2020 Author. The 347 million
people with diabetes or their friends and family or carers could then use Df2020 Viewer to interact
with these guides. These interactions will drive anonymous, data audits for analysis of patterns
related to choices, pathways and outcomes. This emergent evidence would improve the fight against
diabetes using shorter change cycles through better information, education, research, treatment and
influences upon lifestyle behaviour.
THE NEXT STEPS
Ideally, we are seeking early adopter individuals or organisations for the roles defined below, to
pioneer codification, interaction and measurement of diabetes knowledge to help our ‘decisions made
simple’ goal and thereby contributing in the fight against diabetes. The key roles are:
1. Expertise to develop interactive guides for diabetes
2. Individuals to interact with these guides and provide feedback
3. Researchers to analyse the anonymous interactive data usage of these guides
