Who has the worst tour bus habit?Me. I have this habit of breathing every few seconds and, apparently, its quite annoying to everyone. They’ve been very adamant about me giving it up for 25 years now.

The Music team took up the challenge to attend as many festivals as possible this summer! Here are our Festival Round Up reviews!

The answer was, quite a lot indeed. Although we caught a bit of Dan Le Sac vs Scroobious Pip, Labrinth and DJ Fresh the music seemed somehow secondary to the multitude of hands on activities and places to explore, had we arrived sooner we could have signed up for one of a number of workshops run by performers and learned how to dance, juggle or even make instruments out of vegetables. This festival is most definitely aimed squarely at families with children, indeed I would have felt most uncomfortable engaging in the level of er, refreshment that I normally attain at a festival but since I had my son with me this was not a problem. A very happy day was had watching the motorbikes roar round the wall of death and enjoying an indeterminate and wallet destroying number of rides on the helter

I have been meaning to visit Camp Bestival for years, I was only able to make it down for one day but, armed with my trusty 5 year old side-kick, we headed to Lulworth Castle to see just how much we could cram into 8 hours.

I can’t wait to go for the whole weekend next year. I’ll leave it to my son to sum up in one word... ‘AWESOME!’

Well it may be a mission to get to and from and it may have rained on us quite a bit but this year’s Bestival certainly cemented Rob & Josie Da Bank’s annual fiesta into our festival calendar. The Isle of Wight based festival reached its 10 year anniversary this year and celebrated with a huge nautical themed party. Potential Bestival-goers take note: Bestivalians take their fancy dress seriously and the Saturday

was awash with sea-creatures, mermen, lighthouses, Titanic characters, castaways, fish finger sandwiches and even Ursula the Sea Witch! Very much feeling like Glastonbury’s little brother, Bestival encompasses all that is right with the UK’s festival scene – an eclectic line up; the opportunity to party non-stop or tuck yourself into a secret spot for a workshop or acoustic jam and most importantly an over-arching sense of FUN. The artistic touches make the experience more enchanting and the sense of adventure as you discover a cinema in the trees or a bloomin’ great ship round the corner ensures there’s never a dull moment. We will certainly be setting sail on the good ship Bestival again next year! ZAN LAWTHER

Boardmasters’ setting on a cliff top overlooking the sea in Newquay already sets it apart from your average festival. Attracting bands such as Ben Howard, Everything Everything, Basement Jaxx and Grandmaster Flash this year pushed it up into the big leagues and even better - the weather held out too! Although the main stage does tend to struggle with sound the big tops create a great vibe and when you add in the surfing and BMX compe-titions you’re not short of things to be entertained by. Until 1am that is, when the festival shuts down, lights out. A night bus ferries late night party goers into town but it’s a bit of a crush and we’re left wanting a little more fun before bedtime. They’re on the right track though and Boardmasters continues to grow every year - we can’t wait to see what they have in store for us in 2014! JAMES WILLARD

DEVON MUSIC | OCTOBER 2013 FESTIVAL ROUND UP

Leopallooza is one of those festivals you wish you’d discovered years ago. Upon first

arrival it looks like dozens of clone festivals but scratch beneath the surface and it soon becomes very evident that this is a grass roots, independ-ent event born and nurtured from a passion for music. Hand painted signs, permanent wooden stages and tree house type sound booths, and sofas littered around an entire vip campus that make you feel a bit like you’re on Scout camp. And a great line up that supports up and coming artists to boot. Definitely one to be looking up for 2014.

NASS is a weekend mash up of action sports, live music and dubstep arenas. It’s the UK’s only professional action sport and music festival, and from years of pre-vious attendance, a darn good weekend.

This year the live music was dumbed down a little, understandable as it’s the late night DJ sets that are the popular music element here traditionally, but watching great bands like Kids in Glass Houses and Katy B play to an almost threadbare audience is not only a little disheartening but does beggar the question of ‘why bother?’ Great festival that possibly needs to reassess the music element for 2014.

Southampton’s Seán McGowan made his début at Glastonbury Festival in June on not one but five different stages at the Somerset bash. Starting with a packed crowd at celebrity hangout, The Rabbit Hole, and finishing with a guest slot on the Leftfield stage singing ‘Rock the Casbah’ with Billy Bragg, Kate Nash and Sam Duckworth, Seán certainly left an impression that should see him cement a place as a regular fixture at Pilton. The Rolling Stones also made their début and, although the likeliness of them returning is pretty unlikely, Mick Jagger and co put in a performance that will go down in legend. Glastonbury is a festival that truly caters for everybody; we met a lady called Jean, in her 80’s, selling merch for Strummerville, who had been coming since day one and she said she had no intention of stopping

any time soon. We asked Jean what her favourite part was. “It’s simple”, she said, “it’s the people what make Glastonbury such a special place. There’s

somebody from every walk of life here, and they’re all so friendly. I’m already looking forward to next year”.

Saturday 14th September marked another successful year for Butserfest, East Hampshire

District Council’s all ages, ‘drugs free’ music event. A collection of some of the UK’s best up and coming rock, pop and alternative rock bands wowed the 1400 attendees. Add in some free activities,

including a giant inflatable lazer quest, band signings and exclusive intimate backstage acoustic sets throughout the day, along with 10 hours of extensive live streaming provided and produced by Southampton

Solent University, and it’s safe to say that Butserfest is a unique festival experience for all ages and music tastes.MARIANNE HARRIS

With more than 80 acts playing on four stages over the Friday and Saturday, plus a single stage for early birds on the Thursday, there was plenty on offer for those who like their music a little left-field. The alternating stage times gave revellers the opportunity to watch as many bands as possible, and people literally running between stages was a common occurrence. The fans were well rewarded for their efforts. A fan-voted set from rising instrumentalists Maybeshewill and alt-metal legends earthtone9 playing the majority of the seminal album that gave its name to the festival were among the more exclusive treats on offer. My other highlights from the eclectic bill included the squalling hardcore and boundless energy of Baby Godzilla, a majestic and beautiful audio-visual extravaganza from post-rock duo Nordic Giants, expansive post-metal from Bossk, Three Trapped Tiger’s glitch, angular electro-rock and an exuberant set from And So I Watch You From Afar. The organisers of Arc Tan Gent spotted a gap in the festival market and filled it with aplomb. It was a well-run, friendly, uncorporate weekend for open-minded fans of unconventional music. I can only hope it becomes a fixture in the festival calendar for years to come. SI CLARK

Over the last weekend in August, around 3,000 fans of experimental music gathered on a small farm just outside Bristol for the inauguralArc Tan Gent festival.

Beautiful Days does exactly what it says on the tin. I frequent around 5 or 6 festivals every Summer & BD would be my favourite even if I didn’t care for any acts on the lineup! The combination of the atmosphere, lovely location, friendliness & of course the brilliant ale & food options really do it for me. From an artist’s perspective, I’ve always been treated superbly & professionally too. Created by The Levellers (splendid gentle-men) for all the right reasons, easily the most fun you can have in a field! I’d go even if I wasn’t playing & that’s a rarity for me these days!

Encompassing all the craziest bits of Glastonbury yet keeping the capacity to a modest 30,000; BoomTown is nestled in the rolling countryside just outside Winchester. It’s certainly not one for the fainthearted – if you want to party, non-stop, for four days straight then THIS IS THE FESTIVAL FOR YOU. If you want your senses battered from all directions by weird, wonderful, at times beautiful and at other times brilliantly terrifying sights and sounds then go, pull on your fanciful costume, douse yourself in glitter and set yourself free amongst the madness. The sheer amount of effort from all involved is what comes together to make BoomTown the full on sensory explo-sion it is. There’s a theme for everyone as the entire siteis a tangling maze of districts such as ChinaTown, Barrioloco and Mayfair. During the day BoomTown is full of chilled out vibes and relaxed grooves but it’s at night that the party really kicks into high gear. The explosion (and yes, we literally mean EXPLOSION) of Arcadia allows you to party till the small hours to the hard trance and huge beats blasting out of Arcadia, under the watchful eyes of an enormous fire breathing mechanical spider. Melodic but with plenty of punch, Idiom are at the forefront of the rock-rap revival and loving it. Add in dirty riffs with an overtone of sleaze combined with adrenaline-fuelled vocals and we’re convinced that The Smoking Hearts also mean business. Expect a raucous live show from both these bands, well known for getting stuck in and involved with the crowd. See you in the pit!

Beans on Toast is one man with a guitar, writing songs that he claims ‘have the same chords’ and ‘sound like Billy Bragg’. Known to his friends as Jay, Mr Toast blends a dark wit with serious social and political satire based on a diverse range of subjects including cocaine, Tesco, London, gun crime, myspace, global warming and the Lake District.

British neo-psychedelic band Temples make trippy dance-and rock-oriented pop that combines the experimental sound of bands like The Flaming Lips with the classic song craftsman-ship of The Beatles. Formed in Kettering, Temples centres around the talents of songwriting duo vocalist/guitarist James Bagshaw and vocalist/bassist Thomas Warmsley.

Surrey lads Canterbury are on the road again! Straight down the line indie rock, you can expect a smoother sound these days as the band evolve, however their toe-tap inducing rhythms and catchy choruses are just as strong. Add to that strident melodies, swirling keys and funky riffs now being pushed forward by main support The JCQ and you’ve got yourself a bloomin’ fine evening!

Seasoned veterans of the pop punk scene and about to hit their 20 year anniversary, the Bowling for Soup boys are bidding farewell to touring with a series of ‘greatest hits’ extended live shows. Fun, smiles, cheers and tears are guaranteed as these guys leave the UK on a massive high. Let a little sunshine into your life….

With bass as heavy as you can handle and two rap vocalists these boys are LOUD but having caught them several times on the festival circuit this summer we defy you not to get down to this new brand of metal.

This enigmatic hip-hop duo, combine electronic beats with sung, spoken and rapped lyrics. Featuring some of the best facial hair in the business the name “Scroobius Pip” is an intentional misspelling of the Edward Lear poem, “The Scroobious Pip”. Expect a whole heap of comedy, charisma and above all else BEATS.

Singer songwriter Gabrielle Aplin shot to fame for her cover of ‘The Power of Love’ used in John Lewis’ Christmas advertising last year. Having tirelessly self-promoted via her popular YouTube cover videos she embarks on a massive headline tour next month. Expect lilting vocals and beautifully pared down versions of classic hits.

At first glance, Akala is straight outta hip hop central casting but scratch the surface and you’ll discover a glorious mixture of electro-funk keyboards vs metal riffs vs classical piano that attempts to break down the culture of cliché and stereotype that smothers the genre. Akala strives to communicate effectively with young people and encourages people to dig a little deeper through Edutainment.

Who are you and what do you do in the band?I am D and i play bass

Can you give a brief history of the band? Codex originally formed in 2009 as a four piece and released our debut EP ‘The Infinite Growth Paradigm Vs Finite Resources’ via Bored Stiff Records in 2010. In 2011 we had our song ‘Baptised’ released on the game Rockband 3 and completed our lineup with Elliott & Frank (Cambion) along with sharing the stage with international Metal acts such as Vader & Krisiun. We are currently working on our new release featuring new singer Ray Arrell.

Your headlining the Second Stage at the Halloween Zombie Ball are you doing anything special for this? We are indeed, but we can’t say too much now, its a surprise. But we do have a whole bunch of new songs, which may well be unleashed for the Zombie Hordes...I think the worlds first Zombie Circle pit is in order!

What’s the best thing about touring? Touring’s a blast! We have had some great experi-ences touring in Codex, for me its getting to play in a new city/town each night to new people and hang-ing out with other bands along with ever present randomness that never fails to happen.

Do you travel in a van? Does it have a name? The Thunder Horse!

If you could have written any song, what would it be? Machine Head - Davidian. Its just pure class! Or any-thing by Pantera, RIP Dimebag.

If you became the biggest band in the world, who would you get to support you? Iron Madien! Or Dethklok, actually Dethklok!

Besides the Zombie Ball what can we expect from your live show? Pure 100% heavy metal! Full power, balls to the wall metal!

Metallers Codex Alimentarius are bringing a new age of a more bone crushing style of metal driven by a power/groove/classical Infusion to the underground.

The brand new track ‘Arise’ from the forth coming release ‘ The New Classical Era’ is available now for free download.

Rising from the Southwest, Codex Alimentarius formed in 2009 and within a short time had gained a loyal fan base. Codex have taken a hold of the local music scene and earned high regard from venues, labels and the media; nationally and internationally since hitting the live circuit in September 2010.

Codex originally formed as a four piece with former vocalist Stephen Bending, Stan Kemble and Tim Wright on guitars and Andrew Dicker on bass – Bringing Elliott Alderman-Broom in as a third guitarist and Frank Dennis on drums in April 2011, finishing the line-up. Together they set about crafting an Individual style fusing melodic and brutal metal and after headline sets and sell out shows at venues in their local area alongside the release of their debut EP ‘The Infinite Growth Paradigm Vs Finite Resources’ via Bored Stiff Records; The bands epic masterpiece ‘Baptised’ from their debut release was made available for the internationally acclaimed Xbox and PS3 game ‘Rock Band 3’ in February 2012 - as well as touring with death metal legends Vader and Krisiun in June 2011, co-headling the ‘Crushing The South Tour’ with Furyborn in September 2011, along with supporting: Sonic Syndicate (2010), Malefice (2011), Saturnian (2011), The Defiled (2011), Evile (2012), Romeo Must Die (2012), Revolker (2012) and Ted Maul (2012). All topped off by being featured on Metal Hammers ‘New Guard of Metal’ cover mount CD and being nominated for the ‘Best Rock/Metal Act’ at the 2012 Southwest Music Awards.

Currently working on their new release featuring Codex’s new singer Ray Arrell, and the brand new track ‘Arise’ (available now for free download!) Codex are bringing a new age of more bone crushing, brutal style of metal driven by a power/groove/classical Infusion to the underground with great ovation, leaving the crowd hungry for more! As shown on the ‘From Hell To Oblivion UK Tour 2013’ with American death metallers ‘Enemy Reign’ - Codex promises a powerful and energetic stage performance with a no-holds-barred attitude, backed up by a hunger to strive forwards with their eyes always set on dominating the UK and International Metal scene.
