About us...Graduate Development ProgrammeHSBC Bermuda’s Graduate Development Programme (GDP) is two years in length, and aims to provide accelerated training and practical experience to graduates who are interested in developing leadership skills, sales capabilities, and product knowledge for a career in the financial services industry. These skills are developed by creating a customised rotation schedule which will see the graduate occupy several roles within a specific business area.

The GDP offers international exposure through an intensive leadership development course held at HSBC’s Group Management Training College in the UK. Graduates receive the support and guidance of a mentor who will assist them in preparing customised development plans. These plans build on the capabilities required for the successful completion of the GDP. HSBC also supports the Graduates in obtaining a professional designation.

Group Graduate Development Programme The GGDP is a high profile and intensive learning programme

geared towards leadership development held overseas. The

programme is designed for talented junior executives and lays

the foundation for an executive career within the HSBC Group

through a process of training and development supported by

high quality feedback.

The GGDP is unique for the accessibility it provides to the Group’s senior management and the diversity of the participants attending. The GGDP plays a key role in helping talented young executives to establish a network of contacts across geographies, customer groups and hierarchies.

Business AreasGraduates may complete rotations within a core line of business, four of which are explored on these pages.

Commercial/Corporate/Global BankingHSBC commercial and small business banking provides businesses with financial solutions and resources to maintain a successful and efficient business. Global Banking provides banking services to larger institutions including Insurers and Reinsurers. Relationship Managers are at the center of these business areas. They work with the client and other product areas to provide solutions that meet client needs. Typical needs of business clients include financing and cash management.

Graduates have worked alongside relationship managers, allowing them to develop an understanding of client needs and the Bank’s extensive range of products and services. Graduates in this area can expect to gain experience in financial analysis and sales. Additionally, working with relationship managers provides an opportunity to attend client visits and entertainment events.

Private BankingHSBC Private Bank provides wealth management services to high net worth individuals and their families. These wealth management services include asset administration, trust services and investment services.

In this area, graduates have the opportunity to meet with clients, prepare presentations for colleagues, and work on projects that will directly affect the Bank’s bottom line.

Specialist areas within the Private Bank include portfolio management, trust, credit, and compliance. Graduates interested in these specialist areas are encouraged to complete the relevant designations (such as STEP and CFA) as part of the Bank’s initiative to support accreditation.

As a lender to development companies, the Bank’s relationship managers and Graduates visit construction projects to ensure they are progressing according to plan.

HSBC Securities Services (HSS)HSS provides comprehensive global, regional and domestic fund services including fund administration, global custody, corporate trust and loan agency and sub-custody settlement and services to the international asset management industry.

In this area, graduates will have the opportunity to work with the custody team, interact with clients, and spend time learning various functions of the business, positioning the graduate to take leadership of an administrative team upon completion of the programme.

Payments & Cash Management (PCM)PCM provides structured value added transactional banking solutions and support to corporate and commercial clients. The business consists of four teams: Client Services, Product, Sales, and Implementation. The products and services provided by PCM include payables and receivables management, Internet banking, and Liability and Liquidity management. In this department, graduates will understand how to propose cash management vehicles to meet client needs, perform maintenance functions on client accounts, and manage high volumes of time sensitive transactions.

Retail Banking Wealth Management (RBWM)RBWM is the hub for all financial services and support operations offered to the mass market retail sector. This division is largely responsible for establishing and delivering a suite of products and services inclusive of credit facilities, investment vehicles, merchant services and a global Premier Banking product.

Graduates in RBWM will rotate through all areas of retail banking, with a strong emphasis on client-facing roles. Trainees will be stationed at one of the local branches to work with personal bankers and branch managers, allowing them to become familiar with the general operations of running a branch.

Graduates are extensively exposed to a myriad of customer interactions and come away with a full knowledge of the RBWM product line and service standards.

Global Transaction BankingGraduates placed in RBWM regularly meet with clients and build quality customer relationships.

“As a graduate trainee I really enjoyed the level of exposure I was granted with many of our financial deals.”

Our experience...Here’s what some former Graduates had to say about the Graduate Development Programme.

Steven McGuinness Relationship Manager, Business Banking

As a graduate trainee I really enjoyed the level of exposure I was granted with many of our financial deals. I had an opportunity to use various skills I learned in university and apply them in the “real world”. I am now a Relationship Manager with Business Banking. My primary role is to manage a portfolio of clients by providing them with credit solutions and cash management tools. GDP gave me the opportunity to meet with various customers, network with senior managers, and continue my professional development with the Bank’s support. This experience has allowed me to succeed in my role as an RM.

Sandra Lines Project Manager (London, UK), Global Product Change Management

Having been a part of the relationship management team in Global Banking, I worked with colleagues in many different jurisdictions, such as New York and London, and product areas like credit, debt capital markets and asset management. In my opinion, the main benefits of the GDP are the networking opportunities and the senior management exposure, both in Bermuda and as part of the leadership course at the HSBC Group Training College in the UK.

Jody Feldman Assistant Vice President (VP)(NY, USA), Global Banking

The biggest benefit of the GDP program in my opinion, is the networking opportunity and exposure to different business lines and geographies. I have worked in Bermuda, London, Jersey and now currently on secondment in New York. The experience and contacts I have developed over the years is invaluable and has allowed me to better navigate through the Group to solve complex issues and provide unique solutions for my clients.

Sherie Joell Project Manager, Business Transformation

I have rotated through five departments within RBWM. My transition through all of them was rocky at first, as always when starting a new position, but before I left, I felt like a part of each team, and actually still do. I am currently a Project Manager in Business Transformation. The most valuable aspects of the GDP for me personally, have been the networks I have built within my business division and throughout the bank, as well as the business knowledge I gained as a result of my rotation.
