What did you like about your image? When I took the picture I wanted to try and show that some of my settings would be based around forests and that’s why I took a picture of a bush to try and bring that across. The reason I focused on the tree so much was because I wanted to show how the mice could be in a tree for one of the settings.

What would you improve if you did it again? The thing about the images are, even though I took them I don’t really like them that much, sure they show the ideas behind what I was to do with my story, but at the same time they don’t really help out with anything. I’d like to say that the shot of the bush do help show that I want to set some of my illustrations in something similar to this, but unless I describe it you wouldn’t even notice it.

What did you like about your image? They were completely my own creations, the one’s in colour anyway, just something a threw together in the class room so they aren’t going to be very detailed. I decided I would make my classic sky whale which I enjoy making so I decided to go for that in my designs. My characters that were based on Adventure Time I think came out looking slightly better than I thought, the thing I like about this is the fact that I didn’t think I could draw anything but a stick figure before, then soon realised that I’m actually ok at drawing stuff.

What would you improve if you did it again? The colours that I used could have had a bit more variety which could have made them seem more unique rather than all the same colour.

Initial Ideas

These are a few examples of the text that I have decided upon for my story book. I also decided on using the three blind mice as an example as this is what I am basing my story upon. I have decided to use Serif Sans, I know it has been proven that Serif is easier for kids to read, but I also feel that kids will be drawn more towards this text because it is was is associated with fairy tailes. Something that might help along the way is the use of the tracking tool within photoshop, this will help bring the letters closer together, thus making it easier for the kids to read. I also like these texts because they have lower case and upper case letters, this will help when it comes to reading it. What I mean is, not all the letters are upper case, this will make it harder for children to understand when they are trying to read it. At the moment I am being dragged towards the Romance Fatal Serif font, this is because it is the text that I feel looks most likely to be in a fairy tale story and will bring real character to the book.

Idea Generation

In this slide you can see the original idea for what I want to include within my childrens story book with the focus being on the three blind mouse nursery rhyme. As you can see I have included a few characters, they are the same character and idea all drawn differently. I wanted to add different images onto my mood board so you can see the different ways they could be put together in my final piece. I produce these characters simply when it comes to my final product, using a viriaty of rotoscoping and the shape method which will make them seem more child friendly. The characters that I will probably use are probably a cross between the bottom right and the middle top line. These are the ones that I feel will appeal to the kids the most.

In my head I have an evil farmers wife image in my head when it comes to the story of the three blind mice. In the original story of the three blind mice, they become blind after having their eyes poked out by a bramble bush. I won’t be including this in my story, but I still feel it is child friendly even though they get their tails chopped off. Kids through the years have been raised on the nursery rhyme of the three blind mice, and you don’t see mice without tails, so I guess it won’t hurt to include it in my nursery rhyme. I like the fact it is set in the countryside because when you think of the countryside you think of wide open fields and hills that stretch on for miles. You get the sence of freedome and I think kids will enjoy that, also mice are primarily found in the countryside amongst hay bails.

Audience

My target age will be kids between the ages of 6-9. These are the ages that kids are starting to learn how to read longer books and enjoy the illustrations that are in the books. There will be no specific gender this book is aimed at, this is because I feel nursery rhymes should be for everyone, they are kids so they won’t understand that a book may or may not be for their gender. Social class is a big factor within this, you don’t want to make a book for someone who won’t be able to afford it, that’s why I’m aiming it at people who fall into the ABC1 category, because they will be able to afford things that aren’t necessity. Hopefully the kids that read this will understand the slight bit of comedy behind the whole book, I didn’t want it to be too serious, I feel there are too many serious kids books out there trying to teach kids lessons, how about some light hearted humour for once.

Production Methods

I will be using rotoscope as my main method of creating my illustrations. I decided to go for this method because I can’t draw all that well and don’t think they would could out look fantastic. I will also be using the filter gallery to make the backgrounds blend into the cartoon like world I will be creating. The use of the shape tools on Photoshop will help me create some of my characters, I’ve had experience with these types of creations in the past and found it fairly easy to use and create nice pieces of work with it.
