Drafting and review process
• Initial drafting considered:– Outcomes/important factors highlighted by the EPPO
Workshop on eradication, containment and contingency planning (Nova Gorica, Slovenia)
– EPPO PM9/10 Generic elements for contingency plans
– ISPM No. 9 Guidelines for pest eradication programmes
– The review of eradication and containment campaigns (5.1): Therese Pluess et al.
– UK Non-Native Risk Analysis Scheme (UKNNRA) developed by a consortium of GB institutes

Development of the DSS• Over the consultation process – evolved into a checklist
type scheme. • However, other school of thought was that
quantitative/semi quantitative approach was useful and was necessary to fit the remit of WP5.3
• A 1-day small Panel meeting was held with pest risk managers at EPPO HQ in February to resolve fundamental aspects of the DSS approach.
• The draft was developed further at the Windsor Pratique meeting in March, following which it was sent for a consultation and testing phase.
• The new draft is intended to be a generic, semi quantitative guide to appraise the feasibility of control measures

DSS approach: 3 components:
• 1. Appraisal of key feasibility factors to aid decision making for candidate measures
• Includes Persistence; re-invasion; pathways, spread and biological characteristics; time; delimitation; practicalities / operational factors; enforcement and compliance

2. A comparison matrix
• This is to develop aspects of feasibility, efficacy, costs and safety.

3. Guidance for decision making steps
• Uses simple guidance tables to aid with the appraisal process in both the feasibility section and comparison matrix.

Work plan to complete the DSS
• The Pratique breakout discussions in September will finalize the DSS draft. Pest risk managers will run further pest examples through the scheme
• Final refinement and drafting to form a user friendly layout and functionality
• Final testing will be carried out at the EPPO Workshop on Eradication (26-28th Oct) in Trévise (IT) for final validation
