Lesson 4: Are rich countries the best?

Students should structure their answer as below to give a balanced argument. They need to include evidence to back up their points. They can use information from the last two lessons or information they have found elsewhere. They should make reference to development indicators and should aim to write one side of A4.1.Agree: yes, rich countries are the best and a range of reasons why.2.Disagree: no, rich countries are not the best and a range of reasons why.3.Your opinion: give your own opinion and justify if (i.e. back it up) with a range of reasons.

Lesson 9: Research

Pick one African country to research for the Africa project. Students must bring this research for every lesson. In order to write the project students will need to have a range of information for their chosen country:•Map•Background information (e.g. physical geography – rivers, mountains, climate and human geography – population, history, languages, cities)•Development indicators (e.g. birth rate, death rate, literacy rate, life expectancy)•Factors/events that may have affected its development

Lesson 10-12: Africa ProjectStudents need to work on and finish their Africa project. It should include:•Introduction

– Background to country– Map/location– Aim (to compare the level of development between the UK and your

chosen country)•Development comparison

– Describe the development indicators for your chosen country and the UK

– Describe the differences between the indicators/countries and explain why they exist and what they might mean for the quality of life in those countries (think back to the spider diagram we did about reasons why countries are poor)

– You could include a day in the life of you and compare it with a day in the life of a teenager in your chosen country.

•Conclusion– What did you find out? (what are the differences/similarities)– Which the better country in your opinion and why (explain!)
