Developing Servant Leaders Full of the Holy Spirit & Wisdom.

Acts 6:2-7 ...seek out from among you seven men (and women) of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business;… Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith. WELCOME to Christian Life Center’s Leadership Development! As you have completed Discipleship Development, it’s time to turn your focus towards the high calling of a Servant Leader in the church. God’s leaders serve Him in humility and assist God’s people in the process of transformation as they become who God has designed them to become. Notice the following quote from the “Spiritual Leadership” by J. Oswald Sanders:

If the world is to hear the church’s voice today, leaders are needed who are authoritative, spiritual, and sacrificial. Authoritative, because people desire reliable leaders who know where they are going and are confident of getting there. Spiritual, because without a strong relationship to God, even the most attractive and competent person cannot lead people to God. Sacrificial, because this trait follows the model of Jesus, who gave Himself for the whole world and who calls us to follow in His steps. (Emphasis mine)

Jesus stated clearly that there is a difference between secular and Christian leadership (Matthew 20:20-28). Secular leadership tends to rely on human ability, charisma, techniques and objectives which may not necessarily be in line with Scripture. The Church today needs strong Spiritual leaders, convinced of their own calling who lead in humility and wisdom. There are similarities between this course and Discipleship Development such as the weekly time sheet and journal, daily devotions, reading, fasting, Scripture memorization and accountability. In addition, we will read 3 chapters from “Spiritual Leadership” each week. See page 4 about the requirements of receiving a certificate. You may audit the class now and attend at a later date for a certificate. We pray that the next few weeks will truly produce and strengthen eternal values and give you a greater understanding of shepherding God’s people as a servant leader.

THE MISSION

The mission of Christian Life Center’s Discipleship Institute is to train God’s people for the work of ministry in fulfilling Christ’s Great Commandment (Matthew 22:35-40) and the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20). This is a three-part activity where faith becomes action:

1. Academics - Through our academic approach to Discipleship and Leadership we come to see God’s heart and His purpose for fruitful ministry and relationship. This is accomplished through a time of daily prayer, Bible reading, journaling, Scripture memorization, Bible teaching and accountability. 2 Timothy 2:15; 2 Timothy 3:16-17

2. Service - A submitted servant’s heart is the basis for leadership in the Church. No one can lead effectively in the Church without the experience of following a leader and faithfully serving in someone else’s “vineyard.” This is accomplished by participating in the vision of the church and accomplishing the goals given to the leadership by the Holy Spirit. John 13:3-17; Ephesians 4:16

3. Missions - The mandate for disciples is to allow the Holy Spirit to impart to us God’s passion for the lost and to be involved in the Lord’s Harvest locally and to the ends of the earth. Matthew 9:37-38; Acts 1:8

COURSE TOPICS 1. KNOWING GOD - GOD’S LEADERS HAVE A DEEPLY PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM.

Philippians 3:1-16 ...But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead… (Exodus 33:7-23)

2. SERVANTHOOD - THE FOUNDATION OF BIBLICAL LEADERSHIP AND AUTHORITY.

Matthew 20:20-28 ...But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave — just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

3. INTEGRITY - THE HEART OF THE LEADER.

Matthew 22:34-40 But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” (Also Job 2:3; 1 Chronicles 29:16-18)

Page 4: Developing Servant Leaders Full of the Holy Spirit and · PDF fileDeveloping Servant Leaders Full of the Holy Spirit & Wisdom

Christian Life Center Leadership Development 4

4. AUTHORITY - BEING GOOD AT BEING NUMBER TWO. 1 Samuel 14:1-23 ...Then Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come, let us

go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised; it may be that the LORD will work for us. For nothing restrains the LORD from saving by many or by few.” So his armorbearer said to him, “Do all that is in your heart. Go then; here I am with you, according to your heart.”... (Also Matthew 8:5-13)

5. MENTORING - LEADERS REPRODUCE LEADERS.

2 Timothy 2:2 And the things that you have heard from me (the Apostle Paul) among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. (Also Matthew 28:18-20)

6. LEADERSHIP STYLES - DIFFERENT WAYS WE LEAD GOD’S PEOPLE.

God created us to be a diverse Body with many leadership styles. Examples are: Paul was a dominant, action oriented leader; Peter was a relational leader, characterized by a desire for involvement with people; Abraham’s style reflected a harmony and security in relationships; Moses was a leader committed to accuracy and quality.

7. TEAMS - DYNAMIC TEAMS CREATE DYNAMIC CHURCHES.

Nehemiah 2:18 And I told them of the hand of my God which had been good upon me, and also of the king’s words that he had spoken to me. So they said, “Let us rise up and build.” Then they set their hands to this good work. (Also Ephesians 4:16 & Philippians 2:1-4)

FORMAT

2. Daily Devotions | Dedicate at least one hour each day to the Lord for devotions & class work.

Proverbs 8:34 Blessed is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at my doors.

3. Homework | Homework includes reading and journaling the assigned Scriptures, reading the

lesson notes and assigned chapters from “Spiritual Leadership” before class time, memorizing the Scriptures and the using Weekly Time Sheet. 2 Timothy 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need

to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 4. Scripture Memorization | An important discipline for the believer.

Psalm 119:11 Your Word I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin against you.

Page 5: Developing Servant Leaders Full of the Holy Spirit and · PDF fileDeveloping Servant Leaders Full of the Holy Spirit & Wisdom

Christian Life Center Leadership Development 5

5. Fasting | It is crucial to develop a regular time of weekly fasting (food, cell phone, TV, etc.) Hebrews 12:1 Therefore… let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares

us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us … 6. Accountability | Everyone in the class will be expected to take part in a small accountability

group for the duration of the class. The objective is to give needed incentive and support during the weeks ahead. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their

labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he has no one to help him up.

7. Church Attendance | Students are expected to attend the weekly Sunday morning and

Wednesday evening services. The weekly quiz will include questions on the sermon. Hebrews 10:24-25 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and

good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

8. Service | Jesus stressed service, and students of our Institute are expected to serve in some

area of ministry weekly. John 13:14-17 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should

wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you… Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

9. Example | A leader is an example in lifestyle and in submission to other leaders.

1 Timothy 4:12 …be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in spirit, in faith, in purity…

Hebrews 13:17 Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.

10. Evangelism | Because local and missions are a big part of our church “DNA,” students are

expected to be involved in our missions program through prayer, giving and going. John 4:35 Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I

say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!

MEMORY VERSES

All Scriptures are taken from the New King James Version of the Bible.

EXODUS 33:12-13 - A leader’s relationship with God. Then Moses said to the LORD, “See, You say to me, ‘Bring up this people.’ But You have not let me know whom You will send with me. Yet You have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found grace in My sight.’ Now therefore, I pray, if I have found grace in Your sight, show me now Your way, that I may know You and that I may find grace in Your sight. And consider that this nation is Your people.” NKJV (Exodus 33:12-13)

EXODUS 33:14-17 - A leader follows God. And He said, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” Then he said to Him, “If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here. For how then will it be known that Your people and I have found grace in Your sight, except You go with us? So we shall be separate, Your people and I, from all the people who are upon the face of the earth.” So the LORD said to Moses, “I will also do this thing that you have spoken; for you have found grace in My sight, and I know you by name.” NKJV (Exodus 33:14-17)

MATTHEW 20:25-28 - The leader as a servant. But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave — just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” NKJV (Matthew 20:25-28)

EPHESIANS 4:11-13 - A leader equips others. And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;… NKJV (Ephesians 4:11-13)

Page 10: Developing Servant Leaders Full of the Holy Spirit and · PDF fileDeveloping Servant Leaders Full of the Holy Spirit & Wisdom

Christian Life Center Leadership Development 10

EPHESIANS 4:14-16 - A leader strengthens and grows the Church. … that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head — Christ — from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love. NKJV (Ephesians 4:14-16)

ACTS 6:3-5, 7 - A leader is Spirit-filled. Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business; but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word. And the saying pleased the whole multitude… Then the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith. NKJV (Acts 6:3-5, 7)

2 TIMOTHY 2:2 - A leader reproduces leaders. And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. NKJV (2 Timothy 2:2)

1 PETER 5:2-4 - A leader shepherds God’s people. Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away. NKJV (1 Peter 5:2-4)

John 13:12-17 So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments,

and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and

Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. Most assuredly, I say to

you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.”
