Jazz Kuipers is a Dutch fashion designer specialized in menswear. She graduated in fashion and design from the Amsterdam Fashion Institute (AMFI). As an intern, she began working for Boris Bidjan Saberi, a luxury menswear label based in Spain. She was then selected for the G-Star talent award to showcase a collection at Amsterdam fashion week.

In 2013, Jazz Kuipers won the Lectra award for 3D prototyping with her collection Until the Quiet Comes. This annual competition organized by AMFI and Lectra gives final-year students the opportunity to create a mini-collection powered by Lectra solutions. Their work is then submitted to a jury of fashion education and industrial professionals.

hile many AMFI students choose to specialize in womenswear, Jazz Kuipers decided to take a different

path. “When I was working on womenswear it would always turn out to be unisex.” To develop her menswear collection, Until the Quiet Comes, Jazz Kuipers used Lectra’s pattern-making, grading and 3D prototyping solutions.

When talking about menswear, Jazz Kuipers’ opinion is clear-cut. “For me, the absolute challenge is to involve men in fashion. I find the menswear market quite restrictive compared to womenswear. It is usually either boring or really feminine. I want to dress men to make them feel powerful when they wear one of my coats,” she says. The young Dutch designer was inspired at an early age by masculine symbols like Batman, bodybuilders and even gang culture.

She was trained on Lectra 3D technology during her studies at AMFI. “I chose Lectra 3D pattern-making course because I knew it was going to be important in the future. Not only the general future, but also my own future.”

Lectra 3D offered Jazz Kuipers a new way of working, one that is faster and delivers a more consistent fit. Today, the young designer could not go a day without using it. “I love to work with Lectra, because it helps me be more accurate and allows me to check proportions immediately - critical points in menswear,” she explains.

By viewing designs in 3D, she can more easily adjust pattern construction while seeing styles come to life. “Checking fit directly onscreen enables one to see mistakes and also reduces material waste. It is very helpful as I use materials like organic cotton, denim or leather for my garments. It is just amazing,” she adds.

Jazz Kuipers is convinced that having this skill will help her career. She believes Lectra 3D is the future of product development. “Virtual prototyping really ensures the quality and fit of styles,” she explains. “When you enter the production phase, having virtual patterns for the ateliers that produce your garments allows you to share accurate information.”

After working for different Dutch companies as a designer, Jazz Kuipers now plans to launch her own company. Her new menswear collection will be available online next year (see box).

o develop her collection, Jazz Kuipers used Lectra 3D technology to combine hip hop style

pieces with ethnical Nigerian influences. “American and African gang members formed the base inspiration of this collection,” she says. She developed over-sized pieces to create powerful and impressive silhouettes.
