What is desuperheating?
• When steam is heated past saturation, it is “superheated”
• Condensers and boilers cannot take Superheated Bypass Steam (SBS)
• Water is used to cool SBS before entering the boiler or condenser
• If not done correctly, extremely high cost of failure
Why is desuperheating critical?
• Water slug damage
• Pipes knocked off supports
• Ruptured dump devices, severe valve damage
• Thermal fatigue / cracking of pipes
• Cracked valve bodies, desuperheaters and valve trim
