Why Edinburgh?
• Capital city, UNESCO World Heritage
• Year-round Festivals: 3,000+ events, 4.2 million attendances
• Most greenspace of any large UK city
• University city
3
Challenges: Sustainable Growth• Resilience to climate change, flooding• Halting loss of biodiversity and threats to
ecosystem services• Knowledge-based economy at regional scale• Socially inclusive growth, promoting data
literacy• Protecting right to privacy

Our IoT TestbedCurrent LoRaWAN gateway locations:1. Easter Bush (Roslin) [South]2. Argyle House (West Port) 3. New College (The Mound) 4. Library Annex (South Gyle) [West]5. Charterisland (Canongate) 6. Royal Observatory7. Western General Hospital [North]8. BioQuarter no.9 (Little France) [East]9. 50 George Square
Gateways are Kerlink V2 with high resolution clocks for geolocation with LoRa (no GPS reqd.)

City Region Deal Aspiration• 10,000+ multi-sensor devices (circa 100,000
sensors) to capture a broad range of environmental data at scale
• Create unique region-wide datasets that can be used to spawn new analytics-based research, build practical applications and develop new IoT learning, including:– machine learning applied to diverse data for
embedded intelligence, successful operation of IoT at large scale, fine resolution weather prediction, biodiversity monitoring and pollution assessment for the region;
– supporting secondary school education through enhancing STEM and providing an early introduction to data science.
Argyle House Office Environment andMeeting Room Occupancy Monitoring
• Estimote beacons (Bluetooth)• Smart cushion with Force Sensitive
Resistor• presence, movement, temperature, light
level sensors deployed to desk pods• Pycom LoPys = Local Sensor Hubs
• collect data from beacons• transfer to backend server over LoRaWAN
• Currently deployed:• E4 meeting room • K-East & K-West • F-East & F-West • 9 Sensor Hubs, 58 beacons
• 114 recorded sensor readings every 2 minutes
