Meaning of Third World
Practical definition – poor developing countries
Has lost some meaning
1st World – Rich, non-communist market economies
2nd World – Communist countries (they have practically disappeared)
3rd World – non-communist poor countries with “immature” economies
A More Realistic Approach
Developed Countries (formerly 1st World)
Developing Countries (all the other countries)
What about the former 2nd World?
They are divided between the two groups – i.e. the Czech Rep. is in the developed group, whereas Vietnam is in the developing group.

Relationship between Economic and Political Freedom
Free market economies produce rising standards of living and an expanding middle class, which produces growing demands for political freedoms and individual rights.
Recent examples include Taiwan and South Korea.
Economic Interdependence
Role of rapid transportation, communication, and computer networks
Rise and influence of multinational corporations
Changing role of international boundaries
Regional integration (European Union)
Economic Interdependence
Trade agreements such as NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) and WTO (World Trade Organization)
International Organizations such as UN (United Nations) and IMF (International Monetary Fund)
What are some other issues we are facing today around the
world?
The Environment
Urbanization, farming and logging have devoured nearly 70% of Africa’s animal habitats-leading to many endangered and extinct species
Desertification in sub-Saharan Africa hit with droughts and famine in 1900s + overgrazing of livestock and removal of topsoil=desertification
Strip mining, pesticides for agriculture, chemical by-products being dumped into waterways, gases from power plants and car emissions creating concerns for the ozone layer
Global Warming
Humanitarian Crises
Syria’s civil war is the worst humanitarian crisis of our time. Half the country’s pre-war population — more than 11 million people — have been killed or forced to flee their homes
