July Breakfast Meeting: Presenting Yourself with Confidence and Authenticity Pete Machalek and Dean Hyers of SAGE Presenting will speak about representing yourself, your ideas, projects and initiatives with increased power and influence. They will discuss the barriers and internal interference that can get in the way of effective self-representation, and will provide an invaluable process that you can immediately implement to erase that interference and skyrocket your personal presence and your ability to inspire decisive action in others.

As filmmakers, Machalek and Hyers have developed their expertise in crafting clear messages and working with actors to deliver those messages with powerful and authentic personal presence. July Dinner Meeting: Project Management for Team Members Do you ever feel as a project manager that the responsibility for project management rests totally on your shoulders? Do you ever feel that all the project management work is your responsibility? If so, this presentation will provide insight into how to relieve that burden and improve your project management productivity.

This presentation will discuss the important and often under-represented role team members play in project management. It will outline how team members can greatly influence the role of project management and be a key component to successful project management. It will discuss the responsibility the project manager has to influence and motivate team members on their project management responsibility and provide tools to help create team members that will make projects go better.

Stephen P. Hawrysh, CCP, PMP, has over 25 years of experience in information technology developing internal information systems for major corporations. He has been involved in all aspects of the systems development lifecycle from strategic planning to business solution definition, analysis, design, construction, implementation, support and maintenance. He has been around long enough to see an IBM mainframe transform from the main business computer into a third tier data server; from service bureaus to application service providers to web services; from dumb terminals, to X-terminals, to “thin” clients, to web browsers (the more things change, the more they stay the same).

For the past 12 years, Mr. Hawrysh has been teaching, mentoring, and practicing project management and has developed a project management methodology. Mr. Hawrysh attempts to understand state of the art theories and turn them into the state of the practice. Currently, Mr. Hawrysh is a Sr. Project Manager for The Antioch Company/Creative Memories in St. Cloud where he is helping implement a culture of project management.

August Dinner Meeting: Project Management and Executive Leadership There are people who believe that project management is an IT function and project management is an isolated career path. The truth is that the core component of project management is leadership. Leadership is defined as providing vision, communicating, motivating, and coaching. Every skill possessed by an effective project manager has direct application to positions of senior leadership in organizations today.

We discuss the core competencies of executive leadership and how great leadership overshadows effective management. The presentation will also share how project managers can open doors far beyond project management.

Todd A. Osborn, MSM, PMP, the President of “Strategic-Alliance,” provides coaching and personal consulting services for professionals nationally and internationally. He is a speaker, consultant, and executive coach who specializes in emergency preparedness and leadership development.

Mr. Osborn has more than 15 years of hands-on leadership experience in both the U.S. Military and Global Corporations. A former Army Officer and Paratrooper, he is a trusted advisor sought for his leadership, insight and values-based approach to leadership and personal development.

He is currently the “Emergency Preparedness Manager” and an executive coach at John Deere’s Worldwide Headquarters in Moline, IL., where he is leading the company’s global emergency management planning and preparations. In addition to his corporate work, Mr. Osborn is active in several professional organizations. He is a member of the Project Management Institute, the International Coach Federation, Toastmasters International and the Association of International Emergency Managers. He is also the Past President of both the Quad Cities PMI Chapter and the Central Iowa PMI Chapter.

Academically, Mr. Osborn holds a Masters of Science in Management/Project Management, a Bachelor of Science in Defense Systems Management from Colorado Tech. and Certificates in project management, business management, change management, total quality management and configuration management

September Breakfast Meeting: PMP vs. Scrum Master: Compatible or Incompatible? With the advent of agile methodologies, a new role has emerged – that of Scrum Master. In many ways, a Scrum Master fills the same relative role on a project as a Project Manager. But is a Scrum Master really a project manager? How does the role of a Scrum Master differ from that of a Project Manager? Can a Scrum Master be a PMP at the same time without going crazy? Come attend this breakfast meeting to find out!

Speaker Karen Little, PMP, MBA, CSM, ITIL, of Magenic Technologies, has more than 33 years of information technology experience, with over 27 as a manager. She is the Chairperson for the 2007 Professional Development Days conference, as well as being an assistant web master for the PMI MN chapter.

Ms. Little has multiple years of hands on project management experience on both agile and traditional projects, and has also been a stand-up trainer. She is both a PMP and a Certified Scrum Master, as well as being certified in ITIL Foundation. She has recently contributed to the development of the Business Analyst Book of Knowledge, put out by the International Institute of Business Analysts, and is seeking certification as a Business Analyst Professional.

Interested in Habitat for Humanity?PMI MN is exploring the idea of doing some community service work via Habitat for Humanity. The two options we are exploring are:

One-Day-At-A-Time program–PMI MN volunteers would work on a Habitat for Humanity house one or multiple Saturdays sometime in the October to December timeframe. Volunteers would likely be doing finishing work on the interior of a house.

Mini-Workcamp program–PMI MN volunteers would work either a Wednesday through Friday or Thursday through Saturday shift sometime in the October to December timeframe, likely doing finishing work on the interior of a house.

Some questions for our membership that may have an interest in working on a Habitat for Humanity program:

1. Based on the program descriptions, which of these programs would be of interest? 2. With either program, Habitat requires that volunteers work a 8-hour shift. Would volunteering for a full day

be an issue? 3. Would working some weekdays be an issue? 4. Would working on a home in an outer suburb (e.g. Ramsey, Hastings, Savage) be an issue? (Habitat has

found that there are housing needs in these areas and is working to fill these needs.)

Based on your feedback we’ll make a decision how to proceed with working with Habitat for Humanity. Please email your thoughts to David Yutesler at [email protected]. Thank you in advance for your thoughts about this volunteer opportunity!

Professional Development Days October 29 – November 1, 2007: Master Craftsman: Building Project Success The 2007 PDD Planning Committee has been working very hard this past month preparing for the PMI Minnesota annual educational event: Master Craftsman: Building Project Success. By the time you receive this newsletter, you should already have received a post card reminding you to save the event dates on your calendars and plan to join us at the biggest PMI Minnesota event of the year.

The 2007 event will be held at the Earle Brown Heritage Center in Brooklyn Park, MN.

This professional conference center is located close to downtown Minneapolis at the intersection of Interstate 694/94 and Shingle Creek Parkway.

PDD Planning committee members made a recent visit to the center in order to make decisions about how to best use the space for the event. All agreed that the facility will provide us with adequate space and comfort. If you are interested in learning more about the new venue, visit their website at www.earlebrown.com. Future newsletter articles, the PMI (PDD) website and direct mail pieces will contain additional information about lodging options at or near the venue.

Additional updates on our planning progress:

The primary reason that PMI Minnesota delivers nationally recognized educational events is volunteers. PDD is currently seeking volunteers to assist with event delivery October 29 th to November 1 st. Volunteer to help for one or more days! Volunteers help to check in event attendees, act as room monitors, help set up and tear down equipment and assist event attendees, speakers and PDD planning in many other ways.

If you are interested in helping to deliver the 2007 PDD event, please go to the PMI Minnesota website (www.pmi-mn.org) and look for the volunteers’ link.

By the time this newsletter goes to press, most planning volunteer opportunities will be filled and planning completed. Any remaining opportunities for help with 2007 planning will be posted on the PMI Minnesota web site under the volunteers’ link. Look at the link again in November 2007 for planning committee opportunities for the 2008 event. We start 2008 planning in December 2007.

We are excited about this year’s event and hope that you will join us at this informative, fun and professionally rewarding experience!
