What is a noun?
Identifying nouns• Identify all nouns in the following
sentence: According to research, on average, people who use languages in their jobs earn around 8% more.
• Rewrite the sentence so that every noun begins with a big letter.
Nouns with a capital N!
• According to Research, on Average, People who use Languages in their Jobs earn around 8% more.
• All nouns written in German begin with a capital letter, regardless of where they are in a sentence.
Another complication• In the German language, all nouns
have a gender attached to them. • der – masculine• die – feminine• das – neuter
Identifying the gender
• Genders are sometimes, but not always, logical.
• Logical: der Bruder; die Schwester• Illogical: das Mädchen• There are some patterns, but the best way to

and cardinal directions are all masculine nouns.
