Detox diets are the new fad in the health industry. “What you need to do is detox!”, cries advertisements in magazines and health websites, with famous celebrities endorsing it. Quite a regular, aren’t they?

What are Detox Diets?

Vegetable juices to tea to pills and capsules, there is a lengthy list of food items promoted as detox diets. They claim to be super foods that would eliminate toxic chemicals that have accumulated in our body to restore us back to perfect health!

It usually involves following a strictly regulated diet of vegetables and fruit juices. Meat, caffeine and processed foods belonged to the forbidden category. It is claimed that an eating regime of this order would cleanse our body of unwanted toxins, reduce weight gain and power us with more energy. What is fiction, What is not? DETOXIFICATION :THE REALITY

According to British Dietic Association(BDA), the idea that following a special diet to eliminate waste from our body is not supported by scientific evidences. Instead, it is a proven fact that our body – lungs, kidneys and gastro intestinal tract - is naturally wired to periodically eliminate waste products and toxins on its own.

THE SIDE EFFECTS

• As per doctor’s reports, extreme detox diets are not nutritionally balanced. The body is not supplied with enough proteins and calories as in the case of normal diets.

• It leads to gradual loss of muscle mass and the person could experience dangerously low sugar levels, making him pass out. In extreme cases such imbalances can even lead to heart attack.

Detoxification of the body through detox diets like juice or water and fasting is therefore more of a myth than a reality!

• The biggest downside of all is that the weight loss achieved is usually not sustainable and is regained once a normal diet is resumed.
