Page 2: Determination

In 1883, a creative engineer named John Roebling was inspired to build a spectacular bridge connecting New York and Long

Island.

Roebling could not ignore the vision he had in his mind of this bridge.

Page 3: Determination

However, bridge building experts thought that this was an impossible feat.

It had never been done before.

He just had to share the dream with someone else.

Page 4: Determination

After much discussion and persuasion, Roebling managed to convince his son,

Washington, an upcoming engineer.

Working together, they developed concepts of how the obstacles could be

overcome.

With great inspiration to meet a challenge before them, they hired their

crew and began to build their dream bridge.

The project started well but after a few

months a tragic accident on the site took the life of John Roebling.

Page 6: Determination

Washington was injured with a certain amount of brain damage.

As a result he was not able to walk,

talk or even move.

Everyone had a negative comment to make and felt that the project should

be scrapped.

In spite of his handicap Washington was not discouraged and had a burning desire to complete the bridge.

He tried to inspire and pass on his enthusiasm to some of

his friends, but they were too scared.

Interaction

Page 9: Determination

Suddenly an idea hit Washington. All he could do was move his fingers and he decided to make the best use

of it.

He slowly developed a code of communication with his wife using

his fingers.

It seemed foolish; but the project was under way again.

Page 10: Determination

For 13 years Washington tapped out his instructions with his fingers on his wife’s arm, until the bridge was finally

completed.

Today the spectacular Brooklyn Bridge stands in all its glory.
