Detecting Calcite This is a fun experiment I chose to detect a mineral called, Calcite. It is a common mineral. Here is how to detect Calcite. You will need: vinegar, a cup (optional), rock. Fill the cup with vinegar which is a light acid. Drop the rock you chose into the cup of vinegar. If lots of bubbles start to rise to the surface, the rock has Calcite! This is because there is a chemical reaction going on. If there are no bubbles rising to the surface, that rock does not contain Calcite. Here are a few tips: NEVER, EVER use hydrochloric acid!! It can eat right through your skin! You may use any acid, as long as it is light. Those are safe acids for you to use.

Detecting Calcite

This is a fun experiment I chose to detect a mineral called, Calcite. It is a

common mineral. Here is how to detect Calcite.

You will need: vinegar, a cup (optional), rock.

Fill the cup with vinegar which is a light acid. Drop the rock you chose into the

cup of vinegar. If lots of bubbles start to rise to the surface, the rock has Calcite!

This is because there is a chemical reaction going on. If there are no bubbles

rising to the surface, that rock does not contain Calcite.

Here are a few tips:

• NEVER, EVER use hydrochloric acid!! It can eat right through your skin!

• You may use any acid, as long as it is light. Those are safe acids for you

to use.
