17:45 Conclusion
Abstracts:
Sunderstanding : Vivek Monteiro The sun is an unparallel resource for universalizing science. At no cost and low cost, simple tools can be constructed to
do non-trivial experiments. Day time astronomy has the potential to become mass scientific activity. Sunderstanding is
understanding what can be done with the sun as a scientific resource and as a learning resource.
Vivek Monteiro is a science communicator, who was trained as a theoretical physicist.
Chair: Rustam Vania
Respondents: Prajval Shastri, Sreekumar P
Scientific Culture: Encultured Science: Chayanika Shah Chayanika Shah is a former physicist, physics teacher, social scientist and social activist.
Chair: Jayant Murthy
Respondents: Niruj Mohan, Sabina von Kessel, Jyothsna Belliappa
Joys of Astrophotography - A Stellar Pastime: Ajay Talwar This is a short presentation which intends to convey the joy and satisfaction the author feels while pursuing
astrophotography. Today all astronomy and the associated science is conducted with astrophotography. Apart from
being a scientific pursuit, the business of collecting celestial photons is also an art form. The presentation covers both
aspects of astrophotography.
Ajay Talwar has been pursuing this stellar pastime for more than 20 years.
Chair: Shylaja BS
Respondents: Dibyendu Nandy, Joanna Griffin, Alison Byrns
Astronomy~ Astrology & Scientific Temper: K Pappootty India has made substantial progress in education but still people, educated in science, are lacking in scientific temper.
Astrology is the mother of almost all superstitions. The talk will give a brief history of how an observational science
like astronomy later decayed and was subverted to give rise to predictive astrology.
K Pappootty is a physics teacher and science communicator, and current director of the Encyclopedia Institute,
Government of Kerala .
Chair: Sabyasachi Chatterjee
Respondents: Prajval Shastri, Ravinder Banyal
The Scientist Child: The Unending joy of Discovery : Vijay Padaki The talk falls back on the speaker's experiences in some path breaking programmes of science teaching in the country
and attempts to integrate notions of scientific temper with cognitive development and personality development in children.
Vijay-Padaki is a theatre educator who has been committed to education enrichment over many years.
Chair: Indira Chowdhury
Respondents:, Sabyasachi Chatterjee, Svati Dandekar
Moon Vehicle Cafe: Joanna Griffin Moon Vehicle cafe critiques the dialogue of the space industry and astronomy research. It proposes that the formalised lecture rooms and offices of institutions, including the space of this symposium, are an obstacle to enriched, informed
and meaningful conversations taking place. Using examples from art practice and the Cafe Scientifique movement it
win look at how encounters, conversation and courage are needed to engage fully in the aspirational potential of our
connection to outer space.
Joanna Griffin is an artist who has worked closely with space science labs and the technology of satellites for the last
ten years. Since the launch in 2008 of Chandrayaan-l ; she has been leading the "Moon Vehicle" project out of Srishti
School of Art, Design and Technology.
Chair: Sreekumar P
Respondents: Sunilkumar, Kalpana Tanwar, Naveen Nanjundappa
