Booklet of 10 stamps414090111
The official birds of three provinces – the Steller’s jay (British Columbia), the snowy owl (Quebec) and the black-capped chickadee (New Brunswick) – join two other species with uniquely Canadian connections, the Canada goose and the whooping crane, for the final flight in the Birds of Canada stamp series.
Biologist David Gray and stamp illustrator Keith Martin worked closely on all three sets in the series, which debuted in 2016.
“I love Keith’s approach to these stamps – using a blend of reality and abstraction to not only portray the appearance of the bird, but also capture something of its behaviour,” Gray says.
While not our official national bird, the Canada goose is an ubiquitous resident whose noisy, awe-inspiring migrations herald the arrival of winter and spring. Once fairly common in Canada, the whooping crane – included at Gray’s suggestion – declined to fewer than 15 individuals by 1941 due to habitat loss. Thanks to international conservation measures, the population now numbers several hundred, the largest flock nesting in Alberta and the Northwest Territories in Wood Buffalo National Park.
“Most Canadians will never see a whooping crane, but this stamp celebrates the fact that they are still with us,” explains Gray. “This amazing bird is one of Canada’s most successful conservation stories.”

EMERGENCY RESPONDERSIssue date: September 14, 2018
It’s summertime and the living is easy – thanks in no small part to the thousands of emergency responders across Canada who are there for us when the unexpected happens.
Whether someone has strayed from a holiday hike, lost control of a camp fire or been involved in an accident on a busy cottage road, our paramedics, police officers, search and rescue experts, firefighters
and members of the Canadian Armed Forces are on hand to help at a moment’s notice.
On September 14, Canada Post will issue a set of five stamps honouring these brave men and women.
Watch for a special issue of Details in mid-September with a closer look at these spectacular stamps.
Available September 14 at your post office, at canadapost.ca or by telephone at 1-800-565-4362.

The re lease of the Canada Post Communit y Foundation’s fundraising semi-postal stamp signals the start of Canada Post’s annual fundraising campaign. Your dollar donation for a booklet of 10 stamps and 10 cents for the Official First Day Cover goes directly to support Canadian children and youth, through the funding of programs for breakfast, anti-bullying, special education, camps for children fighting illness, early literacy and other programs.
Designer Matthew Warburton of Emdoubleyu Design says of the inspiration behind the stamp, “Everyone can recall days from their childhood, spending a hot summer afternoon lying in the grass
looking up at the clouds rolling by. This design recreates that feeling of freedom, wonderment and joy with a child sitting on a grassy, flower-speckled hilltop, looking up at the sky and seeing animal shapes in the fluffy clouds.” The stamp was illustrated by Julie Morstad, one of Canada’s top illustrators of children’s books, whose work is honoured frequently in the Alcuin Society Book Awards.
Thanks to the generosity of our customers in 2017, the Canada Post Community Foundation provided $1.1 million in funding to grassroots and community-based child and youth organizations across the country.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN BIGHORN SHEEPIssue date: October 10, 2018
This large and magnificent beast is the perfect complement to our latest high-value definitive, denominated at $4. The stamp was produced by a combination of lithography and intaglio. Inspired by a photograph by Leonard Lee Rue III, it was designed and engraved by Canadian Bank Note master engraver Jorge Peral, with illustration provided by his son, Rodrigo Peral. The elder Peral’s work has graced several high-value definitives and other stamps, as well as paper currency.
Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis canadensis) inhabit the mountain ranges from British Columbia and Alberta south to Colorado and New Mexico. With balance-aiding split hooves and rough hoof bottoms for natural grip, they are known
for their ability to climb in high, steep rocky terrain. Rams, the male of the subspecies like the one featured on the stamp, have long curled horns, while ewes have shorter, curved ones. They feed on grasses or low-growing vegetation found on slopes where they can spot and escape predators, such as bears, wolves and cougars.
Overhunting, loss of habitat and transfer of diseases from domestic livestock significantly reduced the numbers of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Thanks to recent conservation efforts, some populations have increased and stabilized, but the bighorn sheep, still vulnerable to disease and habitat loss, is designated as a special concern in British Columbia.

DETA I L S 7 | AUGUST- OCTOBER 2018 9From other countries 902-863-6550
Included in Stamps of Canada October-December 2018 collector’s pack: single stamp from pane of 4.
One of the biggest challenges in creating an intaglio stamp is getting the right level of detail. According to Jorge Peral, it’s a fine balance. With too little detail, the intricate beauty of the subject – such as the fine fleece of the sheep or the grass, bent gently in the breeze – is lost. With too much, it can only be appreciated under a magnifying glass.
“Every artist has different goals,” explains Peral. “I love to make something that the public can appreciate with the bare eye.”
The issue includes a pane of four gummed stamps (souvenir sheet), a single stamp Official First Day Cover both designed by David Craib of Parable Communications, an uncut press sheet with nine panes of four stamps signed by master engraver Jorge Peral, a framed and numbered lithographic print, with the stamp, signed by Rodrigo Peral, and a framed enlargement of the stamp image, plus the actual stamp, similar to previous collectibles offered in the engraved high-value definitive line.
