History

Dinwiddie County was es-tablished on May 1, 1752 from Prince George County. The county is named for Robert Dinwiddie, lieutenant governor of Virginia from 1751-58. However, the fi rst inhabitants of the area were Paleo Indians from before 8000 B.C. and who are believed to have been nomadic hunter-gath-erers following of animal migra-tions. Early stone tools have been discovered in various fi elds within the county. The county raised several militia units that fought in the American Revolution. During the Civil War, the Battle of Lewis’s Farm, fought along Quaker Road [Route 660] occurred on March 29, 1865. This was the fi rst in a series of attempts by the Union Army, led by Gen. Ulysses Grant to cut the Gen. Robert E, Lee’s fi nal Con-federate supply line -- the South

Side Railroad -- in spring 1865. Here the Union forces led by Brig. Gen. Joshua L. Chamberlain en-gaged Confederates under Maj. Gen. Bushrod R. Johnson. After sharp fi ghting, the Union troops entrenched nearby along the Boydton Plank Road and Johnson withdrew to his lines at White Oak Road. The Union Army cut the rail line four days later, after capturing the Five Forks intersec-tion on April 1, 1865, at the Battle of Five Forks. The following morning at approximately 4:40 a.m., Grant sent the Sixth Corps, some 14,000 strong, pouring over the Confederate fortifi cations near Tudor Hall Plantation, now pre-served by Pamplin Historical Park. This attack broke Lee’s defensive line around Petersburg and com-pelled Lee to order the evacua-tion of Petersburg and Richmond that night. Lt, General Ambrose Powell Hill, one of Lee’s highest-ranking subordinates, was killed

near what is now Pamplin Histori-cal Park while riding to take com-mand of the battlefi eld. Several other engagements were fought in Dinwiddie County including the Battle of Dinwiddie Court House, Battle of Sutherland’s Station and the Battle of White Oak Road. The Dinwiddie County Historical Society currently occupies the old historic Dinwiddie County Court House.Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 507 square miles and 504 square miles is land with the other 3 square miles consisting of water. The county is located between Fort Lee to the east and Fort Pickett to its west.Demographics

According to the 2010 U.S. Census, there are 28,001 people living in Dinwiddie County. The county consists of 9,800 house-

holds with an average of 2.71 persons per household. The median household income is $51,459 and 11.8 percent of the county population lived below the federal poverty level. The racial composition of the county is 64.6 percent white, 33 percent black and the rest a variety of races, including 1.4 percent who say they are two or more races. The county includes 2,420 veterans, and 14.1 percent of the population is over the age of 65 while 21.9 percent of the population is under 18 years old. Females account for 50.8 percent of the county population. On Thursday, October 4th, Dinwiddie Elementary School participat-ed in the annual Jump Start’s Read for the Record 2012. This is a yearly event that is held nationwide to bring attention to the importance of early childhood education. The goal is to have everyone read the same book on the same day across the nation. This year the chosen book was Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad by David Somanand illustrated by Jacky Davis. Faculty and staff members along with many students dressed up as bug squad members. All of the children in the building read the story in their classrooms and participated in extension activities to celebrate the occasion. The DES Volunteer Coordinators, Samantha Voda and Debo-rah Jensen, created a reading hive/hideout where small groups of Title I students were able to gather and read the story on the nook color digital readersthroughout the day. Many beautiful projects adorn the hallways of DES as a result of this fabulous day!

Economic Development

One of the largest Dinwiddie County economic development projects in years took place this year as Amazon.com opened a massive new distribution center. In September, the newly opened distribution celebrated the shipping of its fi rst package — a 5-quart Crock-Pot slow cooker sent to a Michigan customer. The online retailer’s building has 1 million square feet of fl oor space and ships products ranging from electronics and sports equipment to small kitchen appliances and toys.Offi cials say about 250 people initially joined the distribution

and the company expects to hire more people as the holiday season approaches. Amazon.com broke ground on the center in December 2011, when the company announced plans to invest $135 million in two facilities in the area that would employ a total 1,350 people. The online retail giant is expected to have 1,000 workers in Chesterfi eld County and 350 workers in Dinwiddie County. The Dinwiddie facility will handle large items purchased through the retail website and could see an uptick in production through the holiday season that could support an additional 400 temporary jobs.
