With an extensive concert schedule, Burgenland - the most eastern province o Austria - celebrates the 200th birthday o Franz Liszt. He was a superstar o his time:

Franz Liszt the manic acrobat o the piano who perormed to packed concert halls all over Europe and composed nonstop, and who in his spare time was also a

cosmopolitan, intellectual and heartthrob. Lisztomania, a term coined by German writer Heinrich Heine as early as the nineteenth century, is the motto o all the

events o the Liszt Year 2011. The modern Liszt Centre in Raiding/Burgenland (1hrs outside o Vienna) - well known or its outstanding acoustics - is located directly

adjacent to the shingled house in Raiding where the composer was born on 1811. Organisers are staging an annual event, simply called Listestival small but

sophisticated located right at the genius birthplace. This year the estival devotes itsel to dierent acets o this versatile composer: tribute is paid to Liszt the

European, the symphonist, the vocal composer and, o course, the pianist.

In 2012, Austria will comprehensively recognise Gustav Klimt in celebration o his birth 150 years ago: His paintings, in particular The Kiss one o the worlds

best-known masterpieces are rightly seen as epitomizing the spirit o optimism that heralded the dawn o the modernist era. With 22 pieces by the artist, Viennas

Belvedere is home to the worlds largest Klimt collection. There are also major works on display at the Leopold Museum, the Wien Museum and the Albertina.

Contemporary documents and other exhibits at the MAK and the Austrian National Library reveal yet more about Klimt and his lie. During 2012, Klimts anniversary

year, visitors to Vienna can experience how the artist and his Wiener Moderne contemporaries shape our thoughts and lives to this day, and discover why this era has

lost nothing o its allure over time.

Then the scream. Te breaking o the dams. Te audiencescreeches, claps, takes up the rhythm o the piece that has justended. Te people dance and jump about, and i they hadenough space, they would stand on their heads or joy. On thestage the members o the band exchange looks. One nods his

head, and the drummer goes back into action, while the horns getready or a nal anare. And when the last note has died away, thereis nothing let but happiness that one has spent the evening here, inthe rooed yard o the Sandgrube, where every autumn hundredso small armers deliver their grapes, which will be made into winein the cellars o the winegrowers cooperative. And speaking o wine, the sound o corks popping rom bottles in the tents on the edge o

the yard remind one that its high time or a cool spritzer.Glatt und verkehrt is a specialized term in the eld o nee-dlework that reers to a particular knitting pattern: the knit stitch, ollowed by a purl stitch. One loop is lited onto the needle romabove, and one rom below. Tis results in a harmonious structure, asurace that is smooth despite consisting o contrary elements.

A ew clever people rom the music department o 1, Aus-trias highbrow radio station, borrowed the term glatt und ver-kehrt and used it as the title or a splendid new music estival: aolk-music estival with music rom all over the world. And since1997, when the rst edition o Glatt&Verkehrt was presented, stupendously procient practitioners o every imaginable kind omusic have made their way to the town o Krems and its surround-ing area: Pakistani alsetto singers, Mexican mariachi trumpeters,Nigerian unk artists and unisian oud virtuosos, but also the brassband right rom Krems, along with grandsons and nephews. Temusic lls the air or two summer weeks at very remarkable venues in the courtyard o the Winzer Krems winery, at Gttweig Abbey, inthe castle courtyard in Spitz and at the Minorite monastery in Stein.Glatt&Verkehrt perorms the eat o getting audiences to come tothe concerts in droves with no apprehension about strange sounds, with open hearts and ull o aith in the musical warmth and sincer-ity that characterize the estival. And then there is the view o thestage and the wonder when one turns or a moment and glimpsesthe illuminated Gttweig Abbey perched high on the other side othe Danube, the moon and the stars.

What a stage set. Te vineyard terraces where the Grner Velt-liner and Riesling grapes grow. Te remnants o the Middle Ages oneencounters on the way down to the old section o Krems. Places andimpressions that take anyone with a bit o imagination on a jour-ney back through history, just as the Glatt&Verkehrt musiciansbring the world with them to Krems and take their listeners on a triparound the world.

Beyond Krems begins the Wachau Valley, which extendssome thirty kilometres downriver to the Baroque Melk Abbey. Te

Wachau was named by UNESCO as a World Cultural Landscape, and it lacks or nothing: the mighty river is lined with terraced vine-yards rising rom the banks, orests, orchards, broad-shouldered pa-trician houses, picturesque villages, rocky outcrops, and colourulchurch steeples.

Te Wachau Valley, located in LowerAustria, extends rom Krems thirtykilometres downriver along theDanube.

A journey through the Wachau nonetheless has its perils. Oneis constantly detained along the way by inns, wineries and restaurantterraces where one can enjoy views o the river while sampling thetraditional apricot dumplings the Marillenkndel. Te Wachauis blessed with a wealth o culinary riches. It is known or its ruit, es-pecially the amed Wachau apricots, but the real celebrities are itswines. White wines o outstanding quality grow on the terraces andsteep inclines between Krems and Spitz. A large number o vintners,in particular those producing Grner Veltliner and Riesling, haveachieved cult status ar beyond the borders o Austria. No one whostudies wine lists in top restaurants around the world is surprised tond names there like F.X. Pichler, Emmerich Knoll, Leo Alzinger,Rudi Pichler, Franz Hirtzberger or Jose Jamek. Te robust and

ruity white wines o the highest quality level have received their ownclassication: Smaragd.Knit and purl: while the voluminous Smaragd wines have

ound appreciative audiences, new philosophies are sprouting be-tween the traditional wine estates o the area. In Spitz, Peter Vey-der-Malberg is viniying white wines that ollow the philosophy othe more elegant, mineral and clear German Rieslings. Te Pichler-Krutzler winery is striving to replace the typical Wachau opulence inits whites with more elegance.

Knit and purl, glatt und verkehrt: this also applies to theenviable culinary oerings in the Wachau. Te area has its tradi-tional strongholds o ne middle-class cooking rst and oremostLandhaus Bacher, in Mautern, beloved by restaurant reviewers and aleader in the rened treatment o regional products, oten with theodd Mediterranean pirouette. And Loibnerho, in Unterloiben, witha garden o unrivalled beauty and an astonishingly precise touch inits preparation o the classics o Austrian cuisine. And Restaurant

Jamek, in Joching, where the light and delectable are is as much oa tradition as the renowned house wines.

Apart rom these well-known xtures o the gourmet scene, however, a great variety o ne but lesser-known eateries ourish onthe Wachaus periphery. Kremss Gasthaus Jell, situated on one othe towns loveliest squares, celebrates hearty, stomach-lling are.Restaurant Nigl, with the ruins o Sentenberg Castle towering inthe background, serves sh and venison o superb quality (and hal-portions are entirely sufcient unless one has been asting or a year). In Nhagen, Gasthaus Schwarz specializes in careully preparedstews and roasts, and it possesses a cellar ull o exquisite vintages, especially French wines whose prices bring tears o joy to the eyes othe oenophile.

Te applause shows no signs o stopping, and the bandmarches back onto the stage. A collective sigh o relie goes up.Te musical bliss is not over yet, and although one knows it willreturn in the orm o other singers and instrumentalists at one othe Glatt&Verkehrt venues beneath the towering vaulted ceilingo the Minorite Church, at Spitz Castle, on the high plateau oGttweig Abbey, or on the terrace o Zhrer Winery, right aroundthe corner it should still linger a bit longer, this bliss.

Ten the trumpets enter, as keen and quick as an Arabian stal-lion. Eating and drinking can wait.

ART NOUVEAU AND MODERNISM IN ARCHITECTURE

Visitors to the Austrian capital will fnd evidence o the turning artistic tidein late nineteenth and early twentieth century Vienna everywhere they look.Architecture in the city was shaped by the nascent Jugendstil (art nouveau)as well as the Secessionist style.

The Secession building, completed in 1898 by Joseph Maria Olbrich,is one o the best known examples o Viennese art nouveau. Thispioneering building near the Naschmarkt was the frst ehibition hall inCentral Europe to be dedicated eclusively to modern art, and is widelycredited as being one o Europes most original art nouveau constructions.Gstav Klimt submitted two designs or the building in 1897, which wascommissioned as an alternative to the Knstlerhaus.

Other than the Secession building, which provided ehibition premises orKlimt and his younger contemporaries, Vienna is packed with thoght-provoking architectre that bears witness to the progressive spirit oKlimts day. Architects Otto Wagner and Jose Homann shaped theAustrian capital like no others, accounting or a large slice o the citys artnouveau building stock.

The stations, viaducts and decoration o the ormer Stadtbahn (urbanrailway), the Majolikahaus and Musenhaus on the Wienzeile, Europes frstmodernist church (St. Leopold am Steinho) and the Postsparkasse SavingsBank on the Ringstrasse were all designed by Otto Wagner. There is apermanent ehibition dedicated to Wagners oeuvre at the Postsparkasse(www.ottowagner.com).

Jose Homanns villas in the 19th district are well worth a look. Two more o Wagners students, Jose Plecnik and Ma Fabiani, cameup with the design or the Chrch o the Holy Spirit, the Artaria Hoseand the urania bilding. One landmark building in the history o modernarchitecture in Vienna has lost none o its appeal to this day - but when itfrst appeared the Adol Loos bilding on Michaelerplatz was reviledby Emperor Franz Joseph and a population more at home withhistoricist architecture.

Jose Homann and Gustav Klimt joined orces to work on the PalaisStoclet in Brussels. Between 1905 and 1909 Klimt designed the StocletFrieze. His nine study sketches are on display in Vienna at the MAK. TheMAK also owns the estate o the world-amous Wiener Werksttte whichcontains studies, model books, photo volumes, original abric patterns, embroideries and the ull company archive.

In 2012 numerous Wiener Werksttte ehibits will go on show at theMAK including urniture, vases, tableware, and postcards rom JoseHomann, Kolo Moser, Dagobert Peche and other Wiener Werksttteartists. www.mak.at

All o these buildings, and countless more art nouveau gems throughoutthe city, have a timeless appeal.

Visitors can discover them under their own steam or on one o thecontless art novea tors, conducted by government-approvedtour guides. www.vienna.ino

Over the last years, more and more stylish lounges disappeared on the Austrian mountains, where agood glass o wine can be tasted in a modern designed ambience in high altitude.
