Brothers,

On August 8th, many members of DeSoto Lodge had the privilege to be present at the Installation Ceremony for

the Walter Fishback Chapter, Order of the DeMolay. During the ceremony, the Chapter received their Charter

from DeMolay International. The young men of this Chapter have worked extremely hard over the past several

years to meet the requirements and I congratulate them all on this great achievement. There were over 150 people

in attendance. It was great to see the support of our Masonic Community and the families of these young men on

this great occasion. We were also honored to have Walter Fishback’s family present for the ceremony. The Chap-

ter presented the family with a plaque honoring Walter. DeSoto Lodge’s Brothers Bobby Marshall and Adam Bar-

soum, members of the Fishback family, were also present. Right Worshipful Frank Lowe spoke of Walter

Fishback, the qualities of this great man, and what he meant for our fraternity and our lodge.

I wanted thank the officers and Brothers of our lodge participating in the installation. Lady Roni Kay Lopez also

prepared an outstanding meal on behalf of the lodge to help celebrate the occasion. It is a wonderful feeling seeing

these young men receiving the support of our Masonic Community and their families on this great occasion.

We also had the opportunity on August 4th to welcome Right Worshipful Don Cowart, District Deputy Grand Mas-

ter for the 23rd Masonic District, for his official visit to our lodge. There was 53 Master Masons present for the

visit and to hear the Grand Master’s message delivered by Right Worshipful Cowart. It was with great pride that

we were presented Right Worshipful Cowart with his Honorary Membership to DeSoto Lodge. He has long been

a strong supporter of our lodge and it was great to show our love and appreciation to him.

The month has been filled with great events and great news. Our new roof is now completed! I want to thank

Brothers Steve Wilson and Dennis Cliff for all their work on this project. I wanted to also thank all of the Brothers

for supporting this project. We also had another great school supply drive for Thomas Elementary School located

in Ruskin. I want to thank Worshipful Troy DiVito for all his efforts in making this project another huge success.

As always, it could not have happened without the support of our Brothers and their families!

In closing, I wish you and your family health and happiness. If there is anything I can do for you, please do not

hesitate to contact me. May the Great Architect of the Universe bless each of you and your families. May he pro-

tect and keep safe all of the men and women that serve our great nation at home and abroad.

Fraternally,

Bill Tracy

From the West

S.W. Steve Wilson

Greetings from the West, Walter Fishback chapter Order of DeMolay received their charter on August

8th with over 150 visitors, brothers, family and friends in attendance. RWDDGM Don Cowart was also

on hand to see the DeMolay installation and charter presentation. It was an honor to be a part of the De-

Molay installation and I look forward to working with these young men in the future. If there is anything

we can do for you please feel free to ask. A special shout out to Miss Roni -K for the fabulous pulled

pork dinner served for the DeMolay installation. Her continued support of our lodge is much appreciated.

She also recruited a Boy Scout from Troop 101 to help serve and clean up. The rains have finally sub-

sided and our roof is now complete. Our next endeavor will be to replace the ceiling tiles in both the

lodge room and dining hall which will give our lodge a clean new look. Our school supply drive for

Thomas Elementary School was a huge success again this year. Thanks to all for your continued support

of our south county youth, through your donations we were able to aide our less fortunate children in the

public school system. Thanks for all you do, your efforts make a difference.

Fraternally

CHAPLAIN'S CORNER

By Bill Bartman

YOU LOST YOUR TEMPER. WHERE IS IT?

It’s difficult to deal with the issue of temper and anger, but it is a very necessary attribute to control and master as a Mason. Anger is a God-given emotion, and is referred to in the Bible as anger or wrath. Almighty God Himself displayed His wrath many times in response to disobedience by His people. If everyone has a temper, and the emotion of anger, how do we control it and display the attributes of a “good man getting better?”

I believe the key to understanding this emotion has to do with communication and timing. We often respond im-pulsively and immediately to a situation before we have a chance to understand what just happened or what was meant by what was said. My mother used to say, “Just count to 10…it will help you settle down before you react. There is a lot of truth in making ourselves wait and think before we react. How often I’ve said or done something in anger, and after I heard the details of the situation, I was so sorry about my reaction! But sometimes, saying “I’m sorry” just doesn’t work to make things right.

The Bible gives us two specific insights in this area: 1) Be ye angry and sin not, and 2) Let not the sun go down upon your wrath. We know that the Bible is our guidebook, as Masons, for how to live a good and pure life. And it tells us that whatever we do that breaks one of the rules given by God is called sin. So, it’s okay to get angry, but KEEP IT UNDER CONTROL! Don’t say or do something you’ll be sorry for after you’ve calmed back down. The second thing tells us to GET OVER IT! When it says don’t let the sun go down upon your wrath, it simply means make amends or whatever is necessary as quickly as possible. It will only fester and get worse if you don’t.

We all know that just a little spark can start an immense wildfire like the ones we see on the news from Califor-nia. If that ember or spark was extinguished while small, the wildfire never would have been created. So it is with our emotions. If something is said or done that “lights our fuse,” we have to decide to resolve it AFTER we get clarification on the purpose and intention of what was said or done, and THEN react in a way befitting a Mason. The Bible says that a kind word calms wrath, and a good countenance subdues evil. It takes time, patience, understanding, and open com-munication, but the problems can, indeed, be resolved without losing our temper. And, you’ll be a better man and have more self-respect and confidence than one who chooses to fight, argue, and/or cause dissension.

Losing our temper and having it come back reminds me of the story about the Australian who bought himself a new boomerang, and then couldn’t throw the old one away. We can’t get rid of our temper and anger, because it’s a built-in, human emotion. But we must learn to control it. Nobody needs to suffer a heart attack or stroke from high blood pressure or other problems brought on by uncontrolled rage, do they?

Enjoy life. Stay laid back. Keep smiling. Let the stones hurled at you just roll off your back and continue hav-ing a good life with your family, friends, and brother Masons. It’s the sign of a good man getting better and better.

Don’t forget our pancake breakfast on the 27th(Bro Lyle looks right at home)

Labor Day, the very idea of the holiday invokes the excitement of barbeques, back to school for our chil-dren and the end of summer. Labor Day is now marked by the first Monday in September, but the first la-bor day was actually on a Tuesday, Tuesday September 5th 1882 to be exact. It was celebrated for the first time in New York City and was organized by the Central Labor Union. So who started Labor Day? Well, the answer can not be definitively answered. There are two men who are credited with its creation. Peter McGuire and Mathew Maguire were both labor leaders and worked for the rights of workers. Peter was a carpenter and Mathew a machinist. Many people ask whether either of these two men were members of our great fraternity, the Freemasons. Of these two men, Peter McGuire was a member of a Brotherhood. It just wasn't the Freemasons. He belonged to the Brotherhood of Carpenters and was quoted as saying something which to me, sounds Masonic in nature... [There needs to be a day to celebrate those] "who from rude nature have delved and carved all the gran-deur we behold" However promising this sounds, neither Peter nor Mathew have any record of being involved or affiliated with the Freemasons. . Have a happy and safe Labor Day!
