What is VirtualizationWhat is Virtualization
Virtualization is the creation of a virtual (rather than actual) version of something. In IT terms … operating systems, servers, storage devices, network resources or desktop computers.
Virtualization has become a strategic trend with many IT organizations today.
Centralize administrative tasks
Improving scalability and overall hardware-resource utilization.

What is VirtualizationWhat is Virtualization
Virtualization is the creation of a virtual (rather than actual) version of something.
Dividing a hard drive into different partitions is a sample of the basic concept of virtualization.
A partition is the logical division of a hard disk drive to create, in effect, two separate hard drives.

Virtualization GrowthVirtualization Growth
Virtualization software in many forms is being adopted faster than anyone could have imagined.
Four areas of IT where virtualization has and continues to make head roads:
◦ Network virtualization
◦ Storage virtualization
◦ Server virtualization
◦ Desktop virtualization

Virtualization In ITVirtualization In IT
Desktop virtualization is the separation of a personal computer desktop environment or experience from the actual physical machine.
It’s the encapsulation and delivery of a single user computer environment to a client device.
Transforms the desktop from a device to an experience

This means the client device may use an entirely different hardware architecture.
A desktop virtualization lets multiple network subscribers maintain individualized desktops on a single, centrally located computer or server.

The central machine may operate:◦ At locally at a business, or a remote data
center.
◦ May be geographically scattered,
◦ Connected either directly to a host system or connected by a local network, a wide area network, or even the public Internet.

Virtual Machine Virtual Machine (Desktop)(Desktop)
There are a variety of different virtual desktop infrastructure designs (VDIs)
In almost every case you are running some type of Virtual machine or desktop.
A virtual machine or VM is the result of a software implementation of a computing environment in which an operating system (OS) or program can be installed and run.

Different VDIs

Virtual Machine Virtual Machine (Desktop)(Desktop)
The virtual machine emulates a physical computing environment
Requests for CPU, memory, hard disk, network and other hardware resources are managed by a virtualization layer.
VMs are created within a virtualization layer, such as a hypervisor or a virtualization platform

Virtual Machine Virtual Machine (Desktop)(Desktop)
The guest operating systems and programs are not aware that they are running on a virtual platform
Are installed in the same way it would be deployed to physical server hardware.
The guest OS might appear to have a physical hard disk attached to it, but actual I/O requests are translated by the virtualization layer Guest operating systems

VMs can be easily moved, copied, and reassigned between host servers to optimize hardware resource utilization.
It simplifies backups, disaster recovery, new deployments and basic system administration tasks.
Comes with several additional and important management tools that are designed to manage VMs.

A hypervisor, also called a virtual machine manager, allows multiple operating systems to share a single hardware host.
Each operating system appears to have the host's processor, memory, and other resources all to itself.
The hypervisor controls the host processor and resources, allocating what is needed to each operating system

VDI TypesVDI Types
VDI of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure is the computing model that enables desktop virtualization
It encompasses the hardware and software systems required to support the virtualized environment.
Currently there are a few VDIs to choose from, each with their own strengths and weaknesses … they are:
Hosted … Desktop as a service
Remote Sync
Centralized
Client – Hosted - Multi-seat PC

VDI Types – Hosted VDI Types – Hosted
Hosted Virtual Desktop is typically a service provided through an outsourced or hosted subscription model
Client is delivered across a private or public network
Computation takes place on a system that the users have logged
Edge device basically is for input and display only.

VDI Types – Hosted VDI Types – Hosted
Strength – Scalable, easy to add users, minimum capital investment, flexibility in end user devices.
Weakness – No control over desktop usability or content, ongoing subscription costs, dependence on outside organization for quality of service, requires constant network connection to operate (no off line option).

VDI Types - CentralizedVDI Types - Centralized
The Centralized Model relies upon a constant network or internet connection to the server where the VDI instance is running.
There are a number of different software options relative to how the VM is managed and delivered by the server.
Computation takes place on a centralized server. The desktop device is for input and display only.

VDI Types - CentralizedVDI Types - Centralized
Strength – Control, management, relatively inexpensive to add additional users, control content and desktop functionality
Weakness – High capital cost for initial set-up, requires robust servers and network, requires specific knowledge and expertise, single point of failure

VDI Types - Multi-Seat PC VDI Types - Multi-Seat PC
The Client-hosted and Multi-Seat PC model uses centralized local servers to manage virtual machine
Local execution eliminates the infrastructure required for large server based
Reduces network bandwidth consumption

Thin Client VDTThin Client VDT
Server based VDI - One to Many – Connected using Network technology
Requires specific skills and knowledge to setup, manage and maintain effectively.
Not all applications are compatible with this environment.
End Users do not get separate IP address.
Considered the low cost low, performance alternative. Thin Client

HYBRID HOSTED VDTHYBRID HOSTED VDT
Hybrid Virtual Desktop Client Hosted environment such as “VMWARE” requires specific skills and knowledge to setup, manage and maintain effectively.
Requires a robust network and a high-end server (expensive to deploy).
Considered the high cost / medium performance alternative.
Hybrid Virtual Desktop
Free Powerpoint TemplatesPage 25
One to Few VDI - Typically dedicated resources which results in the performance comparable to a standalone PC.
Each user gets their own IP and MAC addresses
Each of the user’s “stations” are directly connected (Keyboard, Mouse and Monitor) to the host system, which means they operate in native mode and act just like a standalone PC.
Multi-Seat VDTMulti-Seat VDT
Multi-Seat VDI Option

Multi-Seat VDI is not a server based system reducing the capital cost requirements.
Each user is connected directly to separate video cards so there is no degradation in performance even if running video intense application on all stations.
The Multi-seat Desktop Virtualization alternative requires no specialized knowledge.
The low cost / high performance solution.

VDT FutureVDT Future
As the VDT technology continues to advance and the demand for device flexibility continues to rise … VDT will become a key element in all IT strategies.
It would be safe to say that almost every IT department has deployed or plans to deploy some form of VDT in the near future.

VDT FutureVDT Future
Most will likely deploy a hybrid suite of VDI solutions based on specific needs of their various continuance.
Device independent, consistent user experiences needs will drive VDT to be mainstream part of all IT department offerings over the next 5 years.

All users are directly connected to the host system so there are no issues with bandwidth or video quality as a result of network dependence.
All functions happen natively and computations locally.

It is deployed by installing a Fiddlehead “Client” or Hypervisor-like kernel on each system you wish to manage utilizing Fiddlehead.
The Fiddlehead “Enterprise Control Console or Panel” ECP is then set up … usually on a virtual server
This Enterprise Control Panel allows you to manage all of the Fiddlehead ready systems that are attached to the network from anywhere on the network using a secure web based portal.

In a typical Windows based computer architecture there is a series of abstraction layers: hardware, firmware, abstract control kernel, operating system and applications.
These layers work together to allow users to interact with the technology and execute instructions that are inherent in the applications they are using.
The Fiddlehead “client” is a very small Linux based control kernel that resides between the hardware and the Windows OS.
It provides Windows with a library of highly efficient and portable drivers that allow all devices associated with the Windows operating system to operate normally.
This Fiddlehead control kernel allows the Windows operating system to directly utilize the CPU and memory.
The video, NIC, and sound drivers (among other devices) are virtualized.
The user actually interacts with the system through a Virtualized Desktop environment, that resides above the Fiddlehead kernel .
