pattern for the development of web applications.Following the modular design approach, presentation,

business logic, and data functions are separated into

independent tiers. This allows their logical autonomy

to be matched by their physical implementation,

THE PRESENTATION TIER

At the top of the application stack, the presentation tier

is responsible for providing content to a web browser

and elding user requests for new pages. Requests that

require business logic, such as logging into a site, add-

ing a product to a shopping cart, or performing a search

request, are passed to the next lower layer, the business

logic tier, for processing. Not being tightly coupled to the

business logic, the presentation tier can be updated and

scaled independently to meet performance demands.

However, as the public face of the application stack, the

presentation tier must be protected by a rewall andmust itself be hardened against attacks. Red Hat secu-

rity features and technologies provide these critical

services, including mandatory access control provided

by SELinux.

The most prevalent web server, Apache, is a standard

part of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and provides the

foundation for servicing web requests. For web pres-

ences that serve large quantities of static pages,

Red Hat Enterprise Linux offers a web accelerator,

the Squid proxy server, that can signicantly increase

the response time for static pages.

THE BUSINESS LOGIC TIER

The middle of the web application stack is occupied

by the business logic tier, which is responsible forall actions that require understanding of the busi-

ness rules that govern operation of the application.

Therefore, this tier typically requires more powerful

servers. Because this tier is the brains of the web

application, it also typically requires 24x7 support,

provided by a subscription to Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Advanced Platform.

JBoss Enterprise Application Platform is the ideal

choice for an application server container because Java

continues to be the language of choice for developing

web applications. It is a high-performance, standards-

based platform, and provides a critical balance between

innovation and stability. The JBoss Open Choice strat-

egy allows developers to use only the components they

need, choosing from a spectrum that spans from a

lightweight Java application server to the entire enter-

prise platform. Other useful technologies include theJBoss Seam framework that presents a single uni-

ed API interface to other Java frameworks (such as

AJAX, Java Server Faces, and Enterprise Java Beans,

Java Portlets, and Business Process Management), and

JBoss Hibernate Framework that provides high-perfor-

mance object/relational persistence and query services.

Effectively managing and applying business rules

may be the most valuable task performed in the busi-

ness logic tier. That task is simplied by using JBoss

Enterprise BRMS, a robust business rules management

system that speeds development, modication, and the

use of rules sets. With JBoss Enterprise BRMS, business

analysts and auditors can easily examine your business

rules and verify that they match your business require-

ments. The result is a cleaner and more exible

application architecture.

Your legacy enterprise applications still provide busi-

ness value that can be integrated with your web busi-

ness logic tier. JBoss Enterprise SOA Platform has a

standards-based architecture that gives you a choice

of integration styles, including enterprise application

integration and SOA service integration.

THE DATA TIER

The data tier occupies the bottom of the application

stack, and abstracts the database or physical storage

that sits below it. The abstraction allows changes to the

Priceline.coms application availability runs >99.97 percent and hits 100 per-

cent for most quarters. With Red Hat Enterprise Linux, the company has realized

reduced security patching requirements than with some proprietary application

tion, Priceline.com IT has been successful in proportionally reducing its relevant
