CONFERENCE PROGRAMME
In 2018 atmospheric carbon dioxide levels reached their highest in millions of years, and experts calculate that the average global temperature rises could hit the symbolic 2°C threshold by 2050. To stop enormous environmental and social repercussions we must act now.
The construction industry is one of the most unsustainable areas in the world, the built environment sector is responsible to at least 40% of carbon emissions. In London, to be able to meet carbon reduction targets to make the capital carbon neutral by 2050, we need practical solutions that the industry can implement in the short term.
The challenge is big: there are hundreds of thousands of homes and offices to make more energy efficient, decarbonising the national grid, install low-carbon heating systems, and move towards a more circular design, zero waste, sustainable materials approach.
On the other side, the need to make our city resilient to future hotter climate should be part of the climate agenda. Overheating is already a problem and causes serious health issues.
How do we make sure urban design and architecture can provide beautiful and quality outcomes while creating resilient, socially and environmentally sustainable buildings?
This NLA conference discusses how to make London a truly sustainable, zero-carbon city, addressing sustainable materials and innovation in construction methods, lessons learned and case studies on reducing carbon emissions from the design and construction industry.
