EDITO Designer’s Days is celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2010.
And, in order to put a stop to the endless round of
« Happy Birthdays », instead, allow us to employ the term
« Rendezvous ».
For the past ten years, Designer’s Days has become a summer
Rendezvous attended by an increasingly varied public, and it
is this diversity which we are targeting. Designers, architects,
interior decorators, brand ambassadors, amateurs, collectors,
curious onlookers, all are looking for the thrills which may be
found around a corner in a window display.
In addition to this varied public, we also want to show the
extent to which, now more than ever, design has become
polymorphous and omnipresent in everyday life. Not very
long ago, we were happy to hear the expression « grammaire
du quotidien » (1). Thanks to Designer’s Days this grammar
is now conjugated in the plural : scenographies whichre count
(beautiful) stories, debates which question the meaning of
the discipline, institutions which mobilize their forces, school
projects. All this refl ects what is essential : knowledge and
creativity are a matter of initiation and transmission.
Thus, the Designer’s Days circuit in 2010 will refl ect the
event’s vocation : to be a federative platform which brings
together players, goodwill and energy as well as large-scale
industry stakeholders and small-scale designers, all
wishing to convey a common message, that design is central
to a more harmonious and more effective society.
We are now able to count on strong national and international
partners which, beyond Paris, are joining their voices to our
own. Projects for Designer’s Days circuits are being outlined
in Marseilles, Bordeaux and Nantes. Others are appearing
beyond our borders: in Italy, where we have built fruitful
exchanges with a sister event inaugurated last October,
Design-in-the-City, and in Israel, which a delegation from
our association visited recently.
If we could make one wish for our anniversary, it would be
that these projects continue to fl ourish to form a genuine
network devoted to the promotion of design.

Theme for 2010
“ TEN YEARS OLD ! ”
2010 marks an important date for Designer’s Days.
10 years old. A fi rst anniversary to be celebrated with
satisfaction and humility as to what has been achieved
during this fi rst decade, which, as for all fi rsts, offers
promising prospects for the association’s future.
With the number 10, a symbolic number, we certainly think
about celebration, but a celebration which, voluntarily, is
forward-looking. Exploring new avenues, even exploring ten
avenues, in order to gain an insight into what the state of
creativity in the participants will be in 10 years time.
Above all, not looking backwards, not paying tribute by rolling
out the red carpet, but acknowledging the dynamism and
creative energy of designers who, through their creations,
will shape our future environment. 10 can also be 10
objects, 10 designers, 10 ways of celebrating contemporary
creation… It is a number with infi nite possibilities on which
binary arithmetic is based, as well as 1.0, the basis of digital
architecture which has taken over our everyday world.
Therefore, « Tell me ten » offers each establishment its very
own « 10 », which we intend to be 10 times more surprising,
10 times more unexpected… particularly since designers
now play new roles in companies and in society as a whole.
In addition to the functional and aesthetic aspects normally
attributed to designers, today it is recognised that they play
an increasingly central role. Acknowledged as being a factor
of society’s progress (even of social progress), designers no
longer work solely from a decorative perspective but provide
concrete answers to environmental, medical and social
problems. They are widening their scope of action and now
we can view without diffi culty at least 10 new ways of
understanding this profession, this vocation, because it is
very much one voice that we are following, that of the
Designer’s Day association asking the simple question
« Tell me ten ».
Finally, and in more pragmatic terms, 10 is the minimum
number of months which the public should be offered a Paris
design circuit which is in line with the public's expectations
and what has been achieved over the past ten years...
In fact, it is a great challenge which will be met by
the Association’s members between 9 and 14 June 2010
because, after all, ten years should be celebrated in six days
instead of in fi ve days, with an extra day already being their
very fi rst anniversary gift.

its design circuit on a Wednesday to offer its visitors 6 days

NEW IN 2010
New members
For the 2010 session, the Association is adding to its
numbers and is playing host to players with varied profi les
for whom contemporary design is a priority and who are
developing it in a number of complementary fi elds :
Arte International, a Belgian company offering
innovative and luxurious wall coverings, a partner to major
international architects, in a Parisian showroom inaugurated
in January 2010, a new address to be shared.
L’Éclaireur, a genuine institution in Paris, a venue
for new discoveries and the avant-garde for more than thirty
years, with its showroom on Rue de Sévigné, will hold many
surprises.
Roche Bobois, after a much remarked incursion into
the Off in 2009, the brand is now laying claim to its position
as a designer and showing that contemporary creation can
be interpreted on a large scale.
Tai Ping Carpets, a designer of contemporary carpets,
will be participating with the most cutting edge names in
the world of design.
The Designer’s Days / Design-in-the-City Competition
In 2010, and for the very fi rst time, Designer’s Days will
offer its visitors a competition in partnership with Design-
in-the-City / Milan and IESA (Institut Supérieur des Arts).
Each visitor will be invited to complete a questionnaire on
the subject of the scenographies and have the opportunity
to enter a draw to win a weekend break in Milan during the
sister Designer’s Days event, Design-in-the-City which will
be held in October 2010. Students from IESA, who will be
present at each showroom, will provide coordination for this
competition. Also, in October in Milan, visitors to the Italian
circuit will be invited to participate in a competition to win a
weekend’s visit to Paris during Designer’s Days 2011.
Launch of an iPhone Application in partnership with
Artravel for Designer’s Days 2010
In 2009, Artravel offered a new application for iPhone and
iTouch, a Paris design guide which selected showrooms,
hotels, concept stores, restaurants etc.
For the launch of Designer’s Days 2010, Artravel will be
offering an update of this application. Designer’s Days visitors
and iPhone and iTouch users will be able to display all
the points of the circuit through images, an address and
the description of the scenography. Find venues in a fl ash
and discover a new way to visit the circuit… Designer’s Days
is becoming interactive.
Paris Première, a partner of Designer’s Days
This year, for the very fi rst time, Paris Première is proud to be
joining forces with Designer’s Days as well as contributing to
promoting the very best in design and contemporary creation
to the general public. For the occasion, Paris Première will
devise a special circuit with design addresses which mirror
its own image.
Paris Première is one of the main channels in the French
audiovisual landscape and one which continues to maintain
its individuality : culture and glamour with a bubbly and
daring approach. This year again, its focus is centred on
lifestyle, events, exhibitions, theatre, live shows, behind-the-
scenes, etc.
Watch Paris Première unencrypted on Freeview (Channel 31)
every day from 6.35 pm to 8.35 pm.

BÕBATH “ Bath Fiction ”
by Agape (Benedini Associati)
and design school students
Designer’s Days…10 years already. What is the point of
anniversaries if not to provide heavenly gateways towards a
future to be invented ?
Women, men are bathing following time’s arrow.
What will these « blissful bathing » places be in 10 years time
or in 100 years time ?
Will our bodies reinvent themselves in the mirrors of the future ?
As a birthday gift for Designer’s Days, and in tribute to the
deep sense of Design written in the gestures, the eyes and
the desires of humans, B’bath is offering a unique experience.
B’bath and its partners « are inventing the future »…
Come and enjoy a « B’bath experience ».

ARTE “ Colour Paper Dresses ”
by Isabelle de Borchgrave
The 2010 edition of Designer’s Days is staging the return
to Paris of two Belgian names from the world of paper and
creation, Arte International and Isabelle de Borchgrave.
Based in Paris, at a showroom nestled in the 6th arrondissement,
since January 2010, Arte International offers contemporary
and avant-garde collections of wall coverings, which
demonstrate that innovation can blend with refi nement to
produce total harmony. Isabelle de Borchgrave is a reference
in the world of working with paper, whether it is for costumes,
clothing or ephemeral objects. She has now focused her
passion on developing collections of paper dresses and
decors. A true-life magician, she does not hesitate to conjure
up the worlds of Poiret, Worth, Chanel, Dior or Mariano
Fortuny by recreating magnifi cent paper clothes which show
her vision of the world of fashion, using paper to help her
to create the illusion of lace, or of period brocade. Isabelle
enjoys playing tricks on the eye, convincing you that illusion
speaks louder than reality. She has found an inexhaustible
source of inspiration with Arte International’s collections
and it is with incrustations of coloured sand, crushed silk
and tree bark that, in June, a series of 10 unusual costumes
will take shape.

BACCARAT “ A Garden under the Moon ”
by Yann Kersalé
Yann Kersalé is a famous lighting designer. Among the
many architectural projects on which he has worked, he has
participated in many projects by his partner and friend Jean
Nouvel, such as Lyons Opera and the Quai Branly Museum.
A genuine light scenographer, for Baccarat, he will be staging
an astonishing garden of the future in which light and shade
will reveal the secrets of crystal through a circuit around 10
poetic and mysterious fl owerbeds.

BOFFI BAINS “ Liquid Mirror ”
by Philippe Di Méo
It is only natural that water flows at Boffi Bains, therefore it
is only natural that it should provide its source of inspiration.
Boffi Bains has created a new Art of Bathing which controls
water through technical expertise and aesthetic demands.
Miroir Liquide is a metamorphosis of liquid in video,
a materialisation of fluid on an electronic wall. With plays
on light reflections and surface effects, this installation
employs a combination of techniques to create a dreamlike
and festive way of occupying space. The 10th anniversary of
Designer’s Days provides the opportunity to celebrate water
as an eternal living matter and to prove that Boffi Bains has
learned how to harness the power of water to make it an
item of domestic pleasure.

BOFFI PARIS“ Architect’s Recipes ”
by Cédric Martineaud
Boffi is celebrating architect designed kitchens. A partner
of some of the most beautiful interior design projects of
the past twenty years – 2 times 10 years – Boffi Paris wants
to pay tribute to 10 talented architects with whom Philippe
Gilman has worked for many years. Whether it is for cookery
enthusiasts or for luxury homes, each project is unique.
A temple to culinary creativity, the kitchen is also a centre of
life shared by all : family, friends, relations. Everybody drops
in for a coffee, a quick lunch, a chat, an end of evening drink
or a family dinner... The kitchen is the heart of the house
which follows its pace of life and refl ects its image. It praises
the host and the guests. Boffi Paris has entrusted the
scenographer Cédric Martineaud with the job of reproducing
the creative approach of these 10 architects through a fun
circuit which shows the close link between the brand, the
architect and the customer. See for yourself how « to cook up
the kitchen ».
BULTHAUP-ƒTOILE“ Ten (Tell) me your apron ”
by Stéphanie Balini et Théophile Besson
Stéphanie Balini and Théophile Besson take Bulthaup Etoile
aprons and transform them into daring creations. Devoted
to the values of « savoir-faire », for the event, they have brought
together the top quality partners who contribute to their
realisations: pleating, goffering, leather casing, etc. The novel
« 10 » collection thus designed is presented in the universe
of black Bulthaup Etoile aprons. The two designers sign
the scenography with their own respective personal touch
and provide it with a timeless vision.
Stéphanie Balini created for Baccarat the « Damoiselles »
glasses collection and the « Buche » and « Torches » lamps
for Christian Liaigre. Théophile Besson produced the luxury
sparkling water bottle for Cristal de Couzan commissioned
by the Paris Museums of Arts and Crafts for trophies made
with precious stones.
CASSINA“ Delicious celebration ”
by Patrick Jouin
In the same way as a birthday for a 10-year old child -
Happy Birthday Designer’s Days -, Patrick Jouin has dreamed
up 10 Icons from the Cassina collection which take the form
of cakes. In partnership with the Pastry Chef from the Plaza
Athénée, Christophe Michalak, Patrick Jouin has designed
furniture to be devoured in one gulp out of pure greed. Is it
not a child’s dream from the fairytale Hansel & Gretel by the
Brothers Grimm ? Or taking the dining room quite literally ?
Or from a more Freudian viewpoint, eating the Father (masters
of design so dear to Cassina)! In all events, undoubtedly,
it will be for the sole pleasure of the eyes and the taste buds.
Deliciously yours !
CHRISTOFLE“ 10 years already ”
by Olivia Putman
The personality and success of Vertigo ring confi rmed that
we needed to abandon defi nitively all preconceived ideas
about the opposition between the modern and the traditional
and inform as many people as possible !
This ring has covered with audacity and ingenuity all the
existing forms from the Maison Christofl e’s repertoire and
we even invented new ones when needed. This year, it is our
pleasure to celebrate the ten years of this great adventure -
incredible how quickly the time passes - and we are already
dreaming of the lines our future collaborations will take.
« When I am asked which of my mother Andrée’s projects
I prefer, I always talk about Vertigo which, for me, is completely
symptomatic of her unique talent, the link between a certain
nostalgia and a futuristic vision of the years to come. »

and Elitis has not wanted to forget its own. In 2010, Elitis is
writing a new chapter, creating a new elegance fi lled with
energy and joy, the same as a list of wishes for this new year,

LAFAYETTEMAISON“ Tell me ten windows ”
by Constance Guisset
« Ten window displays to present ten key objects which have
marked the past 10 years », this is the summary of the
specifications given to the designer Constance Guisset who
has been invited by Lafayette Maison to design a scenography
for its participation in Designer’s Days 2010.
A graduate of ESSEC in 1998, Science Po in 2001 and ENSCI
in 2007, Constance Guisset has had an original career.
In parallel to her studies, she has been involved in several
unusual projects, participating in the campaign of a Japanese
politician in Japan, coordinating a display case at the
Museum of Decorative Arts, making a film about clockwork
toys « Les rêves de Toto et Tata » (2006), winning the Grand
Prix du Design of the City of Paris in 2007, winning two Aides
à Projet VIA in 2009, being part of the final selection for the
Prix Emile Hermès with her Funambule cutlery collection,
winning the Prix du Public at the Design Parade 03 at Villa
Noailles, and also spending six years acting as « administrator »
for Ronan et Erwan Bouroullec’s studio.
On the strength of this experience, Constance Guisset
approaches design from various angles: in 2009, she produced
the scenography at the Théâtre des Abbesses for
Le Funambule played by Angelin Preljocaj, and, currently,
she is preparing the stage set for Laurent Garnier’s 2010
tour. In parallel, she is developing a design for objects :
to follow a collection of metal furniture for the Ankara French
Institute, a « Vertigo » lamp produced by Petite Friture and
the development of the « Tri3 » dustbin.

L«ƒCLAIREURESPACE SƒVIGNƒ
The very fi rst to combine design and fashion, the very fi rst
to break the codes of traditional distribution, Armand and
Martine Hadida gave new meaning to the all too often igno-
red profession of « retailing ». At L’Éclaireur, the customer
becomes the guest in a story in which the creators are the
actors. In 2009, a new challenge was accepted. By entrusting
the realisation of their new Espace Sévigné to Arne Quinze,
the avant-garde visionary Belgian designer, L’Éclaireur
went even further. A truly interactive installation, this space
leads each visitor into the heart of a novel experience.
And, it is in the secret of this place’s astonishing architecture
that the answers are to be found. Reality and illusion rub
shoulders in a never-ending game. At night time, the venue
sometimes becomes a gallery, an experimental space lit by
video displays, including the astonishing Book Room by the
duo Electronic Shadow. « This isn’t a store, it’s an experience.
This project is the realisation of a dream, of an intention
fed by emotions, stories, memories, the same as a fairytale
in which, I hope, each individual will be able to fi nd a small
piece of himself ». (Arne Quinze).
And for the very fi rst time, it provides a sensorial stage on
the Designer’s Days circuit to celebrate together L’Eclaireur’s
three decades of discovery.

MAXALTO ET SILVERA /B&B ITALIA“ Ten steps away ”
by Marie Christine Dorner
and Philippe Boisselier
Ten years later, just ten steps away, SILVERA is inaugurating
a space devoted entirely to its parent company : B&B Italia.
Linked by a common spirit, Maxalto and B&B Italia Paris will
be celebrating Designer’s Days 2010 together.
The architect and designer, Philippe Boisselier, who, in 2004,
created the Knock on Wood sensorial space for Maxalto,
will, this time, be working for B&B Italia Paris. Having just
completed the presentation for the ten years of the Now !
design à vivre trade fair, he is well placed to praise to the
forward-looking spirit embodied by B&B Italia. Ten steps
away, Marie Christine Dorner, his former student at Camondo,
will be working for Maxalto. With the common reference
point being the value of excellence, these contributions will
juxtapose two visions of the contemporary domestic landscape,
two approaches which embody luxury made in Italy.

MOLTENI & C DADA“ In Power 10 ”
by Arik Levy
« In power 10 » comprises 10 « Quakes » tables designed by
Arik Levy for Molteni&C, all reinterpreted around the
symbolic number « 10 » or one of its multiples.
This scenography offers a very personal approach to the
theme by inviting each visitor to give free rein to his
imagination and take advantage of a unique experience
leading to fascination.
Arik Levy was born in Tel Aviv (Israel) in 1963. He studied
industrial design at the Art Centre College of Design, La Tour
de Peilz (Switzerland). He teaches at ENSCI-Les Ateliers de
Paris and has led many design workshops at several
European establishments. In parallel, he has created stage
sets for dance performances for the Grand Théâtre in
Geneva for the Netherlands Dance Theatre, the Finnish
National Ballet and the BatSheva Dance Centre in Israel.
In 1997, he joined forces with Pippo Lionni to create the

PIANOS PLEYEL“ Une note suspendue ”
by Hilton McConnico
Ten…tell me ten… Ten years that Designer’s Days has
existed and ten years since Pianos Pleyel has revived its
avant-garde tradition and brought in creators and,
more specifi cally designers, in order to give a contemporary
look to its timeless instruments. Ten…tell me ten…
Ten months is the time needed to make a Pleyel piano ;
Ten…tell me ten… Design, 10 pianos by creators to reinvent
the shapes, matter and colours of this major instrument :
Daniel Hézan, Thibault Desombre, Pleyel design studio,
Marco Del Re, Aki Kuroda, Jean Cortot, Andrée Putman,
Jacques-Emile Rulhmann. Ten…tell me ten… To celebrate
Designer’s Days tenth anniversary, Pianos Pleyel is
revealing… a tenth designer piano by Hilton McConnico
which draws a « Parallel » between music and design.
« For me, music is the greatest art form. In front of a painting
or a sculpture, you rarely hear music. But when you hear a
concert, each instrument’s note conjures up an image. Then,
portamento, imagination comes to ideas. Therefore, I started
the Pleyel piano adventure with this small idea which has led
to ‘ Parallèle ’ : the score is made up of staves, of parallel lines
which are waiting to receive the notes. Against all expectations,
patience is required. Cross out. For Designer's Days, I have
created a presentation in which the vertical comes up
against the horizontal, in which the background blends into
the shape, in which matt intensifi es gloss. This ensemble
is streamlined by the essential touch of turquoise which
resides in the soul of the instrument. » (Hilton McConnico)

POLTRONA FRAU“ The Termite Hills of Africa ”
by François Azambourg
An « explorer of matter » (Libération, Anne-Marie Fèvre,
23/01/09), François Azambourg likes matter regardless of
whether it is rich or modest. His work is a constant search
for using limited means. Refusing to be restricted to the sole
aesthetic of drawing, he prefers to conduct his research on
the precision of matter. Fascinated by the African continent,
he is attracted by the gigantic architecture of termite hills.
But, above all, it is the matter which fascinates him.
The clay processed by the termites is incredibly fi ne and also
is enriched naturally with additives which help to prevent
shrinkage. Often used for pottery, François Azambourg wants
to tame this matter and turn it into a material which is just
as noble as leather, wood or steel and design an « armchair »
symbolising African thrones. In partnership with a local team
he will locate an abandoned termite hill and cross swords
with this unusual matter. Poltrona Frau has given François
Azambourg carte blanche. Drawn by this iconoclastic project,
the Italian company wants to celebrate creation in its purest
form for this tenth anniversary.

ROCHE BOBOIS“ The Ten Commandments of Design ”
by Elizabeth Leriche
The status of the designer is evolving. Now recognised as
being a player at the heart of industrial and commercial
activity, on the border between art-craft and engineering,
now essential to the creation of added value and to
the success of the products which he helps to develop, the
designer must now tackle more general problems which
commit him in the same way as the other players with whom
he works, editors, manufacturers and distributors. What
are his responsibilities ? Roche Bobois has defi ned the 10
Commandments which constitute the rules of good practice
for this discipline.
A presentation by Elizabeth Leriche will evoke the problems
of eco-design, creation, local industrial challenges and
services to users.
1. Thou shalt favour the use of renewable resources,
thou shalt respect our planet;
2. Thou shalt curse polluting manufacturing processes
and materials ;
3. Thou shalt assemble elements in accordance with
their nature and their interest;
4. Thou shalt plan for the recycling of material ;
5. Thou shalt ensure compliance with social rules in
the factories;
6. Thou shalt not covet the creations of thy neighbours ;
thy soul will be the source of thy creation;
7. Thou shalt encourage the awakening of the senses and
of the intellect;
8. Thou shalt meet the needs of thy neighbour, thy servant,
his ox and his donkey;
9. Thou shalt adapt to specifi c requests with the use of crafts ;
10. Thou shalt spurn vanity and futility.

SAAZS“ DIxVISIONs of light ”
by 10 artists
10 inspired viewpoints about the relationship between
individuals and their environment. 10 enlightened views
about contemporary design, the fruit of a combined
approach which gives rise to an unforgettable experience
and emotion.
Through these 10 works, SAAZS invites us to defi ne a new
reality, a summary of technological innovation, of ecological
sensitivity and of poetry. A new chapter in the history
of design is being opened thanks to a renewed method
of creation which combines innovative design and sensorial
research. Saazs, a designer of furniture and concepts for
interior decoration, is inventing a new vision of design which
combines innovation and poetry.
Saazs creates indoor furniture (tables, console tables,
shelves) which integrates the fi rst intelligent glass developed
by Quantum Glass (a new brand of the Saint-Gobain group).
At A Glass House, a unique experimental and discovery
centre devoted to Quantum Glass active glasses, Saazs
is confi rming the unique and transversal dimensions of
its approach to design and is committing itself to a series
of exchanges with artists and video makers in the same vein
as the freedom of expression given to the designers produced
by Saazs institute. Since its launch, Saazs’ creations
have received many prizes and have been publicised widely
in the press.

SAINT-LOUIS“ Tomorrow ”
by Hilton McConnico
Crystal awakens the senses. The delicate touch of the rim
of a glass on the lips. A fi nger caressing a smooth and
rounded surface before encountering the diamond-sharp
tips. A shimmering light, a glow which make the eyes sparkle.
The light and transparency of a matter which stimulates
the eye. The tinkle of two glasses coming into contact and
the resounding echo which follows. Crystal is also a world
of sensation.
It is inevitable that the future of crystal will involve these
emotions. Ten years of future prospects, ten years which will
be vital for the history of crystal. Solutions to be found and
opportunities to be seized.
The future of crystal is a ray of light which will feed on the
roots of matter in order to diffract into lines of research
where new energy will be revealed.

SILTEC“ Una storia italiana… Zanotta
or 10 reasons to love design ”
Commedia dell’arte, fi lm directors and cinema, Italian
culture has produced many beautiful creations, among
them design, which is the one which we will be recounting :
a story of creators, of their encounter with an industrial
group, a scenario placed under the sign of freedom.
Stories in which objects adapt to the human body,
the inanimate joins the living. Stories in which each of us
makes our own mark on the object of creation. A story
of imagination, technology, savoir-faire: that of an Italian
dream. A story with its roots in Nova Milanese. Ten reasons
to love design based on a scenario written by designers
and Zanotta.

TAI PING“ D-Form ”
by Patrick Norguet
In 2010, Tai Ping and Patrick Norguet are joining forces to
celebrate the 10 years of Designers Days. 10 years ago…
In 10 years time… But today, what is the state of play for
carpets and design ? The combination of a resolutely
traditional craft and a resolutely avant-garde technology
has contributed to the faultless reputation of Tai Ping’s
savoir-faire, a savoir-faire which the brand offers to Patrick
Norguet for the creation of the D-Form carpets. The product
of a distorting view of picture archives from the 18th
and 19th centuries in order to teach our eyes to understand
a contemporary carpets, a vector of innovation.

VERONESE“ Disproportionate ”
by Chantal Thomass
The legendary Veronese fi rm is inviting Madame Chantal
Thomass and her nimble fi ngers to design several models
of lamps and mirrors for the tenth edition of Designer’s Days.
Already familiar with the practice of design for the fi rm,
with some of her creations decorating her own environment,
Chantal Thomass is somewhat mischievously working the
famous lights and mirrors in Murano crystal : they are
becoming impish with amusing, mischievous and lively
bows and ribbons. Designed in the boudoir style dear to the
creator, these spectacular models will delight with their
refi nement and elegance...

DYSON
Inventing and reinventing what already exists when it does
not work or does not work well; make technology accessible ;
promote design–its value, its benefi ts ; these are James
Dyson’s hobbyhorses. The story we know started with the
bagless vaccum cleaner, continued with the high-speed and
hygienic hairdryer and is now being enriched with
the bladeless fan. This year, it is the latter item which Dyson
wants to promote, in particular through a conference
on the origins of the product, from its design to production,
as well as practical design workshops in order to invite
the general public, high school pupils and younger children
to take the hand of a Dyson designer and, why not even
devise, create and attempt to invent the objects of the future.
Finally, there is also an exhibition paying tribute to
the forward-looking work realised by children on the theme
« the house of the future ». This work, coordinated by
the Pompidou Centre, our partner for four years on
the « Explorer le Quotidien » (« Explore Daily Life ») cycle, will
highlight the extent to which children, regardless of how
young they are, are able to invent the future with great
intuition and foresight.

This project will initiate productions which will be added to
over time as opportunities arise and following encounters
with designers.
- Products with balanced manufacturing costs thanks to
upstream research on manufacturing procedures : artisanal,
semi-industrial or industrial with materials which are easy
to implement and requiring little investment.
- Environmentally-friendly products made mainly in France.
- Products with high added creative value.
- « All-out » creations, free of constraints in terms of material
and free of any obstacles.

generous, inventive, qualitative, innovative, fun.
Everybody should be able to fi nd what they are looking for :

ENSCILES ATELIERSHidden Carbon,
in partnership with l’EPFL+ECAL Lab
The new project by EPFL+ECAL Lab rings out like a manifesto :
to go beyond the high tech aspect of new materials so as
to explore the potential of their unique nature. Two major
design schools, ENSCI-Les Ateliers in Paris and ECAL in
Switzerland have accepted this challenge and have focused
on an icon of technological materials, carbon. The search
has led to a presentation of six proposals emblematic of this
refl ection in which carbon abandons its usual black mantle
to become blown glass, sound and light. Hidden Carbon aims
to rediscover the relevance of this material by developing
object typologies and novel uses based on the material’s
specifi c properties. The projects arising from this work are
free of the visual references related to carbon allowing the
user to approach directly the sense and meaning coming
from the objects. Hidden Carbon is an exhibition of the six
best projects : fi rstly in their fi nal form, which defi es the
technological references in order to meet the initial challenge,
and then highlights a few key points in their design so as to
allow visitors to also understand this material which is so
present in today’s world, but, nevertheless, which is so little
known. This project follows on from Sunny Memories, the
design work based on a new generation of solar cells presented
last year at Designers Days with ENSCI, ECAL, the RCA
(Royal College of Art, London) and the CCA (California College
of the Arts, San Francisco). It refl ects the new dialogue
between design and engineering proposed by EPFL+ECAL
Lab, part of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne.

ƒCOLE NATIONALE SUPƒRIEURE DES ARTS DƒCORATIFSRound table “ Creation in the new
luxury strategies ”
In the framework of Designer’s Days, the École Nationale
Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (ENSAD) is organising a
round table on Friday 11 June at 6 pm on the theme :
« Creation in the new luxury strategies ». In the context of
globalisation, major luxury brands are looking to reorient
their strategy. Think global, act local : creators have to think
on an international level but also take account of regional
cultural heritage, local savoir-faire and dying ancient crafts.
Creation does not produce a standard international style
but feeds on cultural values and on authenticity. This round
table will bring together creators, representatives of luxury
brands, experts, etc.
Round table open to the public on prior reservation.

Euro-Shelter-Vincent Poujardieu is returning this year with
a new aluminium honeycomb contemporary furniture

almost six metres long. An astonishing feat of lightness and
strength with a natural cork fi nish that offers innovation,
originality and aestheticism.

by Charlotte Soyer
Gallery S. Bensimon is offering a journey into contemporary
creation based on the powerful and federative theme of
Nature. The search for the quality of gestures, matter and
forms, the relationship between the object and the individual
are the main themes for a journey into the senses.
In this soothing new space open to the world, Serge Bensimon
reveals his notebooks of inspirations, fi lled with emotion
and feeling which he shares with joy. An accumulator and
a collector of art and design, the founder of Autour du
Monde, loyal to his philosophy of exchanges and encounters,
devotes this place to the dialogue between the creations.
It is a laboratory of ideas for objects, a breeding ground for
talent in the fi elds of design and contemporary art,
a sensitive and balanced place on the border between all
the inspirations at the heart of the new European movements.
A suite of emotions driven by curiosity and enthusiasm.

a designer of random laying, the inventor of Microtuft.
The company is innovating constantly and in 1994 set up
its Mission Zero, an undertaking to have no negative impact

LES ARTS DƒCORATIFSNormal Studio, Basic design
With the exhibition by the creator duo, Normal Studio,
Les Arts Décoratifs is completing a cycle which started with
Konstantin Grcic and Jasper Morrison, devoted to the
representatives of present-day minimalism. It is the fi rst
time that the two designers will have exhibited their work on
such a large-scale. Normal Studio comprises two creators-
Jean-François Dingjian and Eloi Chafaï – who, together,
form Normal Studio, an industrial creation agency. Attempting
to understand the pair’s work implies laying aside all
unnecessary gestures, anything which is superfl uous and
any decorative feature in order to preserve only the very
marrow of basic design. For them, « Normal Studio’s DNA lies
precisely in this ability to avoid starting with a blank sheet in
order to develop and create, but to start with manufacturing
processes ». They are looking constantly to get back to basics.
The observation of the manufacturing process provides
them with the key to initiating the approach which leads to
the creation. « For us, the question is to fi nd meaning in
the shapes which arise directly from industrial processes »,
they explain. This process is the essential condition
for generating a design « which is not a gratuitous gesture,
which is not a design based on style”. The paradigm of this
method of working is its collaboration with Tolix since 2008,
a French company founded in 1907 specialising in the
production of galvanised metal furniture. They have given
this company a new lease of life by re-employing its
savoir-faire. This collaboration was rewarded in 2009 by the
Designer’s Days Prize-Express Style-Maison Française for
the Enterprise-Designer tandem. This has been followed by
collaborations with Tectona, Roset, Eno and even the Tools
gallery. Finding them again on the Designer’s Days circuit
means, once again, celebrating the prize awarded in 2009
and hailing their creative approach.

INSTITUT SUƒDOISSigvard Bernadotte, Inspiratör -
entreprenör - designdirektör
On the occasion of the national bicentenary of the accession
to the Swedish throne of the French Bernadotte family, the
Institut Suédois is exhibiting the work of Sigvard Bernadotte
(1907-2002), a pioneer in industrial design in his country.
His company Berna dotte & Bjørn Industridesign A/S, created
jointly (in 1950) and jointly managed with the Danish
company Acton Bjørn, represented a new way of understanding
the procedure involved in creating an industrial object.
As a creator himself, he involved all the members of his team
in the work and advocated the participation of the industrial
designer at an earlier stage in the manufacturing process
contrary to practices of that time. Their company became a
genuine school which produced a new generation of
designers in Denmark and Sweden. The exhibition will show
the Prince’s work, focused specifically on gold work, not to
mention the star objects produced by his company,
the logotypes, utensils, packaging, office machines and even
textiles and furniture. Also displayed are a few examples
of the creations of his nephew Carl Philip, the present-day
Prince of Sweden, a designer by profession. It is an exhibition
which could only be included in the Designer’s Days circuit
in 2010, accompanied by a textile design exhibition by the
« 10-Gruppen » collective recalling the key role which design
plays in Swedish culture.

NOW ! DESIGN Ë VIVRE Happy Birthday Now ! Design à Vivre
2000-2010, Now ! génération design !
A design mediator for the home, a business and image plat-
form, a research and development laboratory, a talent fi nder,
an emotion transmitter, an information generator, Now !
is design at the end of the concept. A unique event in Europe
which, for the past 10 years, has brought together
manufacturers and young creators, it is a transversal
approach by means of which designers intervene at the
cutting-edge of creation in a process which places human
beings at the heart of projects. 10 years of an extraordinary
dynamic for a novel and international concept which builds
its success on the perfect synergy with Maison et Objet,
the international trade fair for household fashion in Paris,
the Capital of Creation. In order to celebrate this anniversary,
Now ! design à vivre, is looking to the future and getting
some perspective, the initial vocation of this rendezvous.
An entire generation is honoured through the nomination of
10 designers*, 10 talents some of them already well-known
and others recently graduated, 10 creators with unique
careers who are symbols of their time. And, without a doubt,
all of whom will be driving forces for design during the next
decade. This ‘generation 2020’ presented by Now ! design à
vivre will be adjusted by Philippe Starck, the creator of
Maison & Objet 2010, who, 10 years after his fi rst nomination,
is, in some respects, passing on the fl ame to this new
generation by asking them the question « What is missing ? ».
Expect to fi nd some of the answers to this question on the
Designer’s Days circuit.

OBERFLEX AT LIEU DU DESIGN“ Very Wood ! ”
by Cakedesign
Created by the Ile-de-France region, the Lieu du Design
(Place of Design) was set up in the heart of Paris in October
2009 in a magnifi cent industrial building from the middle
of the 19th century, a place of history and remembrance
of workers from the textile and woodwork industries and,
still today, from the leather, tanning and saddlery trade
and, recently, and with such talent, Pierre Paulin and Roger
Talon. A centre for the promotion of industrial design and
eco-design at the service of sustainable development, the
Lieu brings together different professionals from this sector
and, throughout the year, opens the doors of its exhibition
area, documentation centre and material library, materiO.
For this new edition of Designer’s Days, the Lieu du Design
has given free rein to Oberfl ex. Internationally recognised
for its wood panels of high technical quality and great aesthetic
diversity, Oberfl ex, a loyal partner of the circuit since 2005,
is presenting its latest collections with an astonishing
scenography developed by Cakedesign: a walk through
the woods which, once again, underlines the manufacturer’s
creative and innovative approach.
LES ATELIERSDE PARIS“ Dystopia ”
The Ateliers de Paris is a service of the Municipal Authorities
of Paris devoted to the promotion of creation companies in
the sector of fashion and design arts and crafts. Every year,
at their residence, they host project initiators for a renewable
period of six months. Since November 2009, seven new
residents have moved into the Ateliers in order to continue
to explore their creative universes. We have entrusted them
with the celebration of the ten years of Designer’s Days for
which they will present: « Dystopie : dix–topies ? ».
The residents of the Ateliers de Paris are questioning their
practices and are offering a prospective refl ection that
questions our relationship to the body and the object during
the coming decade. Starting from their own fi eld of research
and activity, the residents will propose ten objects or
processes which will be as many queries offered to visitors,
and will ensure the scenography of their creations : Aurore

SAMSONITE
In 2006, we were already a partner of Designer’s Days at the
Maison & Objet trade fair. In 2010, we are participating fully
in this great adventure as a partner.
The 10 years of Designer’s Days refl ect the path covered
over the past 10 years by Samsonite in terms of design.
In 2000, for the very fi rst time, we called upon the services
of a world famous designer, Philippe Starck, to develop
a range of luggage. Since then, Mark Newson, Matthew
Williamson and Alexander McQueen have lent their talent
to the development of unique ranges in the world of luggage.
Therefore, it is only natural that we want to mark these past
10 years of design innovation with Designer’s Days, as well
as the brand’s 100th anniversary, in order, together, to look
to the future. For Samsonite, the future will be centred more
than ever under the sign of a close association between
Design and New Technologies. We invite you to join us on the
circuit so that we may continue to amaze you.
SICIS“ The 10 offerings ”
by Elizabeth Garouste
« Charmed by the wealth of glossy, translucent and matt
materials, the infi nite range of colours, and outstanding
savoir-faire, I wanted to create for Sicis a dreamlike walk,
a magical circuit. An invitation to lose oneself in a world
of shapes, of rippling and astonishing walls, in the search
for the sacred tree, the symbolic tree, the bearer of 10
offerings, leading to the passage through of emotional
mirrors, fragmented by 1,000 pieces of mosaic.
An enlightened circuit in which it is possible to remain
stationary, rest and dream in 10 possible ways. »

SPECIMEN ƒDITIONS CHEZ TERRES NUAGES“ Prospectives 010 ”
by Guillaume Delvigne
Invited to exhibit at the Terres & Nuages showroom, the young
contemporary furniture company « Specimen » is presenting
its fi rst collection : Prospectives O10. It offers a cutting-edge
selection of productions on the border between work of art
and industrial product available in limited series. Specimen’s
approach consists of offering a generation of emerging
designers the opportunity to overcome constraints related to
industrial production and, thus, realise more personal, poetic
and extraordinary projects. The exhibition brings together the
works of several designers : Constance Guisset, Sylvain Rieu
Piquet, Guillaume Delvigne, Pierre Lota, Rozenn Couturier and
Olivier acronym O10 refers to the puerperium, to childbirth.
The exhibition gives birth to samples, models representative of
a new species… specimens.

LIéGES HPK“ Cork dressed-up to the nines ”
by Marie-Christine Dorner
and “ Tatami ”
by Vincent Poujardieu
Based in the heart of Albret in Lot-et-Garonne,
HPK, a specialist in cork for the high technology
manufacturing and aerospace and defence
industries, has chosen to accompany two
designers in the development of two projects
which will promote cork as a material,
its many advantages and its applications.
The cork produced from cork oak is a completely
natural and renewable material and its
production and processing are managed
meaning that it complies with environmental
requirements and standards.
Thus, Marie-Christine Dorner will present
« Le liège sur son 31 », a family of cork pedes-
tal objects for the table which provide both
heat insulation and a festive touch to everyday
tableware.
Vincent Poujardieu will present « Tatami », a
kaleidoscope of playful cork shapes with an
infi nite number of combinations which invite
you to take a seat.
ALESSI“ Emotional typology ”
by matali crasset
Alessi makes its great return to the Designer's
Days circuit for the 10th anniversary of
the Paris event. The Shop Museum Alessi, a
hybrid space somewhere between a museum
and a showroom, designed by Marti Guixé
and inaugurated in 2008 in the Quartier Saint-
Germain, will celebrate the ‘emotional typology’
with a promenade of the emotions staged
by matali crasset. In this space, the ‘emotional
typology’ reveals the emotional networks
created over the years around Alessi products.
The space becomes a representation
of the values which underlie the projects.
The occupation of the space becomes a
revelatory fi lter, a second fi eld of interpretation
which injects energy into the entire place.

like the future, since 1863, Novoceram
has expressed the essence of ceramic designer
fashion by interpreting French style through
its selection of ceramic tiles for all purposes.
The product offering ranges from technical
products for large-scale interior and exterior
architectural projects, to charming collections
for interior design, to exclusive collections of
precious « wallpapers » in porcelain stoneware
for unforgettable walls which form genuine
works of art. Each Novoceram project is
designed under the Charme Céramique name,
one of the label’s authentic brands, which

TOOLS GALERIE“ F-light series /
Standards & icons ”
by David Enon
A change of decade for Designer's Days which
coincides with the end of incandescent light
bulbs and the move to energy-saving light
bulbs... a change which has weighed heavily
on light designers and architects who felt that
light bulbs were essential to projects.
David Enon offers a rereading at standard
lamps, famous lamps by well-known
designers, and also creates some new items.
He uses the energy-saving light bulb as a
starting point for redesigning these lamps.
The light bulb will redefi ne-refi ne-the design
of iconic lamps which will gain in simplicity,
in economy... for a new lease of life. Ten lamps
at the peak of their form, radical and poetic,
created for the occasion in ten copies, will
be exhibited from 9 June to 24 July 2010 at
ToolsGalerie, 119 rue Vieille du Temple, Paris 3e.
