Quintessential Barrington spoke with the three student designers who expressed their gratitude for the opportunities, and excellent training and support generously provided by Kathy Rezny and her De-sign Team.

Each year, the International Fur Federation and Vogue Talent part-ner on a global student fur design competition—the IFF ReMix Inter-national Student Fur Design Competition. In the United States, the Fur Information Council of America (FICA) solicits applications and fur de-sign sketches from students attending or recently graduated from design schools throughout the country. With 100s of applications submitted, the FICA ReMix Committee selects three students to represent the U.S.A. in the global competition.

These three talented students will then partner with a furrier to have their sketch realized into a fur garment. Pelts, linings, trimmings, shop time, and instruction are all gifted to the students (they also keep the fin-ished garment). Once their garment is completed, photographs are taken and a new application is submitted for the global competition held in Milan, Italy, in early spring. From across the globe, 10–12 students will receive a paid trip to Milan where their garment will be included in a run-way fashion show attended by fashion industry designers, manufacturers, buyers, and media (including “Vogue” magazine judges).

Kathy Rezny and her staff have played a key role in the contest. “In my role as chairperson of the Fur Information Council of America’s ReMix Committee, I have had the pleasure of working with some very creative and ambitious student fur designers from across the United States. Many of these students attend design schools in the Chicagoland area allowing them access to the York Furrier workshop and Design Team. Working with the students is truly inspiring and I am happy to share their suc-cesses,” Rezny said. “In the past several decades, the U.S. has sent many students onto the global competition, and I’m thrilled that quite a few that York Furrier has worked with were global winners or runners-up in the competition.”
