DESIGN CRAFTS BA (Hons)

Design Crafts BA (Hons) at DMU will help you discover your artistic style and prepare you for a range of careers in the creative industries, including designing and making. You will have opportunities to design and make objects using traditional and emerging technologies, reflecting the changes in digital manufacturing and realisation technologies. You will work with and manipulate a variety of materials, including glass, plaster, paper, clay, fine metals, plastics, resin, foam, wood, veneers and textiles. You will also have the opportunity to work with industry through live projects, placements and competitions.

Bespoke objects can be produced for domestic, interior spaces, exterior spaces, worn on the body, and can be hand-held or large-scale sculptural pieces. This reflects the range of careers accessible within the field of design crafts including craftsperson, jeweller, ceramicist, textile artist, designer-maker, glass artist, designer, researcher, consultant, curator, buyer, stylist and educator. Flexible design craft practices are also common as part of a traditional studio craft practice, which include working collaboratively and with a range of clients: community, corporate, public and private.

Graduates often combine employed and self-employed careers, while some students go on to work in design studios with well-respected names such as Sainsbury’s, John Lewis and Next.

INTERIOR DESIGN BA (Hons)

Interior Design BA (Hons) at DMU develops your ability to manipulate and divide volume and space within interior environments, while building your awareness of community, social and global issues. The course covers all aspects of interior architecture and spatial design with an emphasis on individual development and creativity. On this course you will develop your own individual design identity, whilst also collaborating with industry experts on live projects. You will look at how existing sites can be converted into new restaurants, bars, spiritual centres or living spaces. This will challenge you to think about the way people interact with different spaces and environments, and the ways that architecture can be re-used within the industry.

Based in the award-winning Vijay Patel building, you will benefit from a range of facilities including CAD studios, modelscope, drawing studios, video visualization equipment and prototype workshops. You will graduate with a wide range of design skills and an enquiring creative mind-set that will equip you for diverse opportunities within design/architectural companies, working in retail, hospitality and leisure, residential and workplace sectors. Graduates have gone on to work for design practices of all different sizes including Creative Ideas Ltd, Blueprint and ISI.

PRODUCT AND FURNITURE DESIGN BA (Hons)

Product and Furniture Design BA (Hons) at DMU gives you the ability to think creatively across the boundaries of product and furniture design. We will encourage you to challenge conventional ideas by the development of innovative solutions and technically and aesthetically sophisticated products and furniture that meet the requirements of the modern consumer.You will work within a professionally energetic active department where staff have extensive design industry experience. Visiting lecturers include Steve Mosley (Mosley&), Prospect IP and designers and model-makers from Redline Studios.

Using the workshop facilities available in the purpose built Vijay Patel Building, you will have the opportunity to learn from expert technicians across a range of materials including wood, metal and plastics including the latest in additive manufacturing and rapid prototyping equipment.

This course can lead to an exciting career in companies such as Jaguar Land Rover, Sixteen3, Vax, Redd Europe and Mamas & Papas.

The skills you learn will be relevant for design consultancies and freelance design, or for progressing into marketing, design management, teaching and postgraduate research.

The course has achieved accreditation from the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED), with graduates being able to apply for Engineering Council registration.

PRODUCT DESIGN BA (Hons)

Product Design BA (Hons) at DMU is a course that consistently produces innovative product designers. It is ideally suited to students with a strong art or design background, who would like to focus on the technical and visual design aspects of design for industry.You will have the opportunity to study a range of product design briefs, and develop a detailed understanding of materials and manufacturing processes while being taught advanced drawing and presentation techniques. The course considers the sustainability of conventional product design, developing socially conscious products that reduce waste and conserve energy. Your in depth-knowledge of materials across all areas will help you to make products relating to transport, sports equipment, toys and more.

You will develop your creative thinking while creating innovative products in a vibrant design environment; this course can lead to exciting careers in companies such as Phillips, Nokia, The Alloy, Lego and Hozelock.

PRODUCT DESIGN BSc (Hons)

Product Design BSc (Hons) at DMU offers a unique blend of Product Design and Engineering modules, enabling you to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding needed for the design of sophisticated products for industrial manufacture.You will gain a detailed understanding of engineering design and manufacturing processes, which is then applied and practised through project work to meet commercial, technological, manufacturing and human requirements.

The study and application of the latest CAD, CAM and rapid prototyping techniques forms a major element of the course.

You will become equipped for a wide range of careers in design consultancy, technical consultancy, manufacturing and engineering, and graduates are now working for companies such as Jaguar Land Rover, Dyson, BMW and Warner Bros. Studios.

The creative industries require imaginative graduates who can develop new ideas and products. Students use our state-of-the-art workshops, labs and studios to experiment and test in the same way they will in industry, while the open and transparent spaces in the building encourage collaboration between disciplines. Louis FarnsworthProduct Design BA (Hons) RSA Student Design Award

Louis won the RSA Student Design Award for his range of safety kitchen knives designed to protect users from cuts and lacerations. They aim to boost confidence among visually impaired people and users of diverse ages within the kitchen environment.

British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) challengeInterior DesignBA (Hons)

Our Interior Design students fought off tough competition from universities across the country to win first prize for their new HQ for a youth radio station.

Joshua Holden-BrownProduct Design BA (Hons)

Joshua achieved the highest grade on his final project of a Registered Product Designer accredited programme, by the Institution of Engineering Designer (IED).

Nicholas Mulliner Product Design BSc (Hons)

Nicholas was recognised for his final project by the Institution of Engineering Designer (IED), for outstanding performance on an Incorporated Engineer accredited programme.

New DesignersOur students have recently had the opportunity to exhibit at New Designers in London. For over 30 years, New Designers has been bringing together the brightest and most radical new creative minds under one roof to launch the next generation of thinkers, makers and disruptors onto the UK design scene. Its long-standing reputation continually attracts a prestigious design-conscious audience of over 18,000 professionals, public media and education.

Art and Design Degree ShowOur Art and Design Degree Show celebrates the talent and innovative work of our final year art and design students. The exhibition showcases exciting creations by the next generation of artists and designers and attracts thousands of visitors including potential employers.

Interior Educators ShowInterior Design students have the opportunity to showcase at the Interior Educators Show (formally known as Free Range). The Interior Educators Show aims to celebrate talent and provide a platform for UK artists beyond education, and an opportunity to connect to a London audience.

Morgan StocktonDesign Crafts BA (Hons)

Design Crafts graduate, Morgan, had her work featured at the London Glassblowing Gallery – a leading studio for contemporary glass art - and at New Designers ‘One Year In’, one of the most important design events for emerging talent. Her work is inspired by the industrial architecture in her hometown of Birmingham, she creates her sculptures by blowing hot glass into and onto steel wire moulds, resulting in unique pieces.
