COURSE OBJECTIVESThis course is intended to fill the gap in knowledge that developed because steel-framed buildings are so seldom encountered in South Africa. The knowledge gap relates not only to the big issues such as composite construction and how to decide on the framing lay-out, but also to the practical issues such as accommodating underfloor services and other non-structural elements. And then there are those additional and sometimes unexpected things such as floor vibrations and fire resistance.

The course aims in the first instance to provide structural engineers with the necessary knowledge and insight to design structures for office buildings, parking structures and other buildings of several storeys, consisting of steel structures with concrete floors. The second objective is to equip all members of the professional and construction teams to handle such projects effectively, from concept to completion.

WHO WILL BENEFIT FROM THE COURSE • Structural engineers and technologists, preferably with some experience in the design of buildings should benefit from the whole course• Other people who are involved in multi-story buildings – architects, building contractors, steelwork contractors, quantity surveyors and

mechanical engineers – should benefit at least from parts of the course

SPEAKER

• Practical issues such as pouring concrete and levelling of floor s, support of facades, accommodating underfloor services, making openings in slabs or beams, deck details around columns, etc.

• Quality assurance

• Seismic design

• Fire resistance

• Floor vibrations

• Interface with non-structural aspects

COURSE CONTENTS

Loads, modelling and analysis

The process of designing and constructing a steel-framed building

Structural systems and lay-outs, including the lateral support system

Composite Construction

The course is intended to be very practical and to deal with all the issues of importance when designing and building steel-framed buildings. The theory of core subjects like composite construction will be covered in some detail, while subjects like fire resistance or floor vibrations can onlly be dealt with superficially in the time available. References and additional information will be provided where needed.
