    A point of no return

Time-estimates of when the point of noreturn will be reached for the global system

of humanity have shrunk from the end of thecentury to mid-century, then to the nexttwenty years, and recently to the next five to

    twenty years. Ervin Laszlo 2010

    DESIGN ME A PLANET

    AN INTEGRAL OPEN INNOVATION ECOSYSTEM

No matter who you are, most of the smartest people work for someone else is known as Joys Lawin the high-tech industry. Attributed to Sun Microsystems cofounder Bill Joy, this law emphasizesthe essential knowledge problem that faces many enterprises today, that is, that in any given sphereof activity most of the pertinent knowledge will reside outside the boundaries of any oneorganization, and the central challenge for those charged with the innovation mission is to find ways

to access that knowledge. The causal explanation of Joys Law is provided in the seminal work ofeconomists Friedrich Hayek and Eric von Hippel on the distributed and sticky nature of knowledgeand innovation.

Hayek, in 1945, arguing for the importance of the market economy, emphasized that at the macrolevel knowledge is unevenly distributed in society, and that centralized models for economic planningand coordination are prone to failure due to an inability to aggregate this distributed knowledge.

Thirty years later, micro-level studies by von Hippel began to suggest that in many industries users

were the originators of most novel innovations. Users dominant role in originating innovationsreflects the fact that knowledge is not only distributed but also sticky, that is, relatively difficult andextremely costly to move between locations, thus shifting the locus of innovation to where it is thestickiest.

    DESIGN ME A PLANET

    CONTEXT 1

We are living in a world that is becoming more complex and where change is rapid.

In this world, our basic assumptions are likely to change. An action, a process, a culturewhich could have been successful in the past can become inadequate before it canadapt. It is therefore a question of survival to think, explore and anticipate alternative

    long term futures.

On the other hand, in a world which is complex and fast-changing, a limited action canhave a big impact, the well-known butterfly effect.

There is good news and bad news. Good news because we are all empowered to

participate in a better future for the world and the next generation. The bad news isthat we are also empowered to cause major damage to our planet.

Complexity has shown the ability to produce emergence of new concepts, new paths, new opportunities. We will live in a world more and more unknown where differentlywill be at the same time our wealth and our challenge.

    CONTEXT 2

In this context, if you do not think about the long-term future, you are not able to makewise decisions in the short term. Obvious, down-to-earth and pragmatic decisions mayresult in big mistakes because the world has changed or will change in an unanticipatedway.

This is a challenge, which is already present, and is becoming more relevant for individuals, companies, states, and the planet as a whole. That is why our way of planning and creatingstrategy must fundamentally change. We do not have to build our vision only as anextrapolation of the present. We can build our vision from a deep understanding andawareness of alternative scenarios for, and possible discontinuities in, the future.

The research program for exploring long-term futures is being designed as a unique placein the world, where an interdisciplinary, international and cross-organisational teaminteracts on a continuing, networked basis to explore a diversity of possible scenarios forthe long-term future and their likely implications for local strategy on the short term.

    OBJECTIVES

Our priorities are to: Create a rich, diverse set of possible scenarios for the long-term

future. Study the more robust scenarios and the critical factors of success

within them for an individual, a company, a nation, and the world. Experience a venue allowing a rich exchange of views and creativity

within an international, multidisciplinary, networked organisation. Establish a rich communication network regarding important issues

of the future, to improve the awareness of concerned people andorganisations.

Be a resource centre for organisations and institutions dedicated tostudying the future, while providing analytical tools and strategiesfor shorter-term decision-making in a rapidly changing world.

    1. Cultivating Diversity and Difference

Understand that a complex world needs diversityin ways of thinking.

The future will emerge from the complexity of

our diversity. We cannot think of the futureoutside of this diversity. This is why we need tocultivate diversity, diversity of specialties, cultures, organisations.

Our research team is an answer to the need ofdiversity. We are coming from various differentcountries, fields of expertise and organisations.

    2. Modelling Alternative Future Scenarios

It is possible today to model thousands ofdifferent futures, based on variations in a setof assumptions. Using existing exploratory

modelling tools, we can provide instantvisualisation of the different possibilities in arich, multidimensional space.

Such visualisation is extraordinary helpful inbecoming aware of critical factors affectingthose futures.

    4. Managing the Process Holistically

The rational approach must be supported by a concernfor the affective process. A place must be left open forspiritual intuition and creative imagination.

    W

e support the fact that science, art and spiritualitycan bring in their different domains very importantinsights for understanding the future. But it is also away of life, a way to be open to the instant presence.

There is time and place in our work for moments ofrationality, emotional expression and inquiry aboutmeaning.

Club of BudapestFounded in 1993, the global Club of Budapest is an informal international association dedicated todeveloping a new way of thinking and a new ethics that will help resolve the social, political, economic, and ecological challenges of the 21st century. With its roster of internationally renowned members the Club initiates a dialogue between differentbelief systems and world views in order to co-create and develop effective strategies for responsible andsustainable action with a global focus. The idea of the Club of Budapest was developed in 1978 in adiscussion between Aurelio Peccei, founder and first president of the Club of Rome, and Ervin Laszlo, systems philosopher and also member of the Club of Rome at that time. They were convinced that the

enormous challenges to humanity can only be dealt with through the development of a cultural andcosmopolitan consciousness. Based on these ideas, the Club of Budapest was founded by Dr. Laszlo in1993.The founding city and namesake of the Club lies at the heart of Europe and is spread out over both banksof the River Danube. The successful merging of the two cities Buda and Pest is symbolized by the famousChain Bridge. It visualizes our ambition to build bridges between generations, disciplines and cultures. Therefore, it was selected as the logo and signet for the objectives of the Club. The main essence of theglobal efforts lies in the initiation of dialogue. Please read more on the website http://www.clubofbudapest.org/Since 2008 the operational platform of the Club of Budapest is the WorldShift Network, which wasestablished by Ervin Laszlo, Wolfgang Riehn and Johannes Heimrath in 2007 as an internationalfoundation. It has its seat in Germany. In future the WorldShift Network will be responsible for theinternational projects of the Club as well as for the coordination of the National ClubsPlease read more on the website of theWorldShift Network.

About Integral University in Paris by Michel Nguyen The

So far, the Integral University ("Universit Intgrale" in French) in Paris refers to a cycle ofconferences organized by the French chapter of the Club of Budapest based on an idea putforward by Michel Saloff-Coste. It is not an institute as such, as it is still in its developing stages. The idea is to organize one-day seminars on various themes in cooperation with speakers, theoreticians as well as practitioners. The use of the word integral puts the emphasis not on theintegral movement, but on a common desire of being integral. With this aim in view, the systemic

and transdisciplinary approaches are also considered as part of the same quest for integrality.Over the past two years there have been height seminars; they dealt with the following themes:1) what the integral approach is; 2) how to integrate it into our lives and actions; 3) education; 4)the social, economic and ecological crisis; 5) sustainable development; 6) civilizations from thefuture and the future of civilizations; 7) eco-life, eco-cities and eco-villages; 8) Asian and WesternCivilizations. The seminars consist of presentations followed by questions, mini-workshops,exercises and musical interludes. The complete programs of the seminars, as well as videos, can

be found on the Integral University web site : www.universite-integrale.org/.

Planetary FuturesWe emphasize the notion of Planetary Futures in the light of the increasingchallenges that we face in relation to environmental, psycho-social and politico-economic domains across the planet. From a number of philosophical andtheoretical perspectives it is being suggested that we are now in a Planetary Era(see Edgar Morin: Homeland Earth, 1999).Ecologists are calling for a planet-wideresponse to global warming and rapid climate change; evolution of consciousnesstheorists refer to the emergence of planetary consciousness (see Jennifer Gidley,

2008); leading-edge political scientists point to the rise of a global imaginary (seeManfred Steger, 2008); and innovative educational researchers stress the need toglobalise the research imagination (see Jane Kenway and Joannah Fahey, 2008).It is vital that futures pedagogy is informed of these emerging perspectives andincorporate them into their projects and programs. We particularly welcomecontributions from futures researchers, practitioners and educators who think andwork beyond nationalistic boundaries and take a planetary approach to futures

pedagogy. For more information on the above-mentioned theories andapproaches please contact the Project Coordinator, Dr Jennifer Gidley.http://wfsf.merlot.org/projects/index.html
