Flexo Process• Spot colors can be used as single color (screened or solid)

• Spot colors may not be mixed with any other spot color or process colors.

The printing press setup is configured to support process color printing:

Four print units are prepared for process color printing (CMYK). The anilox

screen ruling combined with the CLC substrate allows high quality printing

(according to specification). In addition to the four process colors (CMYK) spot

colors can be used to reproduce colors outside of the CMYK gamut.

Flexo printing platesThe key component of the plate is the raised image area carrying the image to

be printed. Unlike printing plates used in other printing methods, flexo plates

are resilient and displaceable.

The plates are in most cases attached

to the plate cylinder with double-sided

adhesive tape called “sticky back” which

may be of a solid vinyl or cushion type.

Print unit and inking systemThe heart of the flexographic printing process is the inking system.

The most commonly used is the chambered doctor blade ink metering system.

From front to back, the system consists of an enclosed doctor blade chamber,

anilox roll, plate cylinder and impression cylinder. The most important part of

the inking system is the anilox roll. The surface of every anilox roll is laser

engraved with a pattern of tiny cells, so small that they can only be seen under

magnification. The size and number of these cells determine how much ink will

be delivered to the image areas of the plate, and ultimately to the substrate.

FlexographyFlexo printing was developed in the 20th century. The image area is raised from

the printing plate, making flexo a relief printing process.

Print QualityFlexo line and flexo process is using the same printing method, flexography.

These are simply 2 different quality levels of printing.

Flexo Line• All colors used are considered Spot Colors.

If CMYK are used they are treated as spot colors and NOT as process colors.

• Maximum 2 colors can be overprinted (only one of them may be screened).

Flexo line printing demands high ink coverage, therefore requiring anilox rolls

with high ink volume and low screen ruling. This combination gives high dot

gain and limits the screen ruling, impacting the printing result. Using process

colors to create photographic images is not possible in flexo line.

Select ProcessSelect utilises Hybrid screening, the benefits of this include the support of dots

that can fade from 4.3% down to 0.4%, the Hybrid screening uses a circular dot

structure which randomly removes dots from the gradation in a uniformed

manner.

This allows for greater stability when printing and clean highlights with edges

that simply out perform Standard Flexographic results.

SelectSelect is the edge of Flexography technology offering another level of design

freedom. Ability to mix special and process colours combined together with

smooth fading possibilities, takes Select to the premium level of printing among

the Tetra Pak portfolio.

This product offers satisfactory appeal comparing to other technologies such as

Offset & Roto. Its capabilities enhance customer branding and strengthen

communication to consumers.

Key Benefits of Select• Ability to mix process and spot colours• Advantage of a larger colour Gamut compared to standard flexography• Excellent Quality of Select technology enables more freedom with designs• Greater Density enabling more bold and vibrant premium designs• Photo realism within images• Improved minimum tolerances of first printed dot, font size and line width

Mix of process and spot colour

Here we can see an example of Standard Flexo in comparison to a Select result. We can see that the highlights are much cleaner and brighter, also the shadow fades smoothly away by utilising the Select hybrid screen.

The example shows Standard Flexo were the dot size of light tones needs to be stopped due to technically constraints, limiting the reproduction of highlights and fadings. In Select, hybrid screening technology is used to create a smoother transition with a result comparable to photographic image.

UncoatedPaperboardThe rather coarse surface of the uncoated paperboard gives a high level of

ink absorption and does not allow for high print resolution (screen ruling

lines per inch, lpi). The minimum printed dot will be rather large, and

clearly visible to the naked eye. This makes uncoated paperboard unsuitable

for photographic printing.

Uncoated paperboard is used with flexo line.

CoatedPaperboardPapers are coated by special machines in the paper mill to improve the

surface gloss, lustre, whiteness and printability. The ink absorbtion is reduced

compaired with uncoated paper hence the dot gain is less, this will allow

photographic printing.

Coated paperboard is used in flexo process, flexo line and select.

MetallisedPaperboardMetallised board is a laminate of paperboard and a metallic film, the film is

applied in Tetra Pak production before printing, it can be used to give the

product a metallic appearance. The colour of ink printed on board will look

quite different when printed on metallic film., therefore a white ink is required.

White is printed first and other inks on top of it. Areas of the design where the

metallic effect is meant to shine through the ink should be clearly marked.

Normally chosen for premium products.

Metallised paperboard is used with flexo process.

HomeHome PaperboardPaperboard SelectionSelection

Tetra Pak InksComponentsImportant components of ink are the binder and the pigment. The binder

acts as the carrier of the pigment and the pigment acts as the colorant.

Direct sunlight and high humidity can have an erosive effect on pigments,

causing the colour to become pale. Fluorescence inks are particularly sensitive

to this, which is one of the reasons why Fluorescence ink is not used in the

packaging industry.

Legal and HealthThe food industry and its suppliers (e.g. Tetra Pak) are subject to legal

restrictions regarding hygiene and health. Before Tetra Pak can use any ink, the

complete ink recipe has to be approved in accordance with national and

international statutory specifications.

Pigments containing heavy metals or pigments based on fanal chemistry

(e.g. Pantone Reflex Blue) are examples of pigments that cannot be used within

Tetra Pak production.

Pantone colours

Many of the colours in the Pantone guide are created from pigments that are

not allowed in the food carton industry. This particularly applies when the

packaging material is in direct contact with the contents. Tetra Pak substitutes

those pigments with approved pigments, resulting in colours that deviate from

the Pantone reference. Another factor impacting the match to a Pantone

reference is that Tetra Pak inks are designed with the required resistance to

sunlight and high humidity in mind. These are properties that are essential in a

package that may be standing exposed to sunlight and high humidity,

sometimes for weeks. The Pantone pigment selection is not optimised for

resistance to sunlight and high humidity

Environmental friendlyThe absolute majority of the inks used by Tetra Pak are water based.

Water based inks are considered to be more environmental friendly than other

types of inks.

KeylinesKeylines (die cuts) for all Tetra Pak package types and volumes are available

in digital form. Keylines are not dependent on paperboard or print method.

They are best used in Adobe Illustrator where the keyline presentation benefits

from the Adobe Illustrator layer function.

A keyline is a drawing showing:

• Package dimensions

• Design area

• Area free from design

• Opening areas

Main users of keylines are:

• Tetra Pak Customer advertising agencies

• Tetra Pak Design and Prepress Department

• Repro and plate suppliers

Note! The keyline must not be edited. On opening the digital keyline in Adobe

Illustrator you will notice that it’s built up in four layers; 1. Keyline, 2. Keyline notes,

3. Mask and 4. Background (you simply drag them into place if they are not in that

order). We recommend that you build up your design, starting with the Background

layer and that you keep Background and your additional layers located below the

Mask and Keyline layers. Most of the package area on a Tetra Pak package is available

for designing purpose. Only some areas where the package is folded and sealed are

not available. The Mask layer already masks off areas that are not available for design,

text and symbols. We suggest that you delete the Keyline notes layer prior to final

saving of the file. In the base of the Keyline, print marks, register marks etc. and also the

Tetra Pak logotype will be added in the prepress operation.

BackmatchingTetra Pak packages are divided by a longitudinal seal, most commonly placed

on the rear of the package. The match between the left and right part where

they are joined together needs your attention.

Backmatching principle:

Avoid putting small text in the overlap area due to mismatch possibilities.

Continuous DesignTetra Fino® and Tetra Classic® continuous design require specific attention.

When you design for these packages you will need to repeat the design

elements more than once on your delivered AW keyline. This is necessary in

order to always ensure a full design element on each individual package

after filling. For more information please contact your Tetra Pak Market Company.

Preflight & Design Submission

11

HomeHome KeylinesKeylines GlossaryGlossary

PreflightPreflighting, a term borrowed from the checklist procedures used by pilots

before take off, is a way of ensuring that your digital files will output correctly.

Preflightling is away to discover problems before they occur so working hours,

equipment and materials are not wasted. The process discovers incomplete or

missing digital files, improper image resolution and fonts before sending it

further in the design production chain.

Preflighting Tetra Pak designsPreflighting the design and its elements is in your own interest. If you follow our

instructions the design process will run smoothly and the number of

unexpected problems will be minimised.

There are a few main Preflighting issues that we wish to draw your attention to:

• The correct keyline must be applied to the artwork, if the keyline is wrong

then potentially the whole job could be wrong.

• You should always use an object-oriented software such as Adobe Illustrator

to produce the main design document. Never produce the entire design in

a pixel based software such as Adobe Photoshop.

• Photographic images should be layered (PSD format) and always be linked to

the main document (e.g. Illustrator) and never embedded.

• If your design contains photographic images, the required resolution is

300ppi to ensure the optimum quality in print. Please note if you scale

images inside Illustrator it will effect the resolution.

300ppi placed at 200% will result in a 150ppi image.

• You should always supply all the fonts used in the design. If you are using

Post-Script type one fonts, make sure that you send both the printer font and screen

fonts for each typeface used. Remember to also supply fonts used in EPS files.

• Please include a PDF of the design and a document with instructions regarding

typefaces used, objects and colours (in accordance with the PMS guide).

Preflighting toolsYou can preflight manually checking all the parameters listed or you can use

preflighting software that will check the document and collect the required files

for you. Tetra Pak is developing tools and recommendations for preflighting.

Please contact your Market Company for the latest information.

Design submissionSupply the assignment in a neat logical order, with all relevant elements in their respective

folders. The main document, together with linked images, should be put in one folder.

Fonts used for the design are to be put in another folder. Please contact your market

company for information on the type of media on which they would like to receive your

design (most common is DVD), many also offer the possibility to submit them design files

through FTP or other means of digital transfer. If you use FTP please compress the files into

one archive (.zip and .sit) before sending it as this is more secure and will take less time.

In the last decades, the world of design creation have changed dramatically.

Speed to market is more crucial than ever before. To support you we bring you

e-asyDesign! Our aim is to enable you, as our customer, to be even more

competitive in an ever increasing market place. e-asyDesign functionality includes:

• Designs available on-line, 24 / 7 / 365

• Search and preview designs.

• Track and trace the progress, anytime, anywhere

• Order new designs and modifications, in real-time

• Upload and download files

• Communication tools involving all stakeholders

• Compare design versions and verify changes

• Online approval

To create an e-asyDesign portal please contact your Tetra Pak representative.

Software ApplicationsThe preffered software applications are Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop

Adobe Illustrator (to produce the main design document).

Adobe Photoshop (images should be layered PSD format).

We also accept Freehand and Corel Draw files but please be aware that there

may be issues and delays in the process.

Freehand (to produce the main design document).

Corel Draw (to produce the main design document).

PDF filesFor reprographic quality control we request an approved artwork PDF

used for content and positional comparison of the final repro file. We also

request a PDF created to the Tetra Pak specifications, this will be used

within our automated Preflight system.

Please click here for the Tetra Pak PDF specification.

Colour TargetA colour target will also be required, at the reprographic stage images are

retouched and tailored for the print process. A customer signed colour

target is vital at this stage.

Glossary

12

HomeHome SubmissionSubmission GlossaryGlossary

Anilox rollAn engraved ink-metering roll used in flexo presses to provide a controlled film of

ink to the printing plates that print the substrate. The ink film is affected by the

number of cells per linear inch and volume of the individual cells in the engraving.

Aseptic packagingAseptic packaging means that the product is rapidly heated and chilled by ultra

high temperature treatment, after which it is packaged under sterile conditions

in sterilised packages. The heat treatment is performed in a couple of seconds

to ensure that the product retains its quality. Aseptic packaging keeps the

product fresh for a long time without refrigeration.

BitA binary digit, the smallest information entity. It is expressed as1or 0, meaning

on or off, yes or no, positive or negative, something or nothing.

BitmapA computerized image consisting of dots. Images are ‘‘mapped’’ directly from

corresponding bits in memory, whereby each dot is represented by a binary

digit (bit) that is ‘‘on’’ (1) or ‘‘off’’ (0).

Chambered doctor bladeOn a flexographic press, a cartridge designed to supply ink to the anilox roll in

an enclosed area. Ink is pumped into and circulated through the cartridge that

is positioned on the anilox roll. Two thin strips of metal or polyethylene (doctor

blades) are in direct contact with the anilox roll. One of the blades contains the

ink within the cartridge; the other blade contains and meters the ink from the

non-cell areas of the anilox. When using a dual doctor ink chamber, the fountain

roll can be eliminated.

Coated paperboardPapers are coated to improve surface gloss, lustre, whiteness and printability.

The coatings consist of natural pigments, a binder, and various process materials.

The procedure is carried out on special coating machines in the paper mill.

Colour gamutThe range of colours that can be reproduced using a certain process. For

example, the colour gamut of an RGB monitor is much broader than that of

CMYK inks on paper.

Contour lineA line around design elements can appear as an effect of necessary trapping

(spread and choke). In such cases this has a secondary colour effect. As an

alternative, a line in a single colour can be applied around the design

element. The thickness of this contour line should be at least twice the trap width.

DotgainAn unavoidable increase in the size of halftone dots as they pass through the

stages of platemaking and printing. Dotgain varies according to the

characteristics of the press, ink, and substrate used. If dotgain is not accounted

for during the creating of colour separations and proofs, unexpected colour

shifts or loss of detail will occur on the press.

EPSEncapsulated PostScript. A standard file format for a drawing, image or

complete page layout, allowing it to be placed into other documents. It is used

to transfer PostScript image information from one program to another. EPS files

normally include a low resolution screen preview.

Flexo LineFlexo line, as the name indicates, is used for line printing

(i.e. solid areas of colour or gradients of individual colours).

Flexo ProcessIn flexo process the use of process inks (Cyan,Magenta,Yellow and Black) give

the possibility to print photographic images.

FlexographyA printing process that uses rubber or photopolymer plates and fast-drying inks

to print on paper or other substrates.

FontIn electronic publishing, the data files that supply the graphic information used

to create certain type style on the screen and for output.

Grey levelsDiscrete tonal steps in a continuous tone image, inherent to digital data.

Most continuous tone images contain 256 grey levels for each colour (8 bits).

Halftone screeningThe process of creating the halftone representation of continuous tone information.

This process breaks up the image into dots of different sizes. Electronic imaging

devices render each halftone dot as a cell containing a number of pixels,

forming a specific dot shape. The more pixels are turned on, the darker the dot

cell appears.

Hybrid ScreeningSelect uses hybrid screening technology combining AM screening in the

mid-tones and FM screening in the highlights (and optionally, in the shadows).

These screens can simply be applied to improve the smoothness of your

flexo highlights

LPILines Per Inch. The number of dots per linear inch in a halftone screen. Dot size

varies from very small highlight dots to large shadow dots. More lines per inch

increase resolution details and dotgain. Could also be specified as

Lines Per Centimetre.

Minimum printed dotThe smallest dot size a press is capable of reproducing, usually determined by

press characterization data.

MisregisterA condition where printing is out of or not in register.

PigmentsParticles that absorb and reflect light and appear coloured to our eyes.

The substance that gives ink its colour.

Page 14: Design Manual

GlossaryGlossary

PixelAn abbreviation for picture element. It is the smallest unit (cell, dot, square)

on a colour monitor display screen grid that can be displayed, stored or

addressed. An image is typically composed of a rectangular array of pixels.

PMSPantone Matching System. The brand name of a system for specifying colours.

Also referred to as special colours or spot colours.

PPIPixels Per Inch. A measure of the amount of scanned information to determine

how much image detail has been obtained. The finer the optics of the scanner,

the higher the scan resolution.

PreflightingThe process of checking electronic files to ensure that all elements are present

and have been properly constructed for optimal output.

Process coloursThe four colours (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) that are combined to print a

wide range of colours. When blended these reproduce only a small portion of

all colours found in nature, but they can reproduce the widest range with the

fewest inks when printing.

ProofingThe process of checking electronic files to ensure that all elements are present

and have been properly constructed for optimal output.

ResolutionThe measurement of fineness and detail in an image. The scale of resolution

depends on the device being measured. Scans are measured in pixels per inch

(ppi). Halftone screens in print are measured in lines per inch (lpi).

Sans serifLetter forms or type that does not contain the short cross line or spiral like

terminals at the ends of the stroke (e.g. Helvetica).

Screen rulingThe number of rows or lines of dots in a halftone image within a given distance,

normally stated in lines per inch (lpi) or lines per centimetre (lpc).

SerifThe short cross line or spiral like terminals at the end of the stroke of a

Roman style type face (e.g.Times).

TIFFTagged Image File Format. A file format for exchanging bitmapped images

(usually scans) between applications. It is supported by the majority of image

editing programs running on a variety of computer platforms.

TrappingThe process of creating overlaps between adjacent colours to account for press

misregistration, paper stretch and other variables.

There are two types of complementary traps (chokes and spreads).

Uncoated paperboardPaper without an additional protective coating; ‘‘untreated’’ paper.

VignettesAn image in which the background fades gradually away until it blends into the

unprinted substrate.

Flexo Line

Flexo line printing demands high ink coverage, therefore requiring anilox

rolls with high ink volume and low screen ruling. This combination gives

high dot gain and limits the screen ruling, impacting the printing result.

• All colors used are considered Spot Colors. If CMYK are used they are

treated as spot colors and NOT as process colors.

• Maximum 2 colors can be overprinted

(only one of them may be screened).

Uncoated paper has a high level of ink absorption, requiring a substantial

amount of ink to have a good solid coverage. The coarse nature of the

paper surface does not allow for high print resolution (screen ruling in lines

per inch, lpi) and solid print unevenness (mottling) may appear.

The minimum printed dot will be rather large, and clearly visible to

the naked eye.

You are advised to use the uncoated version of the PMS guide as a colour

reference for uncoated paperboard.

Tetra Rex®

Offset lithography is a planographic process, meaning that the printing

plate holds both the image and non-image areas on one flat surface or

plane. On most offset presses, image areas on the plate are chemically

treated to attract the lithographic paste ink, while a fountain solution or ink

repellent chemical treatment protects non-image areas from inking. From

the plate, the image is first transferred to a rubber blanket (hence the term

offset), and then to the substrate.

Four print units are prepared for process color printing (CMYK). The anilox

screen ruling allows high quality printing (according to specification).

In addition to the four process colors (CMYK) spot colors can be used to

reproduce colors outside of the CMYK gamut. Hybrid screening is used to

reduce the minimum dot whilst increasing the solid ink densities, this

allows us to bringe the gap from flexo to offset.

• Vignettes can run to zero.

• Solid areas are much more vivid.

Coated paperboard is coated by special machines in the paper mill

to improve the surface gloss, lustre, whiteness and printability. The ink

absorbtion is reduced compaired with uncoated paperboard hence the dot

gain is less.

You are advised to use the coated version of the PMS guide as a colour

reference for printing on coated paperboard.

Tetra Prisma®

Metallised board is a laminate of paperboard and a metallic film, the film is

applied in Tetra Pak production before printing, it can be used to give the

product a metallic appearance. The colour of ink printed on board will look

quite different when printed on metallic film., therefore a white ink is

required. White is printed first and other inks on top of it. Areas of the

design where the metallic effect is meant to shine through the ink should

be clearly marked.

Normally chosen for premium products.

You are advised to use the coated version of the PMS guide as a colour

reference for printing on metallised paperboard.

The rather coarse surface of the uncoated paperboard gives a high level of

ink absorption and does not allow for high print resolution (screen ruling

lines per inch, lpi). The minimum printed dot will be rather large, and clearly

visible to the naked eye.

You are advised to use the uncoated version of the PMS guide as a colour

reference for uncoated paperboard.

The printing press setup is configured to support process color printing:

Four print units are prepared for process color printing (CMYK). The anilox

screen ruling allows high quality printing (according to specification).

The rather coarse surface of the uncoated paperboard gives a high level of

ink absorption and does not allow for high print resolution (screen ruling

lines per inch, lpi). The minimum printed dot will be rather large, and clearly

visible to the naked eye.

You are advised to use the uncoated version of the PMS guide as a colour

reference for uncoated paperboard.

The Tetra Recart® paperboard has been formulated to withstand the

process of sterlisation. Due to the properties of the paperboard we ask

that you avoid using solid backgrounds in your design, especially in dark

colours as white spots will be evident in the printed result. Light textured

or mottled backgrounds are much better suited to the Tetra Recart® carton.

You are advised to use the coated version of the PMS guide as a colour

reference for printing on coated paperboard (no spot colours permitted).

The printing press setup is configured to support process color printing:

Four print units are prepared for process color printing (CMYK). The anilox

screen ruling allows high quality printing (according to specification).

In addition to the four process colors (CMYK) spot colors can be used to

reproduce colors outside of the CMYK gamut.

• Spot colors can be used as single color (screened or solid).

• Spot colors may not be mixed with any other spot color or process colors.

Line Thickness (mm)Positive lines less than the specified minimum will break up, whilst negative lines

less than the specified minimum will fill in.

The illustration below shows the effect of using below specification line

thicknesses, the example has a minimum positive line of 0.2mm and a minimum

negative line of 0.4mm.

Colours & InksProcess coloursDependant on the configuration of the printing press, process colours (cyan,

magenta, yellow and black) can be used to print photographic images.

Spot coloursA spot colour is a method of applying a premixed ink directly to the design.

Spot colours are usually identified by a colour system, such as the Pantone

Matching System (PMS). As paperboard effects the appearance of colour,

different guides are used, the coated version is used for printing on coated

paperboard, and the uncoated version for printing on uncoated paperboard.

Spot colours can used for different reasons:

• When there is a need for colour that cannot be achieved using CMYK.

• Production technical reasons.

• Repeatability of corporate colours

Pantone Matching System (PMS) guide used for colour reference

CMYK dots in different sizes (tones) create the illusion of continuous tones when printed together.

Flexo line• All colors used are considered Spot Colors. If CMYK are used they are

treated as spot colors and NOT as process colors.

• Maximum 2 colors can be overprinted (only one of them may be screened).

Due to the rather coarse substrate used when producing flexo line designs there are

some process limitations that need to be highlighted. Flexo line printing demands

high ink coverage, therefore requiring anilox rolls with high ink volume and low

screen ruling. This combination gives high dot gain, impacting the printing result.

Text Size (pt)Symbols like e.g. @ © ® or ™ can not be expected to follow the minimum text

size specification.

Things to consider with text are the font size, type of font used (serif or sans

serif) and whether it will be positive or negative print.

With the risk of misregister only text printed in one colour has been specified.

If more than one colour is used for text (positive or negative) the printed result

may become illegible. This is critical for text informing on Legal Requirements.

Sans serif fonts can be linked to the minimum line thickness since it mainly

consists of lines with similar line thickness.

Helvetica defined as 5pt. in Adobe Illustrator compared

to the minimum positive line thickness (red line).

In Illustrator the line definition ranges from 0.07mm

(on some places in the small letter) to 0.17mm

(capital letter). Values are in the digital file.

Serif fonts can also to some extent be linked to the minimum line thickness.

Times can be used to illustrate an example of serif fonts. The main difficulty

when printing serif fonts is the serif part of the letters (highlighted with blue

circle below). Serifs are very thin and easy to loose when printing small font

sizes. However it is not possible to demand a complete alignment with the

specified minimum line thickness. There is a need for a compromise when

specifying the minimum size for serif fonts.

Times defined as 6pt. in Adobe Illustrator compared

to the minimum positive line (red line). In Illustrator the

line definition ranges from 0.05mm (on some places in

the small letter) to 0.2mm (capital letter).

Values are in the digital file.

Fancy typefaces can cause problems being out of specification. The 3 tyfaces

below are all the same point size, the script style would result in elements being

much smaller than the Sans Serif font. Please check the thickness of the text as

above to ensure printability.

The top and bottom lines show the outer limits of the ascenders and

descenders in the fonts.

The main problem when printing text in more than one colour is misregister on

the printing press.

Gaps created by misregister have to be handled by applying a spread, choke or

contour line. Though there are no specifications to define this, text printed in

more than one colour needs to be much larger.

Serif fonts are compromised when spread or choked even small amounts.

Positive & negative text will grow or fill in due to the print impression.

This will be more noticable when using serif type faces.

Barcode Size (%)The following ISO definition applies to barcode usage:

“The barcode symbol must be produced in such a way as to be reliably

decoded at the point of use, if it is to fulfil its basic objective as a machine

readable data carrier” (ISO 15416:2000).

Truncation is required when the package is too small for a full sized code.

Truncation means that the original length is kept but the height of the lines are

being reduced. A maximum truncation of 40% can be applied on a barcode with

a magnification 100% or greater.

Direction of the code, the printed code can be defined as being fence or ladder.

Magnification is the overall size of a barcode. Please be aware that the print

direction of the code dictates the permitted magnification as specified in the spec.

The Barcode colour must offer a strong contrast to the board so the background will

reflect all the light and the bars reflect none. Wherever possible barcodes should

print black on a white background. For the bars use dark coloured inks towards the

blue end of the spectrum. Tetra Pak will verify the colour it prior to printing.

Designers should be aware of the space needed for the barcode as it will affect

the layout options. It is not necessary to supply the actual master barcode code,

only the barcode number is required. The barcode will be created in the Tetra

Pak prepress operation. The position and size of the barcode (including

magnification) should be clearly indicated in the design.

To be readable all types of barcodes must have Quiet Zones (i.e. an empty

space) before the first bar and after the last bar. The Quiet Zone is extremely

important and must be respected. Any print within the Quiet Zones can prevent

the barcode from being read. The size of the Quiet Zone varies depending on

the symbol size and type of barcode. As a rule it should be at least 10 times

wider then the smallest bar used or 3,0 mm, whichever is bigger. The use of the

light margin indicator or chevron (greater than symbol >) is recommended after

the human readable characters to protect the Quiet Zones.

Contour Line (mm)During the Pre-press stage work is carried out to avoid the effects of misregister

(spread and choke)*, in some cases this can produce in an ugly result. In such

cases as an alternative, a single colour line can be applied around the design

element. The thickness of this contour line should be at least twice the trap

width to cover the maximum possible gap.

*Trapping is a technique of overlapping colours to avoid white gaps created by

misregister between colours printed next to each other. Spreading or choking

graphic elements, depending on adjacent colours, creates colour traps.

When a lighter element appears against a darker background, the lighter colour

is spread into the darker colour, slightly increasing the size of the graphic

element. When a darker element appears against a lighter background, the

knockout is choked by slightly filling it with the lighter colour. Both methods

create a small overlap, called the trap width.

Trapping is applied in the last stages of the production, not by the designer.

Minimum Dot (%)Dotgain influences the minimum and maximum dot percentage that can be

printed in images and vignettes. The highlights will lack detail in areas below

the minimum printable dot and the shadows will become solid in areas above

the maximum printable dot. When creating Tetra Pak designs these values have

to be considered and understood to obtain the expected result.

Dotgain is the effect of halftone dots expanding throughout the different steps

in the production, from the digital original (production file) to the finished print.

Dotgain occurs, more or less, in all printing methods. Offset produces less

dotgain than, for example, flexography but the print pressure still aspects the

printed dot. The fact that flexo produces high dotgain makes it impossible to

print finer gradients of colour.

The key parameters contributing to dotgain are:

• Mechanical dotgain

• Optical (visual) dotgain

• Ink absorption into paper

Mechanical dotgain - Ink spreading around the halftone dot, caused by the

print pressure between printing media and substrate. The mechanical gain

differs between different printing methods, offset gives the least gain and flexo

the most.

Ink absorption into paper - depends on the surface quality of the paper.

Coated paper resists absorption while uncoated paper allows a great deal of

absorption resulting in greater dotgain. Uncoated and coated paperboard

below.

Optical (visual) dotgain - is caused by interaction between light and ink on

paper. When refracted light hits the paper around and on the dots, the light that

reflects back to the eye artificially increases the diameter of the dot, making it

appear larger than it really is. Another factor that increases optical dotgain is the

lamination layer used on Tetra Pak packaging material.

FreeHand (windows)IntroductionIn this document, you will be guided through the different Freehand MX PDF

export possibilities. The purpose of this document is to provide information on

how to create a PDF file using Freehand MX to guarantee maximum edit ability

after normalizing in Esko Software Suite 7.

Since the behavior in PDF is to flatten the layers in a Photoshop file the in

Freehand MX used Photoshop files should be delivered together with the PDF file.

The native Freehand MX PDF export possibilities are very limited however!

An alternative way to export a Freehand document to PDF is using Adobe Distiller.

This document does not describe Adobe Distiller settings. Please consult Adobe

Distiller documentation for an in depth explanation of the various settings.

• Select File > Export• Image compression select “none” to keep the original image resolution and

to avoid quality loss done by lossy compression (jpeg).

• Convert colors to CMYK. Freehand MX is only capable to export DeviceRGB

and DeviceCMYK!

• Compatibility Acrobat 4. The latest Adobe PDF version you can choose is

Acrobat 4. The exported PDF file will be PDF version 1.2

• Check “compress text and graphics” to obtain smaller Adobe PDF files.

Text and line art will be decompressed during the normalization process.

• Editable Text Format exports editable text with the PDF file. Select this option

only if you plan to edit the document in FreeHand or Illustrator; or to prevent

FreeHand text blocks from breaking into several text blocks during export. When

selected, this option produces a larger document. Check “embed fonts” to

TrueType and Type 1 fonts in the document.

• The PDF format supports RGB, grayscale, and monochrome bitmaps.

The PDF format supports most objects or formatting that can be created or placed

in FreeHand, with some exceptions.

You cannot export the following effects to PDF format, an alert message appears

when you export any incompatible objects:

• Custom and PostScript fills and strokes, arrowheads, and textured fills.

• Alpha channel transparency.

• EPS images. If an EPS image has a TIFF preview,

FreeHand exports the preview instead of the EPS file.

• Text effects.

• Overprinting applied to objects is turned off when exporting to PDF.

Illustrator (windows)IntroductionIn this document, you will be guided through the different Adobe Illustrator PDF

export possibilities. The purpose of this document is to provide information on

how to create a PDF file using Adobe Illustrator CS3 to guarantee maximum edit

ability after normalizing in Esko Software Suite 7. Since the behavior in PDF is to

flatten the layers in a Photoshop file the in Illustrator used Photoshop files should

be delivered together with the PDF file.

• Adobe PDF Preset please copy the attached settings file

(Tetra Pak PDF settings for Esko Software Suite 7 Win.joboptions) to

<C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data \Adobe\Adobe PDF\Settings>

and select the settings via the “Adobe PDF Preset” drop down list.

• Check Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities if you want to make sure the

Adobe PDF file preserves the Illustrator high-level information when it is

reopened in Illustrator. This option is of no use for the Esko normalization

process and needlessly increases the file size by a considerable amount.

• Check Create Acrobat Layers from Top-Level Layers to view Illustrator layer

information in Acrobat and to correctly process layer information when normalizing.

• Compression for Color Bitmap Images, Grayscale Bitmap Images and

Monochrome Bitmap Images should be set to “Do Not Downsample” to have

high resolution images in the Adobe PDF file.

• Note: make sure to select the “image” option when placing CT images to have

the high resolution image data in the PDF file!

• Check Compress Text and Line Art to obtain smaller Adobe PDF files. Text and

line art will be decompressed during the normalization process.

• Printer Marks and Bleed Information should not be set initially but can be

added at a later stage in the Esko Software Suite 7 workflow.

• Color Conversion should be set to “No Conversion”. If RGB is used in the job,

it will be converted to CMYK during the normalization process.

• Profile Inclusion Policy should be set to “Don’t Include Profiles”.

Color profiles should be used at a later stage in the workfow.

• Fonts the “Subset fonts when percent of characters used is less than” option

should be set to 0% to have the font fully embedded. When this option is set to

100%, all unused characters will not be embedded.

• Note: this is only valid for Type1 and TrueType fonts, OpenType fonts will be subset.

and select the settings via the “Adobe PDF Preset” drop down list.

Corel DrawIntroductionIn this document you will be guided through the different CorelDRAW PDF export

possibilities. Since the behavior in PDF is to flatten the layers in a Photoshop file,

the Photoshop files should be delivered together with the PDF file.

The purpose of this document is to provide information on how to create a PDF

file to guarantee maximum edit ability after normalizing in Esko Software Suite.

• Click File->Publish to PDF… in the CorelDRAW menu bar.

• General tab: Choose compatibility mode “Acrobat 8.0” to obtain Adobe

PDF 1.7 file. After applying all optimal settings, described in this document,

you can save those presets in the PDF preset section

• Objects tab: Choose ZIP compression for Bitmaps •  Uncheck Bitmap downsampling • Check Compress Text and Line Art to obtain smaller PDF files

• Text Encoding: ASCII • Check “embed fonts in document”

• Document tab: Uncheck Bookmarks • Choose Binary Encoding

• Prepress tab: Printer Marks and Bleed Information should not be set initially

but can be added at a later stage in the Esko Software Suite 7 workflow

• Security tab: No specific settings required.

• Advanced tab: Check “Preserve document overprints” to keep overprint

behavior • “Preserve halftone screen information”.. Makes sure you keep your

screening settings (rule and angle) as defined in the CorelDRAW document •

Uncheck “Maintian OPI links” to avoid OPI warnings during the normalization

step in Esko software.

• No issues tab: No specific settings needed. This is a preflight tool running on

the native CorelDRAW files. This is not influencing the creation of your PDF files.

FreeHand (mac)IntroductionIn this document, you will be guided through the different Freehand MX PDF

export possibilities.

In addition to the four process colors (CMYK) spot colors can be used to

reproduce colors outside of the CMYK gamut.

• Spot colors can be used as single color (screened or solid).

• Spot colors may not be mixed with any other spot color or process colors.
