description

The presentation describe one of the task given by the lecturer for the subject of Advanced Construction. Design intervention at medium scale somehow relate back with the thematic topic which is Synclastic Shell. The idea of semi-sphere-geodesic dome that cover the void area surrounded by the setting of formal classrooms in the Faculty of Architecture UiTM.

fspu amphitheater INTRODUCTION + PROJECT bRIEF

This type of design intervention consid-ered as medium scale at a moment. As one of pioneer faculty that exist at Uni-versiti’s, the amphitheater at the Fac-ulty of Architecture,Planning & Survey-ing has been well used over the years for numerous events. But the events were always at the mercy of the Malaysian weather. The main design task is to shel-ter the amphitheater from the inclem-ent hot, humid and wet weather which is persistent for twelve months of the year.

fspu amphitheaterbACKGROUND : THE SITE

The site is a void area which is located next to the open courtyard. With horizontal layers of studios and class-rooms surround the void space, it gives a sense of more than double volume height. Open up to the bright sky, is a good choice to receive natural light as to transmitted directly into the site. Malaysia is a region with hot humid climate and this is one of the issue that allow for an intervention.

A simple term and keyword that we use in our design intervention at this faculty is ‘the hanging’. It is a combination of boths object and human. Part of human figure which is hand have ‘base’ and also fingers is an important components that linked together through the inner structure; the bones. We take that as to generate the de-sign concept for this proposed shelter. An adaptation of how a hand with five fingers can create ‘vertical pillars’ to support an object. An experimental session that we gone through is by using sphere ball as an object also represent as load with ‘ver-tical pillars’ used as to squeeze that ball.

fspu amphitheaterSTRUCTURAL SYSTEM

THE SYSTEM Synclastic shell, space truss and also cable stayed structure is keyword for the types of structures that we used in this design proposal. By mixing up this three types of structures, then we considered one by one of structure components. Here, with more specifi-cally, we try to come out with struc-ture components such as geodesic dome, mast, space truss and also la-mella construction.

From the bottom part, we use rein-forced concrete as stump. With five(5) stumps positioned and located in di-agonal form of pentagon layout, on top of stump surface is a vertical mast which was connected and jointed to the stump. That stump base bolted to-gether with the mast as to tighten up the mast standing while other func-tion to transfer load into ground.

Another things that have in this struc-tural system is by the utilization of steel cable. Primary cable is one of the functional cables that connect directly between the mast and the dome. Then guy cable needs as to absorb horizon-tal component of thrust and transfer-ring the force to the foundation.

The dome structure, we try to ap-ply synclastic shell with more detail through the implication of geodesic dome. By using lamella steel construc-tion, helps in creating dome structure which created through the combina-tion of a series of equilateral trian-gles.

STRUCTURAL PRINCIPLE From the top part, geodesic dome constructed with lamella in steel is a surface structure. The load distributed uniformly through the small members of lamella and this load will received by the ring truss. This ring truss is a bit offset from the dome’s diameter and supported by triangular truss which connected to the vertical mast.

That ring truss with specific depth received the load from the top of the dome and distribute horizontally through the triangular truss towards the mast. Then the vertical mast helps in transfering the dome’s load by con-necting the primary cable at a top of mast head through one of the dome’s steel connectors.

Another cable which known as guy ca-ble used to connect the head of a mast to the boom before reach the anchor-age that bolted at ground level. This cable used as its purpose to absorb the horizontal thrust and transferring the force to the foundation. High tensile steel rod is a material used to transfer that load to the base.

Environmental section

fspu amphitheaterENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATION

IMAGECross section to represent the relationship between the structure and natural elements.

Our geodesic dome projected out with higher than roof level need to respond to the local climate. By making ETFE (Ethyl Tetra Fluoro Ethylene) as a skin material that wrap up the hemi-spher-ical dome, it is a best chosen material that we use in this type of design in-tervention.

Our bulky dome that cover almost 97% of void space at faculty’s amphitheater doesn’t restrict and limit the amount of daylight to come in into the area. This ETFE which have good translu-cency and light transmission qualities in visible and UV ranges more suitable to use at this dome.

There is a gap around the dome which allow for transaction of hot and cool air to circulate in proper way. An ex-isting building have a well cross ven-tilation which help in cooling the void space, and that is the reason why we need that gap as to allow that process of circulating air can continue.

fspu amphitheater CONCLUSION

Sustainable is one of the major issue that respond to the green building. This medium-scale of design intervention test us not only just design and shape appearance, but also touch for environmental aspects. By providing a well proper shelter at this faculty hopefully can help current and future generation of stu-dents also lecturers to arrange any type of events more properly and comfortably. Another point is this bulky dome structure may become as a new landmark for this faculty while also can be seen from the busy highway located next to this building.
