Mech-Tool Engineering Ltd [MTE] is a engineering- manufacturing company with a global name for the protection of people and equipment from fire, blast and radiant heat hazards in onshore and offshore oil & gas, renewable energy and petrochemical industries. MTE devote a unique wealth of specialist skills and over 50 years experience to design, build and deliver individual and dependable solutions.

In the course of helping some of the world’s biggestnames in the oil and gas sector to achieve highly accuratedesigns and cost projections, MTE has developed its owncomputer based tools and systems. These elite tools arethe culmination of in-depth experience and knowledge builtup over 50 years. They have been independently validatedand tested for their reliability in solving thermal, mechanicaland structural problems.

So efficient and cost-effective have they proved themselvesto be in the design of fire, blast and heat related structures,MTE decided to form a distinct Design Consultancybusiness unit in July 2012. Clients can now call on itsspecialist help either as a stand-alone service or as part of afull turnkey project alongside other MTE business streams -Fire and Blast Solutions and Modular Buildings.

This design consultancy concept was welcomed by thehigh hazard industries. Its launch was quickly followedby four commissions from a global offshore oil & gasconstruction company, and the team led by TechnicalDirector and Chartered Engineer Alan Mather expandedwith the addition of two more structural design engineers.

The team uses their proprietary tools combined withdesign expertise and knowledge to provide the very bestin accurate calculations to analyse what can sometimes becomplex structures - often including stressed skin design -to withstand a unique set of fire and blast conditions.

The very best analysis of how complex structures withstand blast and fire conditions, providing the speed, accuracy and credibility required to save costs.

Pre-engineered and fully optimised weight and cost savingsThe benefits of the proven MTE design approach go beyond providing peace of mind.

They are speed, accuracy and credibility, a combination which leads to cost savings. For example, in a project where the weight of 5000m2 of stainless steel fire and blast rated walls was an issue, MTE reduced the wall weights by 20% compared to comparative systems and this would be 67% against flat plate bulkhead.

MTE can offer up to H120 and jet fire rating approval without the need for passive fire protection, leading to further cost savings. Running the Design Consultancy from the MTE Darlington base gives customers the advantage of competitive rates, leading to still further savings. That’s how design counts.

Benefits of the MTE system• Fully optimised weight and cost savings• Blast, fire and thermal design including certification and

type approval• UK and Korean fabrication facilities• Off-site manufacture in a controlled environment• Integrated penetration frames, including doors and

removable panels

• No need for PFP• Minimal OPEX costs• Focus on optimised weight savings and value engineering• Professional end-to-end project managed service• Innovation led R&D, proven in practice• Type approved by Lloyds Register and DNV-GL• Quality Accreditation to ISO 9001: 2015

• Blast report reviews and interpretations• Stressed skin blast and fire design• Blast relief studies• Basis of design and functional specification compilation• Blast and fire wall design optimisation - weight / space

reductions• HVAC / electrical / modularisation optimisation studies• Structural / thermal / fire / seismic / PFP design
