The properties of aluminiumThe combination of the following properties makes aluminium the optimal material for our products:

• low weight• High strength • Superior malleability • Easy machining • Excellent corrosion resistance• Easy to mill, drill, cut, punch, bend,

weld, bond, tape...

Corrosion resistanceAluminium is an excellent material to use in climate’s with high heat and humidity. This is because aluminium reacts with the oxygen in the air to form an extremely thin layer of oxide, just a few hundredths of a micron thick (1 micron is one thousandth of a millimeter). This layer is dense and provides excellent corrosion protection. If damaged mechanically, the aluminium oxide layer repairs itself immediately.

Soil is not a uniform material. Mineral composition, moisture content, pH, presence of organic materials and electrical conductivity, can all vary widely from site to site. These differences make it difficult to predict a metal’s durability in soil. As a solution to this problem, Sapa Pole Products makes use of corrosion protection tape around the root section of the column.

Our clients have over 40 years of experience in the use of corrosion protection tape for the ground section of the column. This tape is extensively tested by TnO (a dutch independent research organization) to make sure that the protection around root/ground level of our column, meets the current European norms for lighting columns; the En 40-6.

The ground level area of all columns can be liable to damage, for example due to mechanical sweeping, mowing or paving activities. Sapa Pole Products has developed the Ground level protector, which provides optimal protection at ground level around the base of the column. The Ground level protector can either be factory installed by Sapa, or delivered as an accessory, for all Sapa columns. The Ground level protector is supplied in two parts, making it very easy to mount.

Alloy 6000 seriesPure aluminium is relatively soft. Its strength can be increased by alloying or cold working. Most of the aluminium that is commercially available is therefore alloyed with one or more other elements. The resulting alloy has different properties depending on which alloying elements are added. This makes the choice of alloy an important matter.

Sapa Pole Products makes use of the alloy: En-AW 6060 T66. Alloy 5000 series are mostly used for ships because of the corrosion resistance in seawater. Alloy 7000 series are mostly used in the airplane industry because of its exceptional strength. The most optimal alloy for lighting columns is logically alloy 6000 series because of its malleability, ageing capabilities, strength, extrusion possibilities and price-level.

Aluminium, the facts

Did you know that after iron, aluminium is by far the most

widely used metal in the world? This is because aluminium

has a unique combination of attractive properties. Many of these are

extremely important in our efforts to create a more sustainable society.

for example, did you know that because of the use of aluminium in cars, the weight of the car can be reduced? If we include the production and distribution (wheel-to-wheel) of fuel, a weight reduction of 100 kg in a car means a saving of 10 g of CO2 per kilometer, in other words 2000 kg during the life of the car.

Another example, are the developments around solar energy. Aluminium is often used in solar frameworks, but what makes aluminium so environmentally

Also the European Aluminium Association (EAA)* shows some impressive figures:

• In Europe’s northern countries, up to 92% of the aluminium from beverage cans are recycled, just as 95% of the aluminium from cars and 98% from buildings.

• In denmark, the recycling rate of aluminium from household waste has reached virtually 100% in 2007.

• Today, 40% of Europe’s aluminium supply comes from recycling. It is no wonder then that, 75% of the aluminium ever produced is still in use today.

* Check out the website of the European Aluminium

Association for more information: www.eaa.net

How does Sapa make use of these benefits? Well, Sapa has 9 extrusion cast houses across Europe for recycling. These cast houses have a yearly capacity of 200.000 tons (enough for more than 7 million lighting columns). Sapa Pole Products is committed in different areas when it comes to Corporate Social responsibility. Great examples of these are Carbon neutral and Cradle-to-Cradle columns, explained below.

Climate NeutralAt Sapa Pole Products we are aware that our company can contribute to a better environment. As a production company we can take steps to minimize CO2 emissions. That is why we analyzed our production process with the help of an independent consultancy group (www.ecofys.nl). At different stages in our production process, we have implemented energy savings, and with our patented reinforcement profile, we can reduce the weight of our columns by up to 20%. In 2007, we were the first company within the market to offer climate neutral lighting columns.

Cradle-to-cradle When it comes to ‘green’ certification, there are no bad products, just bad design, say German

chemist Michael Braungart and u.S. architect William Mcdonough, creators of the world’s leading ‘cradle-to-cradle’ (C2C) certification program.

As Braungart and Mcdonough put it, ‘waste equals food’: if a product is properly designed, at the end of its useful life, it can be broken down into its basic elements, which become the ‘nutrients’ for new products. Instead of ‘less waste’, the goal is ‘no waste’. In a C2C model, product materials circulate in an endless cycle with no net effect on the environment. To date, more than 200 companies worldwide have received C2C certification.

A number of European cities and municipalities have embraced C2C sustainability as a strategy to not only protect the environment but to also strengthen people’s welfare and economic prospects through new business opportunities. We are the first aluminium supplier in the world to offer Cradle to Cradle CertifiedCM lighting columns.*

friendly? The most important features are shown below:

• Aluminium is 100% recyclable, time after time.

• recycling aluminium only takes 5% of the energy needed to produce it in the first place.

• There is no downgrade during the recycling process.

• The columns of Sapa Pole products exist of a minimum of 95% recycled material.

Aluminum lighting columns up to 20m post top and 18m with bracket, are designed and calculated according to a calculation method in which several factors are taken into account: • Material• reference wind speed• Wind pressures• Terrain category• Safety factors

When these factors, in combination with other criteria are calculated, it can be determined if the lighting column meets the standard. Criteria’s to meet the standard are:

• Strength• Stiffness

Each critical section of the column e.g. base, door section are taken into calcula-tion. Another criteria is the stiffness of the column, regarding horizontal displacement and vertical displacement if the column is to carry a bracket.

Strength calculations

The key factor in delivering a good column is a decent strength calculation.

Sapa Pole Products has the right programs to perform thorough strength

calculations. This way we can guarantee

safety and quality of the columns we

deliver on a day to day basis.

Patented reinforcement profileThe columns of Sapa Pole Products are equipped with the VT5+ reinforcement profile that is welded inside the column. This patented profile gives extra strength to the section around the door area. This solution is stronger than type 5, as stated in the European norm En 40-3-3. Independent scientific research shows that besides the tension, the effect of torsion is also reduced.

Crash friendly columns

Have you ever thought of the impact of a car crashing into a tree?

Even with low speeds, a tree crash can be fatal. This is not the case

with aluminium lighting columns from Sapa.

frontal impact

CrASH frIEndly COluMnS CrASH frIEndly COluMnS

Explanation on classificationsImpact speed The 100 (for highways) and 70 (for rural roads) numbers in the family certifications indicate the impact speed of the vehicle.

Performance Level There are three categories of passive safety support structures:• High energy absorbing (HE): slow the vehicle

considerably on impact. The risk of secondary collisions with trees, pedestrians and other road users is reduced, however the severity of the impact for vehicle occupants can be high.

• low energy absorbing (lE): are generally designed to bend in front of and under the impacting vehicle, before shearing or detaching towards the end of the impact.

• non-energy absorbing (nE): permits the vehicle to continue after the impact with a limited reduction in speed. They may therefore provide a lower primary injury risk than energy absorbing support structures, but a higher secondary injury risk if other hazards exist behind the support structure.

Occupant safety level The occupant safety level is based on the results of ASI (Acceleration Severity Index) and THIV (Theoretical Head Impact Velocity). The levels of 1, 2 and 3 provide increasing levels of safety, in that order, by reducing impact severity.

Non-energy absorbing (NE) lighting columnsnE3 is the safest passive safe classification for medium and high speed roads. The impact speed of non-energy absorption (nE), combined with the 3rd occupant safety level, demand special requirements of a column. Sapa Pole Products has developed a special shear-off solution. This in-built solution is unique, as it will shear-off in the event of an impact, and is unaffected by the direction of the impact. The solution is based just above the ground level of the column.

High energy absorbing (HE) lighting columnsIn urban areas where risk of a secondary impact is high, lighting columns require a high energy absorbing classifi-cation. The best high energy absorbing classification for the occupants is HE3. To obtain the HE3 classification, a patented ‘catch-up’ construction is integrated into the column. The construction ensures that during an impact, the speed of the vehicle is heavily reduced, whilst at the same time, guaranteeing maximum occupant safety.

Available family classifications

note: The 3 behind nE is much better for the occupant safety

then the 3 behind lE or HE.

Crash tests Since the 1970’s, Sapa Pole Products has been conducting crash tests, to investigate the safest constructions for your roads. This long history of building up knowledge on this topic, has resulted in a range of safe, secure and sustainable aluminium solutions, for all of your lighting needs. We give you the opportunity to design and create safe roads with fully Certified (and endorsed by a notified Body) passively safe columns in all shapes and sizes.

The use of crash friendly, also referred to as passively safe lighting columns, traffic signals and sign posts, are becoming increasingly important on both highways and rural roads. The European standard En 12767 specifies performance requirements for passively safe support structures for permanent road equipment. It both defines and limits the levels of occupant injury severity when impacting these structures.

Powdercoating An electrostatic powder-coated finish is available in a range of colors. rAl colors as well as dB colors or maybe even your own PMS color that suits the municipality. On this page you can see an indication, but they can differ in real life.

Surface treatment

As explained earlier, the corrosion resistance of aluminium is excellent.

This is why there is no need to give aluminium columns a surface treatment.

However, if a street image needs a certain color or design, there are

of course possibilities to treat the surface with a coating or anodizing.

Anodizing Anodizing is one of the most common methods of surface treatment for alu minium, which gives the column a nice matt-silver appearance. The advan ta ges of anodizing are that it increases corrosion durability, is a dirt-repellent surface, offers a decorative finish with constant color and glow, is a touch friendly surface and a functional surface.

Decoline Are you searching for a lighting column with the look of wood, and yet prefer aluminium? decoline is the answer. Thanks to a unique and innovative process, Sapa Pole Products is able to produce columns in a range of decorative designs never before thought possible. It is also possible to create your own surface texture. The special Qualicoat coating guarantees colorfastness and offers optimal protection against the influence of weather and uV radiation.

Twist-on ground wingsEasy-to-install, twist-on ground wings prevent columns from rotating in the ground (available in all lighting column diameters).

Corrosion protection tapeSapa has over 40 years of experience in the use of corrosion protection tape for the ground portion of the column. This tape is extensively tested by TnO (a dutch independent research organization) to make sure that the protection around ground level of our column meets the current European norms for lighting columns, the En 40-6.

Ground level protector The ground level area of all columns can be liable to damage, for example due to mechanical sweeping, mowing or paving activities.

AlulockWith the introduction of the double sliding lock, Sapa has put an end to doors that stick or jam. The door section of our column is easy to operate and last the lifetime of the column. A door lock fitted with our special vandal-proof Alulock, can only be opened with a special Alulock key. The Alulock is universally available and can be purchased separately for all Sapa lighting columns.

Accessories for root-mounted columns

Columns that can be directly buried in the ground, or root-mounted columns, are also an option. For these columns we have to following accessories:

Twist-on ground platesEasy-to-install, twist-on ground plates prevent columns from sinking into the ground (available in all lighting column diameters).

Accessories

Sapa Pole Products provides basic accessories for different types of surfaces

and for the protection of columns.

ACCESSOrIES ACCESSOrIES

for installation in areas where root sections are not possible, we provide base-plates.

To make sure that the columns do not rotate in the ground, we offer special ground wings.

To prevent the sinking of columns into the ground, we offer universal ground plates.

Base-plates for the installation of lighting columns on concrete foundations, bridges and viaducts, Sapa Pole Products supplies cast-aluminium base-plates for all types of lighting columns. We also have a one piece base-plate which is factory-fitted to the column during the production process. This gives the column a nice esthetical finish. If you prefer delivery of the base-plate seperate from the column, there is also a possibility to order a two-part base plate, which can be assembled during installation and benefit from transport savings. Welded base-plates are also available.

Collection 2: Twins

The Twins collection is especially suitable for

parks and small streets (height 6m), but also for

roads that have footpaths or cycle paths next to

them (height 8 m). Starting from a single shaft,

the column finishes in a double bracket above.

The smooth transition from the column into the

bracket makes the column nice and elegant.

Collection 4: Nautic

Imagine a harbor with lighting columns that match the

ships. The nautic column is clearly inspired by the mast

of a sailing ship. The column lends itself well to Harbours

or Boulevard streetscapes, but also in parks and small

streets. The nautic is available in the heights from 5 to

8 meters.

Collection 5: Quadro

As the name says, the base of the Quadro is made

of a square profile. This gives the column a robust

appearance. The round top of the column will allow it to fit

in every street image you are designing for. The collection

is designed for parks, squares and small streets. This is

why the maximum height is 6 meters.

Collection 7: Surf

lighting columns with a high and a low bracket and lantern

are often seen in public areas. The Surf is a special version

of this kind of columns. There are two different types of the

Surf: columns with brackets that have a small distance in

height (6-10 m) and columns with brackets that have a big

distance in height (4 & 6 m). Especially the last one can be

used for roads that have footpaths or bicycle paths next to

them, or for decorative purposes in urban areas.
