INTRODUCTION

These guidelines describe the visual and verbal elements that represent Simpkins Edwards s corporate identity. This includes our name, logo and other elements such as colour, type and graphics.

Sending a consistent and controlled message of who we are is essential to presenting a strong, unified image of our organisation.

These guidelines reflect Simpkins Edwards s commitment to quality, consistency and style.The Simpkins Edwards brand, including the logo, name, colours and identifying elements, are valuable brand assets.

Each of us is responsible for protecting the firm’s interests by preventing unauthorised or incorrect use of the Simpkins Edwards name and marks.

THE PRIMARY LOGOTYPES

The Simpkins Edwards Masterbrand or Corporate Logo comprises two elements, the logo symbol and logo type. The Logo Symbol is a representation of the S with middle bar also forming the E.

The Logo Type has been carefully chosen for its modern and yet refined, highly legible style.

The typeface is Futura Bold and Book also chosen to complement and balance perfectly with the logo symbol.

The corporate logo is presented through the use of colour as well as shape and form. The two corporate colours are Blue and Red. It is a fresh and appealing blend of colours chosen for their strong combination - modern - classic - timeless.

UsageThe main logo is the dark blue logo used on white or light coloured backgrounds.

This logo is also to be used where enough horizontal space is present.

For darker backgrounds you will find an alternative on the following pages.

It is important to keep corporate marks clear of any other graphic elements. To regulate this, an exclusion zone has been established around the corporate mark. This exclusion zone indicates the closest any

other graphic element or message can be positioned in relation to the mark, of the symbol itself and our company name – they have a fi xed relationship that should never be changed in any way.

Defi nition-Whenever you use the logo, it should be surrounded with clear space to ensure its visibility and impact. No graphic elements of any kind should invade this zone.

Typographic hierarchy is another form of visual hierarchy, a sub-hierarchy in an overall design project. Typographic hierarchy presents lettering so that the most important words are displayed with the most impact so users can scan text for key information.

Typographic hierarchy creates contrast between the elements. There are a variety of ways you can create a sense of hierarchy. Here are some of the most common techniques for Simpkins Edwards layouts.

THE FONT

Gotham is a family of widely used geometric sans-serif digital typefaces designed by American type designer Tobias Frere-Jones in 2000.

And the same security protocols widely used by internet banks are applied to give the visible reassurance of an https website address and familiar closed padlock icon.

Effi ciencyAllows clients to access key documents 24/7, eliminating postal

delays. These documents remain in the Portal to be accessed at any time should clients require copies of accounts/tax returns in future, thus avoiding the need to search for paper copies.

Electronic approvalThe portal allows electronic approval of documents such as tax

returns and accounts. Electronic approval is backed with a full audit trail. It can also deal with multiple approvers i.e. where there is a set of accounts that needs approval by more than one person.

To access the portal, All clients need is an email address. With this we can issue an invite for you to set up your portal account.

Where clients have an e mail address the portal will be our preferred method for obtaining approval of documents such as accounts and tax returns. The death of a loved one is a diffi cult and emotional time. This is compounded by the need to sort out administrative and fi nancial issues, for which a grant of probate or letters of administration is often required from the probate registry (commonly known as obtaining probate).

The grant allows the executors/administrators of the estate to collect in, administer and distribute the deceased’s assets in accordance with the will or intestacy rules as appropriate.

Probate work is a reserved legal service and Simpkins Edwards are licensed by the ICAEW to undertake this work.

CHANGES TO TAX RELIEF FOR BUY TO LET OWNERS

STAMP DUTYLAND TAX - 3% SURCHARGE

Restrictions on tax relief for fi nance costs from April 2017.The restrictions are being phased in over four years and by 2020/21, relief for all fi nancing costs (i.e. mortgage interest and arrangement fees) incurred will be given as a basic rate tax reduction only. Therestriction will not apply to landlords of furnished holiday lettings or purchases made using a limited company.

How much extra tax will you have to pay?From 2020/21, a higher rate taxpayer will, obtain only 20% relief for interest paid rather than 40%. So if the mortgage interest paid is £10,000 p.a. the extratax liability will be £2,000. Most basic rate taxpayers will be unaff ected by these changes but if property ‘profi ts’ (ignoring

fi nance deductions) pushes their taxable income above the higher-rate tax threshold (currently £45,000) they too may be facing a higher tax bill.

What action can be taken to improvethe position?The new rules do not apply to companies; however there are a number of issues you will need to think about carefully if you intend to use a company. It may be possible to transfer assets to a lower-earning spouse or make additional pension contributions to mitigate the tax increase. If you are thinking about making a new investment in residential properties you need to consider impact of the new tax rules.

Purchasers of an additional residential property (such as a buy-to-let property or second home) are now subject to a 3% SDLT surcharge.

The residential SDLT rate of 2% for the £125k - £250k band becomes 5% for the purchase of an additional residential property and so on for the other existingrates.

For example: If an individual purchases a second residential property as a buy-to-let investment for £200,000 the SDLT payable is now £7,500. Under the old rules this SDLT payable would have been£1,500 – an increase in SDLT of 400%!

The higher rates will apply to most purchases of additional residential properties where, following a purchase, an individual owns two or more residentialproperties and is not replacing their main

residence. The higher rates will also apply to purchases of residential property by companies.

The vast majority of transactions, such as fi rst time buyers purchasing their fi rst residential property or home owners moving from one main residence to another, are unaff ected. In the case of joint purchasers, the higher rates do not apply where each purchaser only owns one residential property.
