As I drove up to the clubhouse at Mission Hills

Country Club to begin my coverage for the Kraft

Nabisco Championship, one thing really stood

out....Oscar De La Hoya’s new Bentley. A gorgeous

car that really drew people’s attention.

I, like many others attending Wednesday’s Pro-

Am, was hoping that I might get a chance to meet

Oscar and some of the other celebrities playing that

day. As the day progressed I crossed paths with

many of the folks people “come to see”: Cheech

Marin, Michael Bolton, Anthony Anderson, Craig

T. Nelson and a host of other celebrities playing golf

and enjoying the day.

What amazed me most was how gracious and

approachable celebs are during a Pro-Am event like

this one. The individual I most wanted to meet was

Oscar....the owner of the Black Bentley. I’ve been a

boxing fan most of my life and meeting Oscar would

indeed be a thrilling event for me. I followed Oscar’s

group for a little while and was surprised at how

friendly he was to everyone wanting an autograph

or photo. Another thing that surprised me was

that Oscar is a very good golfer! He can really put

the ball out there....way down the fairway. Shortly

after his group finished their drives on one hole I

asked Oscar if he would take a photo with me. In

a second, Oscar was standing shoulder to shoulder

with me and snap, that photo’s in my album.

What I found out is that Oscar is not alone when

it comes to enjoying the day with his fans. All

the celebrities I met were making the most of it

and seemingly taking their followers along for an

enjoyable day of golf in a perfect setting.

Both of the desert’s professional tournaments offer

the opportunity to meet and follow our golfing

celebrities during their Pro-Am days. At the PGA’s

Humana Challenge and the LPGA’s Kraft Nabisco

Championship you can see, up close, your favorites

from Alice Cooper to Bruce Jenner !

If you have not had the opportunity to enjoy one

of these two events, I encourage you to do so. It

makes for a fun day and creates memories that will

last a lifetime.

One Practice Swing Per ShOtQuestion: Should I take a practice swing before each shot?Golfers are very individual. For some, a practice swing is very helpful, for others it is of little value.

I recommend that new players take one, and only one, practice swing per full swing shot. The main purpose of the practice swing is to keep the player loose and flexible, and to help feel the tempo of the swing.

When making a practice swing, let the club head brush the grass. This will give one the feeling of allowing the club head to descend and meet the ball squarely. If the club doesn’t touch the grass, there is a chance the shot might be topped.

Also, don’t be thinking numerous swing thoughts during the practice swing. Keep it simple when you are on the golf course. Save all those extra thoughts for the practice tee.

One exception--short game shots, such as pitches and chips can require several practice strokes as they are mainly touch and feel in the execution. When you watch the professional, you will see them take several practice strokes especially on the very challenging and delicate shots.

I do not make many practice swings, but after taking a break between nines I will take a few on the 10th tee. Muscles can tighten up when there is a delay and we have stopped swinging for a while.

To reiterate, limit yourself to one practice swing per full shot. If you are taking more than one, you might irritate your playing partners, and contribute to slow play. Any new player, who wants to be invited again, needs to keep up with the pace of play.
