Tension, An enemy of Golf

One of the most frequently asked questions in golf is; how

can I get more distance? Women tend to have more problems

in this area because they do not have as much natural strength

as men do. Men on the other hand ask; how can I keep the

ball in the fairway and hit more greens in regulation? The

two main factors creating distance are correct contact and

clubhead speed. Correct contact gives us a straight shot that

goes up in the air and has that good feeling and sound as the

club contacts the ball. We all love that feeling but if we are

topping the ball or hitting behind it, what good is 100miles

per hour clubhead speed.?

To improve contact usually requires a visit to your friendly

golf professional. It is the concept of clubhead speed that

I would like to expand upon in this article. We need to

understand the difference between speed and power. If I ask

a student to swing faster, he or she will usually swing harder.

Speed is fast motion not forceful hitting. Remember we

are swinging a 15-16ounce implement at a 1.62 ounce ball.

When a lady golfer is asked to put everything she has into the

shot, the mostly likely result is one very tired lady. I have had

ladies tell me that after 18 holes of golf, their shoulders ached

and they felt like going home and taking a nap. This is not

what golf is supposed to be all about. If you remember, some

of your longest and best shot had the most effortless swings.

There are several factors that will increase speed. We will

look at one of the major ones below..

Tension is a great detriment to achieving speed. When I

see a golfer standing over the ball with a death grip on the

club, veins standing out on the forearms, arms scrunched

to the body and the legs braced, it is not have a picture of

a potentially fast free flowing swing. When you see other

athletes, participating in events that require speed, we rarely

see them try to tighten up or tense their muscles. The runners

and swimmers are always stretching, shaking and doing their

best to keep their muscle relaxed.

A golfer creates the most tension by having too tight of a grip.

Squeezing the club causes tension to go up through your arms

all the way to your neck. Tight muscles are slow muscles.

Sam Snead, who was a classic swinger of the club and won

more tournaments that any other man, described his golf grip

pressure as that of holding a baby bird. It was tight enough

to prevent the bird from escaping, but not tight enough to

injure the bird. I think if we gave the baby bird test to a large

group of golfers, we would end up having a very high pile of

dead baby birds.

I remember my Aunt Sylvia who taught violin for many

years. She emphasized the fingers and hands must be kept

free of tension in order to play an allegro movement. If you

knit or type with excellent speed, are your fingers tight? A

light grip will allow you to swing the club and feel the head as

opposed to pushing and forcing the club back to the ball.

One word of caution about the light grip, it may allow you to

have too much wrist cock at the top of your swing. We need

some wrist cock but not a flop. Another word of caution, if

you throw the club out of your hands, I think you over did it.
