1Animals Animals that adapted to the environment are called xerocoles All animals have adaptations that are helping them survive in the desert Examples of animals: Camels, coyote, Cottontails, Jack rabbits, Squirrels and Lizards

2Adaptations in Camels Camels are animals which travel in the desert frequently As water is scarce in the desert they drink up 32 gallon(46 litres) of water at a time. Their humps are there energy reservoir, they store there food as fat in their humps The camels survive on plants like cactus and other thorny plants which store water. For this they have thick lips.3 They have thick eyelashes to keep away sand from entering the eyes During sandstorms they have the ability of closing their nostrils

4Adaptations in tortoise The tortoise may be active during day depending upon the weather. If the weather is to hot it remain in shelter until the weather cools down. These type of animals are called Nocturnal Animals. It burrows itself under the sand for escaping extreme climatic conditions.

5 The adult can survive for days without water in the desert. They obtain their water from their diet When the animal is in danger they have the ability to contract their legs and arms into their shell
