Description of Text My topic is on Increase in university fees and my angle is on cuts and poverty. This documentary is from ten years ago I chose this particular documentary because it is similar to mine although the topic is different the angle is the same as it is on cuts and recession. It shows how violence took place in the past has it changed because it’s still happening now as when students protested to stop university fees from increasing were violence took place. This documentary is biased as it mainly appeals to those who are interested about political issues. Whereas my documentary would appeal to those students that do want to go university and make a future. There are opinions from both men and women which was on the riots in the South Yorkshire colliery 1984 where four men where interviewed they thought that it was unfair they got accused for being involved in the riots and got charged for something which they did not commit, which was located outside the court. They were not guilty and the charges were dropped, each suspect they were saying that they were not to blame they done nothing wrong showing images of those who should have been caught who started off the riots. As they caused a lot of chaos, they said they were not defeated. However there is no presenter throughout the whole documentary instead there is a voice over of a women with images of places which were affected in the riots as well as giving information. They showed the location were the riots took place in this case it happened in Orgreave. There where several facts included in the documentary. Some of the facts are it happened in Sheffield Friday December 15 th 1893, were the case was finally seeking closure. Protesters came from many areas such as Scotland, South Wales, Derbyshire and County of Durham which they all came in coaches and their purpose was force and violence. It was a long strike, the police had plans and had blocked the plant and where in control because they received information before the pickets. The documentary had no humour instead it was formal with a serious tone which immediately inform the audience that it is important.

Some of the facts are it happened in Sheffield Friday December 15th 1893, were the case was finally seeking closure.

Potential Audience for Text • This documentary appeals to teenagers and adults, the age range is 18 and onwards. The target audience

gender appeals to both males and females however as many of the protestors in the riots were males this suggests that this documentary mainly appeals to males rather than women. It mainly appeals to white ethnic groups as it was located in Yorkshire, as many whites live there.

• It targets all socio Economic Groups from A to E to those who have jobs as well as those who are unemployed because it’s aimed towards everyone whether they are educated or not. Living in cities to towns.

• There interests will consist of watching online documentaries, keeping updated with the news, they are the type of people who would be involved in protests, they would be involved in arranging campaigns, they would also have political views and those who are likely to vote to get their views known.

Key influences on your idea- Content and form

• Camera- The documentary has used a variety of shots which makes it appealing for the audience to watch because it make it more attractive to watch. It also gives me ideas on what types would look appropriate for me to use in my documentary.

• Editing- Few effects have been used such as fade in and outs during images appearing on screen as well as graphic at the beginning for the text to inform the audience such as the names of defendants. I can use graphics in my documentary in order to give then information.

• Opinions- I have got opinions from people who were accused of the riots, an innocent victim who was attacked by the police, a solicitor and the public. I will use this in my documentary to make it look more trustworthy and dependable as there will be answers from different types of people.

• Use of conventions - The documentary includes conventions such as archive footage of miners working and a clip of the riots. A voice over was also used to explain to the audience what was happening, this can help me in my documentary as archive footage will be used to give more information to my audience, as well as keeping them amused so they do not get bored with only talking through out the documentary.

Use of camera • For use of camera a variety of different types of shots were used as well as movement. At the beginning of the

documentary panning was used to demonstrate open scenery, a tilt was also used from the building to the sky. Zooms were used to show the images of the riots on newspapers. Mid shots, extra close ups and close ups were mainly used to show people expressions on how they feel during interviews.

• Longshot was used at the beginning to show the body language of people who did not face charges walking out of the court happily smiling with relieve.

• Most of the images are steady with no camera movement showing the places which affected and destroyed during the cause of the riots, such as buildings set on fire.

• Longshot of a detailed image demonstrating the battle between the police and public during the riots at Orgeaves was shown to denote the violence that had taken place.

• Another image was used to denote police handling of a man as they were walking illustrates to us the security that

the police demonstrated during the riots.

• A close of a man driving the bus and longshot of traffic passing by showing shots of Orgreave mining site using close ups and longshots to show that they were working.

• At one point a high angle was used this showed that the man was vulnerable and weak and that the police had more power than him.

• Mid shots, and close ups were used to show of a man describing the experience of his part in the riots, as he adds that he was beaten up.

Use of Sound

• Dialogue- There is dialogue from people of the actions which took place by the police which was disappointing and unacceptable, informing the audience about their experience and how it was all set out.

• Voice Over – The presenter in this case the women’s voice was heard mostly during the documentary.

• Natural Sounds – Natural sounds were used in the documentary such as birds twittering at the opening sequence, the engine of trucks working at the sight, the bus and people cheering and clapping.

Use of Editing • Comparing this documentary to a more modern one the use of editing for this documentary is not

fast pace with cuts instead it is slow with fade in and out on images.

• At the beginning of the documentary the title Fades in as it starts in white, bold capital letters.

• No effects and transitions have been used at the opening sequence of the documentary, there is just dialogue throughout there is no background music to keep the audience entertained.

• There was not much use of editing apart from the text which was used when interviewing each person with their name at the bottom of the screen informing the audience who they are. As well as the title at the beginning to inform the audience what the documentary is about.

• No sound has been added in for a effect only natural sounds have been used.

• It’s basic and simple to do doesn’t look professionally done because of this does not make it as eye-catching for the audience to view.

• Although voice overs have been added on images appearing on screen an example for this is the extracts from prosecutor's opening speech for the Orgreave Trail.

Content and Conventions

• Mode of address – The mode of address used by the presenter in the documentary was direct and was very formal.

• Expert Opinions - Gareth Peirce the solicitor takes Michael Wilsons’s side a man who was attacked by the police during the riots and states that they did not even apologise to say they were sorry to him. He was a innocent man found not guilty she was totally against how the police behaved.

• Interviews – Men giving their views and opinions on the action which took place.

• Graphics – They are used at the beginning for the title to inform the audience what the documentary is about.

• Relevant Images – Images were appearing on screen which were all relevant to the topic being explained. An example for this is two polices grabbing hold of a innocent man.
