Description of Siva Sutra ShivaSutras are believed to be a Rahasyagama Sast rasangraha or Sivopanisat Sangraha a compendium containing secret doctrine revealed by Lord Shiva. It is stated that once Srikanthanatha, an incarnation of Lord Shiva, appeared before sage Va sugupta in a dream and directed him that the secret doctrines inscribed on a particular rock on the Mahadeva mountain, about ! kms., a"ay from Srinagar, behind the famous #arvan garden, be studied and taught to those "ho deserved such a favor. $n a"akening sage Va sugupta visited the desired spot and the particular stone turned upside do"n by his mere touch. #e found the Sutras engraved on the big rock "hich is still kno"n as %samkaropala%. Sage Va sugupta the discoverer of ShivaS utras "as the guru of &allata. #e is believed to have flourished in the beginning of the 'th century (.D. ( prolific "riter and learned disciple of (charya ( bhinavagupta, Sh. &semara)a, must have "ritten a lucid and detailed e*position of each Sutras kno"n as Vimarsini, in the + th century (D he Sutras are divided in three a"akenings dealing "ith the three means of liberation vi-. Sambhava, Sakta and (nava upayas respectively. hus these ShivaSutras thro" a flood of light on the entire system of Shivayoga supreme identity of the individual self "ith the divine. It is pertinent to mention here that our beloved master Shri Ish"ara S"arupa S"ami Lakshman)oo Mahara)a e*plained these Siva Sutras "ithout &semara)a%s commentary/ in four of his Sunday lectures in simple 0nglish some t"enty years (ppro*imately Mid '1+%s/ ago at his Ish"ara (shram situated in the vicinity of the famous Mughal garden,  2ishat, Srinagar, &ashmir. . 3aitanyamatma . 4niversal 3onsciousness is one%s o"n nature. the "hole differentiated 4niverse comes to an end.

his "heel is the "eb of the perceptions 6ometimes called the "eb of karma.

#o"ever it is very difficult to get off that "heel=it is far easier to stand at the center of it 6

"atch the senses "heeling about 6

"atch the thoughts as they arise 6"atch the mind as it reports 6

"atch ho" perception arives in the mind 6

"atch ho" the mind modifies it 6"atch ho" reaction arises to perceptions call.

It is only a void of definition 6

of concepts inability to e*press the nature of consciousness.

!. 3ommon kno"ledge arising out of differentiation/ 6

constitutes 9agrat "akefulness/.

a thing is that or this naming it/ 6

i.e. conceptuali-ing reality 6Boes to constitute the entire "aking state.

'. Svapna Vikalpah

'. Individual differentiated kno"ledgein the recess of one%s o"n mind is Svapna dream/.

Crom this reservoir of e*perience "e create the dream "orld by going into it.

In meditation visions are common,

 because the attention is turned in"ard.

+. Loss of discrimination in the field of una"areness

is Susapti deep sleep/

Ahen the Void is reali-ed,it is non6different from deep sleep

yet consciousness reigns.

(fter deep sleep, "e a"ake and remember "e slept deeply 6

thus some part of us "as conscious,

else rememberance "ould not be possible.

hence his desire cannot be checked by any po"er.

!. #is being in the ecstatic state of Samadhi besto"s bliss and happiness to the "holehumanity or the totality of en)oyment in the universe constitutes or comprises/ his

ecstatic state of Samadhi.

'. Saktisandhane sarirotpattih

l'. :y putting concentrating/ one%s mind on 4niversal 0nergy, body internal or e*ternal,

is formed by his mere "ill. Such po"er is attainable by him in t"o other states also vi-.dream and deep sleep/.

8+. :hutasandhanabhutaprthaktvavisvasamghattah.

8+. Such a <ogi is capable of i/ helping humanity unbounded by space and time ii/

casting off his body for specified timeperiods, and iii/ manifesting his body at various places simultaneously, by remaining in Bod consciousness.

8. Suddhavidyodayaccakresatvasiddhih

8. Ahen such a yogi abstains from such po"ers, he attains lordship over the "heel of

4niversal 0nergies through the rise of ure kno"ledge.
