Analog Telephone• Uses standard voice telephone lines• Uses a modem to place a telephone call

to another modem at a remote site• Two major disadvantages • 1.cannot be used to call while modem

us being used • 2. limited bandwidth• Speed usually 56 kbps • Not good for busy networks

DSL(Digital Subscriber Line)

DSL is an always-on technology meaning that you don’t have to dial up each time you want to connect to the internet. With DSL you can be on the internet and have a phone call at the same time.

You can do this because the phone company the bandwidth of the analog voice on the lines

There are a few thing to consider when choosing DSL. DSL has distance limitations. The lines used with DSL were designed to carry analog information. Meaning that the distance that the signal can be sent is limited.

Another thing to consider is that the information and data must be separated at the customer site. You have to have a device called a splitter that separates the connection to the phones and the connection to the local network devices.

Integrated Services Digital Network•Standard for sending voice, video, and data over telephone wires•Uses digital tech to carry data•Better than analog•Three services basic rate interface(182Kbps), primary rate interface(1.500 Mbps), and broadband•Two different types of communication channels B( data, voice, video) and D(controlling signaling)

ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line)

ADSL is the most commonly used DSL technology. ADSL has different bandwidth capabilities in each

direction. ADSL has fast download speed but a slow upload

speedThe download speed is typically around 1.5 Mbps. While the upload speed is a lot slower than that.Because of the slow upload rate of ADSL it typically

does not work well when hosting a web server or FTP server.
