    First Immigrant Generation ************************************************** 1. Alexander Hay. Born 01 Aug 1784 in Spittal & Ford Northumberland, Eng. Died 20 Mar 1868 in Harvey. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Occupation Farmer, Blacksmith. Religion Presbyterian. Alexander Hay and his wife Jane and a family of eight children ranging in age from 21 years to 1 year, left from the port Berwick-upon-Tweed on 28 May 1837 on the brig Cornelius of Sunderland, and arrived in Saint John, NB 12 Jul 1837. They travelled to Fredericton on the steamer, Water Witch. They received Land Grant Lot #13W, 92 acres, in Harvey Settlement and were among the first settlers of Harvey. Their second child, Andrew, born 1817, died on 12 May 1838, as they were getting settled on their land grant. (It is believed he died of appendicitis--from stories passed down through family tradition.) Andrew was buried on their own land, and in the 1950s the gravestone was moved to Harvey Settlement Cemetery. He married Jane Robinson, 4 Jun 1815 in Ford, Parish Records & Dissenters, Eng. Born Approx 1794 in Spittal & Ford Northumberland. Died 22 Jun 1878 in Harvey. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. They had the following children: 2 i. William "Billy" Hay

Christen 15 Mar 1816 in Spittal, Northumberland, Eng. Died 14 Apr 1901. Occupation Blacksmith. He married Sarah "Sally" Dorcas, daughter of Aaron Dorcas & Jane, 3 Oct 1838 in York Co., NB By James Somerville, Anglican . Born 1816 in Ireland. Died 5 Apr 1899 in Williamsburg, N.B. From York Co NB Marriage Register B 1837-1850 (PANB): Witnesses to marriage were Alex'r Hay and Thomas Briggs. Sally died 5 Apr 1899, age 83. They had the following children: 10 i. Jane Hay

    3. Andrew Hay. Son of Alexander Hay & Jane Robinson. Born 1817 in Eng. Christen 28 Oct 1817 in Spittal United Presbyterian. Died 12 May 1838 in Harvey. Andrew was the first person to die in the new community. He was struck by a searing pain in his abdomen and is believed to have died of acute appendicitis. He was buried on his father's farm and for many years the grave marker was observed by the early settlers. The gravestone was later moved to Harvey Settlement Cemetery. 4. Alexander Hay Jr. Son of Alexander Hay & Jane Robinson. Born 1818 in Eng. Christen 25 Nov 1818 in Spittal United Presbyterian. Died 10 May 1887 in Harvey. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Occupation Farmer, Teacher. Religion Presbyterian. 1881 Census lists Alexander's occupation as Teacher. He married Susanna Nesbitt, daughter of John Nesbitt & Ann, 2 Dec 1844 in Harvey Settlement By Rev. Daniel McCurdy . Born 12 Feb 1816 in Wooler, Eng. Christen 25 Feb 1816 in Wooler, United Presbyterian Cheviot St.--NC. Died 20 May 1897 in Harvey. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Religion Presbyterian. PANB Marriage Records F635, p. 265: Alexander Hay and Suzanna Nesbit on Dec 2, 1844 by Daniel McCurdy, witnesses Thomas Nesbit, John Hay, Jane Nesbit. Susanna died at age 81 years 3 months and 9 days. They had the following children: 21 i. Alexander "Sandy" Hay

    22 ii. John Alexander Hay 5. Mary Hay. Daughter of Alexander Hay & Jane Robinson. Born Approx 1823 in Northumberland, Eng. Mary was 14 in 1837, by 1841 she had either married, moved away, or died. No further information. 6. John "Jack" Hay. Son of Alexander Hay & Jane Robinson. Born Approx 1826 in Northumberland, Eng. Died 4 Apr 1900 in Harvey. It would appear that John's first wife died before the 1861 Census was taken. Children: Jessie, Robert and Susanna were born approx. 1855 to 1860, and appear in the 1861 census living in Harvey Settlement with grandparents Alexander and Jane, and John and Jane. (Susanna or Susan was possibly Jane's daughter.) In the 1871 Census, Robert age15, and Susan age 11, are living with John Hay and his wife Elizabeth, and Jessie, age 16, is in the home of John Dorcas and Margaret. He first married Margaret, 9 Oct 1855 in Charlotte Co., NB. Died Approx 1856/1860. Unable to decipher Margaret's surname from marriage record--looks like "Corkeran" or some similar name beginning with the letter "C". (P. 30, Charlotte Co. Marriages, RS148, F15477. Married by James Quinn, Church of the Immaculate Conception.) They had the following children: 23 i. Jessie Levina Hay

    24 ii. Robert Andrew Hay He second married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Dorcas, daughter of William Dorcas & Margaret, 9 Nov 1864 in Harvey By Rev. Samuel Johnson . Born 18 Jul 1840. Christen 22 May 1846 in Cathedral Records, Fredericton. Died 18 Apr 1915 in McAdam. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. From Religious Intelligencer, 18 Nov 1864: " Married Harvey (York Co.) by Rev. Samuel Johnson, 9th Nov, John Hay and Miss Elizabeth Dorcas, both of Harvey"

From Cathedral records, Fredericton: “Baptized 22 May 1846, Elizabeth Darkis, b. 18 Jul 1840, d/o William and Margaret Darkis -- at Harvey.” (PANB F1114, Cathedral Records, Fredericton) They had the following children: 25 i.     7. Jane Hay. Daughter of Alexander Hay & Jane Robinson. Born 6 Jun 1831 in Northumberland, England. Died 30 Nov 1909 in Williamsburg. Buried in Williamsburg Cemetery. She had the following child:

    30 i. Susan Hay From Headquarters, 20 Jul 1864: "Married 18th inst., by Rev. Dr. Brooke, John Alexander and Miss JaneHay, both of Manners Sutton (York Co.)" From York Co., NB Marriage Register C 1850-1866 (PANB), witnesses to the marriage were Joseph Amour and Annie Amour. There are two dates in the York County, New Brunswick, Marriage Records, Book D, 1866-1879, for Jane's marriage to John Edmonds: 1868 by John Taylor, Justice of the Peace, and 22 Feb 1869 by Rev. Samuel Johnson. (At that time there were newspaper items regarding the first marriage date and the fact that John Taylor wasn't licensed to perform marriages, so at a later date a second ceremony was performed by the minister.) Witnesses on the first date were John Hay and William Hay, and on the second, John Hay and Elizabeth Hay.

    She married John Edward Alexander, 18 Jul 1864 in St. Paul's Church, Fredericton . Born Approx 1817. They had the following children:

Born Approx 1839 in Harvey Settlement, York Co., NB. She first married George W. Anderson, 7 Jul 1863 in York Co., NB . Born Approx 1829 in NB. From York Co NB Marriage Register C 1850-1866 (PANB), married by Rev. Samuel Johnson, with witnesses William Dorcas and Sarah Ann Hay. In the 1871 Census for Manners Sutton, living with George and Jane Anderson and their four children, was: Margaret Hay age 18 Margaret Hay age 2/12 Feb.
