The following are Johnny Sarvis s closing comments from the 14th page of his work. It may seem out ofplace here but we did not want to put it at the end where it may have been lost to the public in one ofthe truncated generations.

One sure sign that you have a good bit of Alford in you is if you re born with this, almost uncontrollable urge, to fish and hunt, even the women will - dig bait- andgrab an old cane pole if the wind is right. I ve tried hard to get this history as accurately as possible and I hope I haven toffended anyone by being so truthful, but I can t see writing a history unless youtell the truth. I do hope that the younger generation in each of the families (of the 6children of Mantha and Arnold), will sit down with the older ones and record allthat they can remember before it is too late. I know I intend to record all that myuncles Meddie and Ebbie, as well as Mama and aunt Ratha, can remember aboutPreston and Isabella. There are numerous people that helped me in one way or another, and all put withmy unending questions. I would like to thank Eula, Eloise, Brant, Mother, AuntRatha, Grover, and Eva Alford Squires. I especially would like to thank Mr.Harvey Holt, who, is just a world of information about Horry and if anyone doing ahistory ever gets stuck, it would pay them to search him out. I can t say enoughabout my uncles, Meddie and Ebbie, who always tells the truth about the oldpeople, whether its good or bad. I have enjoyed their stories since I was a boy and

they make Preston seem bigger than life. I hope I can get it all written down, eventhe story of Preston having a shootout with some people about his children. I justfeel like every boy should be fortunate enough to have uncles such as mine. I amreally proud that I can say my mother was an Alford. __Johnny Sarvis, Jr.

From Johnny Sarvis:

John B. Alford - Born in 1795, his mother s name is not known. The B. in his namecould stand for BETHEL, which could have been his mother s maiden name. Atany rate he married Dolly Carrell and they had three daughters, Priscilla whomarried William Norris and lived to be over 100 yrs. old. Mary, who marriedJoshua Long. Mary had died by 1848, but left children Mantha, Elizabeth, John,Susannah, Mary Elizabeth and Joshua. John B. and Dolly s other daughter Doteymarried Robert Allen and moved from N.C. to Bayboro, where they raised afamily. They named one son John and the other Bethel after her and Duke s daddy,John B., I suppose. Anyway Bethel Allen grew-up and later named his son Bethel, which strengthens my belief that John B. s mother s maiden name was probably,BETHEL. The only son of John B. and Dolly Carrell was our Duke.

The following was reported to be among the Horry Co. estate records; however, it was notincluded in the extensive collection of the late Mr. L.E. Alford:

Dukeand his wife raised all of their children in the Galivants Ferry area, before movingto Bayboro, where the 1880 census records them as living. Duke died in the 1880 sand is buried at old Gethsemane Cemetery. In traveling around, one day I spokewith an old lady who told me she had heard all of her life that the old cemeterywas originally the Alford cemetery. I believe at the latter time of the old church, aMcQueen man owned the land of the cemetery and never would deed it to thechurch and consequently the church was moved. I do know that in 1903, there wasa paper drawn up concerning the burial rights of the cemetery. W.G. (Gaston)Alford and his wife M. Emma Rogers signed the paper and W.F. (Frank) Holt wasthe magistrate.

In Plat book P, page 518, Feraby bought on 14 Nov 1851, from Daniel Johnston,165 acres on Loosen Swamp for $10.00. In plat books T-page 398 and X-page 544,Duke sold on 25 Jun 1874, to G.T. Winders, 10 acres on Little Loosen Bay for$5.00, and G.T. sold it to Frank Burroughs & Co., about the same time. Duke alsosold, on 20 Dec 1878, the other 150 acres in the fork of Loosen Swamp, toBurroughs & Co. for $50.00. Other land that Duke owned was never recorded, because there was no law requiring people to record their land.

After Duke died in the 1880 s, Feraby lived within walking distance of her son[Levi] Solomon Sol, until her death on 08 Oct 1893....

Rebecca Feraby shows living with Duke and Feraby in the 1880 census. After that Ican find no trace of her. Drucilla, the baby, married Long John Cannon.

1860 Kingston, Horry Co., SC, dwelling #534 (William and his previous wife and 2 children, living3 houses from Daniel W. Alford family and his second wife, Edith): W.L. Graham 37 farmer; SarahM. 20; John C. 6/12; and Wm. B. 5. All were born in SC. It seems probable-age difference, listing ofson William after son John, and age of John-that Sarah was actually his second wife, and William B.Graham was his son from a previous marriage. This William probably died before the 1870 census, when his father named another son William, b. about 1862.

1870 Bayboro, Horry Co., SC, dwelling #293: William Graham, age 25 farming; Eadey 33; Caperes10, William 8, Franklin 4, and Dolley Ann 2. All were born in SC. John Capers Graham wasdefinitely the son of William's previous wife. Since we don't know the date of William and Edith'smarriage or the death date of Sarah, we can't be sure of the mother of William, age 8, but it ispossible that he is the son of Edith since she stated in 1900 that she had 6 children but only 4 wereliving, the other deceased child being Linnie.

From Johnny Sarvis:

The oldest girl, Edith and the brother Joshua disappeared from Horry County records in the 1860 s.Edith was born about 1836, and Joshua was born in 1845. There is a story handed down from mygrandaddy and some of his brothers that they had an aunt and uncle, that had to leave Horry becausethey ran afoul of the law, supposedly for counterfeiting money, so they went to Texas and got inthe oil business. I do know that there are Alford s in Texas, in the oil business, that are kin to us.When some Alford man died, about 1933, there was a famous Horry lawyer hired to investigate theinheritance. Some people still say we would have been in the OIL, if that lawyer had not gottenkilled in a car wreck.

From Johnny Sarvis:

Arnold Bethel Alford - Born 09 Jan 1844 died 06 Aug ,1917. The third of five brothers, Arnoldgrew up in the Galivants Ferry area. At the outbreak of the "WAR FOR STATES RIGHTS" , Arnoldjoined a group of young men to protect the "homefront". He is recorded as being a corporal in the"Lake Swamp Roughnecks", and Carmi Johnson (Johnson was spelled Johnston until after theWAR), who would later go to Virginia to fight, was recorded as the captain. (Carmi, the son ofMeshach Johnson & Rebecca Rhea, was the dad of Laura, who married Thomas Skipper and dad ofBenjamin Franklin Johnson who married Ida Floyd, so he was the granddad of Commander, Tomand Nip Johnson and Ruth Magnolia Skipper, who was Preston Alford's lst wife. Carmi marriedSarah Skipper. His sister, Isabella, married Noah Mayberry Mishoe, who was the grand-parents ofIsabella Mishoe, Preston's 2nd wife).

Arnold enlisted in Co.E of the 26th S.C. Infantry, in the Charleston District on 18 Feb 1864. Hefought with, as best as I can trace it, Gen. A.P. Hill's division, under a Gen. Hagood. He wascaptured on 03 Apr 1865 at the battle for Amelia Courthouse in Virginia, and remained in a prison atPoint Lookout, Maryland until signing the oath of allegiance to the USA on 22 Jun 1865. The warhad ended on 09 Apr 1865 but those "Grand old boys of the South" wouldn't sign the oath until theywere absolutely sure that the South had "just gotten tired and decided to rest a spell.

There is a story of Arnold and some soldier buddies sitting on a fence during the close of the warand as Gen. Robert E. Lee, rode by one of them hollered and ask him what were they going to eat, atwhich time, Gen. Lee told them that he would share what he had with them. The Gen. thenproceeded to dismount and pullout a handful of acorns. I know this is true because in my study andresearch of the war I have often read of this inci- dent, though no names of the soldiers are evermentioned. On Arns release papers, he is described as 5 ft. 8 1/2. in. tall with brown hair, grey eyesand light complexion.

After being released, Arnold did, I suppose, as the rest of the soldiers, he walked home. His brother,Ash, had been captured on the 06 Apr 1865 and was released at Newport News Virginia on 26 Jun1865. There is no record of their walking home together, but I know when they and all the vetsreturned, it was to a land that had once been plentiful and now, not only were they ragged, starvingand crawling with lice and sick, they had to come home to nothing. . . . The oldest brother Solfought from 1861 until May of 1865 with Gen Arthur M. Mannigault (man-nee-go)'s army on theWestern Front in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and at the close of the war were paroled in N.C. Solstayed in N.C. and on 22 Feb 1866, a lady that Sol was engaged to died, while giving birth to a littlegirl.

Ash came home and married Dorcas Cannon the daughter of Jesse and Tebitha Cannon. Ash andDorcas's first child was born in Sept. of 1868. They owned a farm below Methodist Rehoboth on a

road to the right, where Ash also had a cooper mill. He made knives repaired bell-clappers and otherfarm tools. They raised 8 boys and 3 girls. The 1900 census shows Ash, with his family living inBayboro and after Ash died in 1909, the 1910 census shows Dorcas living with her son A.L. jr.

In the last part of 1866 or first part of 1867, Arnold married Mantha Cyntha Floyd (1910 census listher as Cyntha Alford) the daughter of Lewis Hugh Floyd and Sintha Strickland Lewis Hugh was theson of Lewis Floyd and grandson of James Floyd Sr. The Floyds settled Floyds "Mill" Townshipbefore 1800 they built the school and Methodist church. Many of the Floyds were ministers and allwere big land owners. Through hard work and inheritance Lewis H. owned approx: 3300 acres ofland at "Poor Hope Plantation" and "Cedar Creek Plantation". When Lewis Floyd died in 1844, heleft "Cedar Creek" with 2400 acres and a very large, personal estate, also he left his youngest son,Lewis Hugh, as the administrator. He was unable to get his sisters and brothers to agree on asettlement, so he got the judge to auction it off where he bought 1900 acres of the land and a lot ofthe personal estate. The governor of S.C. had earlier granted land to Lewis H., so his home placewas "Poor Hope". This is where Mantha as well as her brothers and sisters grew up. . . . The oldhouse stood 150 yds. left of the old Floyd cemetery. . . . . The Floyd cemetary was done away within the 1930's and the graves were moved to Anderson Cemetery, off the highway 701 about Gurley.Mantha's mother, Sintha, was the daughter of Matthew and Jerusha Strickland, who were wealthypeople.

Arn and Mantha's first child was born in Jan. of 1868, they named him after Mantha's dad, Lewis H.,but for life he was called H. In the 1870 census Arn was not living in Horry and Mantha was livingwith her mom and dad with her son H. My grandad as well as other people, say that Arn and Manthaseparated for some time after H. was born. He also told why they separated, but I think everyoneshould draw their own conclusion's as to why. Arn went to N.C, to visit relatives and to see Sol. Solcame back in the winter of 1870 and married Elizabeth Mincey, daughter of Jesse and SusannahMincey. Sol gave the little girl, Maggie (Magdalene) to Duke and Feraby to keep. He and Elizabethbought a farm at Moores' mill just above Mt. Trolley church and there they raised 4 boys and 5 girls,a set of twins died at birth. Maggie grew up and married Wingate Hilbourn, she died on 19 Nov1948. She is buried at Old Gethsemane. Sol moved to Bayboro about 1901, he died in March of1914 and is buried at Old Gethsemane, his wife is buried at Old Dorman graveyard. Sol'sgranddaughter, Eva Squires, lives 100 yds. from where Sol's old house was.

When Arn returned from N.C., he and Mantha reconciled. Their next child, William Gaston, wasborn in May of 1875. On 23 Dec1875, Arn bought ,200 acres from Mantha's brother, Samuel Q.Floyd for $300.00. The land was on the south side of Lake swamp and on Joiner Swamp. GeorgeM. Johnson was the notary with J.W. Holliday and Benjamin Holt as the witnesses. If you go to theend of Alford road beside Woodrow and Eloise Perritts house look to the left toward an old barn andyou can see where the old house sat that Arn and Mantha raised their children in. Tobacco became areally money crop about 1880, it replaced cotton, enabling southerners like Arn to make some realmoney. Along with farming Arn went in the turpentine business, so he and Mantha were prosperous.I say this because in 1878, Arn bought 111 acres in Socastee Township, which was being developedby Capt. Samuel S. Sarvis and J.E. Dusenbury, for $111.00 though I cannot find where he ever soldit. Arn and Mantha had a hand in the formation of Hall Branch School, it sat near the pond besideWoodrow and Eloise house. Benjamin Holt taught school there and Mr. Harvey Holt can remembergoing to school there with Elbert Alford who could "run like a deer".

Arnold is remembered as a man who had very little to say and for the most part, stayed to himself.

He evidently was a sharp businessman because on 17 May 1906, Arn managed to lease to J.E. Bryanthe timber rights on the homeplace for 10 yrs., for the sum of $450.00, with Arn having the right tocut all the firewood he might need. Also J.E. Bryan could not cut the timber unless it was 12 in.thick 12 in. from the ground. Arn also sold, to his son Heywood, 50 acres of the homeplace for$300.00 and bought it back in 1910 for $300.00. On the 05 Nov 1910, Arn sold the entire homeplaceto the Realty Loan & Insurance Co. of Darlington, for $150.00 down and the balance of $2600.00 tobe paid 10 Jan 1911, Curley and Hattie Alford witnessed the paper. The Realty Co. paid the balanceon the 19 Dec 1910, at which time Arn bought for $1500.00, 23 acres in Floyds township, 4 acres onfifteen mile bay and 24 1/2 acres north of the Sandy-Bluff Road to the corner of AthensSchoolhouse. On 26 Jan 1911, Mantha paid Arn $500.00 for the 23 acres in Floyds and the 4 acreson fifteen mile bay. Arn bought this same land back from Mantha's estate (she died in 1913) in1914. R.A. and W.G. Alford witnessed the paper.

I feel sure Mantha inherited land from her dad, who died in Nov. of 1885, because I know thatHeywood, Gaston, and Preston received a farm from their parents and I believe H. and Rufus didalso, but again no land transfers were recorded at the courthouse. If you go to Cedar Creek, take thehighway straight beside the church and in a couple of miles or less you'll see on your left, the small, white two story house that Arn and Mantha lived in until their death. Go about another mile and onyour left you'll see the old church, look 200 yds. ahead and to the right and you'll see the oldmercantile store. Take the road (dirt) to the right and follow it around for about a quarter of a mileand on your right in an opening you'll see Gaston's old house, barn and farm. Two or three.hundredyds. farther and you're where grandaddy Preston had his "shootout" with 2 or 3 over their con- ducttoward his kids in about 1927. He broke his gun stock beside one of their heads, shot with the restand went home, sat in the yard and let grandma Izzie pick the shot out of his back. Also look to leftand you'll see where Preston's house was that burned under "mysterious" circumstances right afterthe shootout.

Mantha had a cancer on her wrist but she got over it. Later she had one come under her arm and thisis the one she died of. Nina (Heywoods daughter) says she remembers her dad taking her and hersister to see their grandmama on a Sunday, right before she died, and she pulled them on the bedwith her and hugged and picked at them a little. This was the last time she saw her. Arn died of astroke in 1917, Preston signed his death certificate.

I can only guess, to some extent, as to the character of all these people because the only ones livingthat knew them is Brant and Harvey Holt. Brant says, that when his mother died he went to live withMantha and Arn (his grandparents). He says he never heard Arn speak rough and he was good toBrant. He says Mantha was a good person to him but she "meant what she said." Mr. Holt gives Arnand Mantha a good name, as he does all the Alfords. He says they were Christian law-abidingpeople that didn't bother anyone nor did they walk away from trouble. I have no proof, yet, but it hasbeen said that Mantha and Arnold had a lot to do with the formation of Old Gethsemane church.

We found an Amelia and Joshua H. Word (Ward) in 1860 in Columbus Co., NC. Living with thefamily is Elizabeth and George Washington Spivey and 6 of their children. We had assumed thiswas Amelia Norris, daughter of Priscilla and William Norris, and she has her cousin living with her.

1860 Census for Columbus Co., NC: Joshua Ward 41, Farmer, with wife Amelia 35, and children David 12, A. J. 11, (Female), J. N. 9, (Male), J. B. 7, (Male), Frances 6, (Male), M. 5, (Male),Joseph 4, Andrew 2, and E. J. 4 months (Female). All were born in North Carolina.

There is another possible Amelia Norris of the right age in the county. She married William Boswellb. about 1814. The 1860 Census of Columbus Co., NC: Wm. Boswell 46, Amelia 31, and Celia 12.The 1870 Census of Columbus Co., NC: Milly Boswell 43 is living with Joseph and Molcey Sellers. The 1880 Census of Columbus Co., NC: William Boswell 65 with Milly 40.

On Ancestry World Tree there are arguments for Amelia Norris being the wife of Joshua Ward, butthere are also arguments for another Amelia Gore nearly the same age being the wife of JoshuaWard. We thought that the wife was probably Amelia Norris because there were other familymembers living with them in 1860. She seemed the logical choice. There are sites on the Internetthat say that he married both of them, and that some of the children's death certificates say theirmother was Amelia Norris, and others say their mother was Amelia Gore. In the 1900 CensusJoshua and Amelia are listed with one child. They state that they have been married 60 years.

I have the old deeds where Arn's children sold the landArn left them at his death in 1917, so Gaston must not have left til, like Brant says, in1922. I have heard so much bad said about Gaston and after talking to a lot of people, Idon't believe all was his fault. I spoke with Ruth, Elbert's widow, and she said Elbertdidn't talk a lot about it, though he did say he went to visit his dad in Florida but his dadsent him back home. SC Death Certificate #12419 on file with AAFA: Cause of death: "Paralytic - sudden attack - nophysician - died before physician was called."

Family group record prepared by Johnny O. Sarvis has death as Jun 21 1937.

From Johnny Sarvis:

Joseph Preston Alford - Known as "Pres", this was my grandfather and though I never knew him, could talk of him and ask questions for quite awhile. Preston was born in 1877 and was called up forthe Spanish-American War in 1898, but never had to go. Preston's first wife was Ruth MagnoliaSkipper, they married in approx: 1898 and had 5 kids. In June of 1911, "Nollie" gave birth to their5th child, Maggie, and a few days later she died, she was buried at Methdotist Rehoboth. Prestonmarried next, my grandmother, Isabella Mishoe Gerald. She was the daughter of John HamlinMishoe, who was the son of Noah Mayberry Mishoe, who was in the calvry in the "WAR" and laterserved as magistrate. John H.'s mother was Isabella Johnson, he was the grandson of John andFrancis Mishoe. My grandmother's mother was Annie Holt, she was the daughter of Benjamin Holtand Jane Grimes. Her grandparents were Egbert Holt and Ann Grainger, who was the son ofWilliam Holt, a minister, from Ireland and Milly Dorman. Benjamin Holt was a lieutenant in the"WAR", and died a lawyer in Marion.

Preston fathered 7 children by Isabella. Grandmama had first married Everett Gerald and had 3children by him. Everett died in 1909. Grandmama said Preston was the most honest person she everknew. Grandaddy farmed, fished and trapped for fur in Lake Swamp to make a "living." Mr. Holtsaid people always said that "there weren't no hide left in that swamp by the time Pres and Heywoodgot through." Preston served as a deacon in his local church. He is described as being a veryprincipled man that stood up for what he believed in, never have I heard anyone say that he was notfriendly or nice to people. He stood over 6 ft. tall, broad shouldered and was built muscular. Mr.Holt says "if a bale of cotton was in Preston's way, why he would just pick it up and move it out ofthe way." Grandaddy had a stroke in 1929 or 1930, and for the rest of his life until his death in 1937,he was crippled or pretty much an invalid.

HEYWOOD ALFORD - I can remember this man and I sure wish I had talked to him a lot more than Idid. In the 1880 census (he was born in 1879), Heywood's name is listed as Hagwood and I do believeArnold meant to name him after the Gen.Hagood, that Arn served with in the War. At any rate, Heywoodfarmed and trapped for a living. He married Nellie Barnhill and they had 10 children. I remember goingto see Uncle Heywood in Fair Bluff, N.C., when I was a little boy. I can remember going to visit him inthe nursing home. I have recently spoken to his daughter Nina. and to his son Norwood, whose sonRonald is now the commander of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

RUFUS ARNOLD ALFORD - Born in 1882, Rufus spent some time in Florida, with theturpentine business. He returned and married Harriett Walker Lane, in about 1909. In talking withhis daughter, Eula, she said her dad really liked Florida and would probably have went back, buthe was raising a family and his wife didn't really like the idea of going so far away from the

family. Rufus served as a deacon at Gethsemane Church for as long as his health would permitand then was made an honorary deacon for life. Eula can remember the young deacons coming tosee "Uncle Rufie" when they were confronted with a church or business matter that needed somegood "wise counseling." Rufus and his wife raised 8 children, of which I know Eula, Eloise andErnestine. Though Eula is a couple of years older than me, we have always enjoyed a specialrelationship. and she has been very helpful to me. Rufus was always involved in, and willing toserve his community in any way he could. The farm that Eloise lives on was part of what Rufusowned and if you trace back. you'd find that it is part of the old Arn Alford homeplace. I do hopethat it wilL remain in their family.
