McLACHLAN PIONEERS

Hugh McLachlan (1786-1849) and Catherine McCallum (1786-1874), natives of KilmartinArgyllshire Scotland, were married in 1807. They were blessed with a family of fourteen, nine ofwhom sailed with them form Glasgow in June 1830. Four had died before migration. Theyoungest was born in Canada. They arrived at Port Glasgow in September. On November 12,1830, they reached N1/2, L1, C8, Mosa to start life anew.

McLACHLAN PIONEERS

Hugh McLachlan (1786-1849) and Catherine McCallum (1786-1874), natives of KilmartinArgyllshire Scotland, were married in 1807. Neil D. McCallum Honored at Golden Anniversary Fete

Mr. and Mrs. Neil D. McCallum, former residents of Upland, recently celebratedtheir golden wedding anniversary at a family party given at their San ClementeHome. The McCallums moved to the West End in 1927 and resided at 367 W.Ninth St., Upland, unitl 1955 when they moved to San Clemente.

West End families attending the anniversary party were Mr. and Mrs. LloydMcCallum of Cucamonga, their sons, John and Neil, and their daughter, Jean;Jimmy and Donnie McCallum, sons of late Hughie McCallum, and Mr. and Mrs.Marion Maxwell of Upland, Mrs. Maxwell is Mrs. Neil McCallum's sister.

Mr. and Mrs McCallum were married in Yellowgrass, Saskatchewan, Canada in1910 and Mr. McCallum was a contractor in Upland for some 28 years. DonaldMcCallum, of San Clemente, Mr. McCallums brother and best man at the wedding ahalf a century ago, was present for the celebration as was Mrs. Howard Suddaby ofEdmonton, Aleberta Canada, maid of honor at the 1910 wedding, Mrs. Suddaby isMrs. McCallum's sister.

McCalIum, Neil and Alice (Gimby)by Amy (Gimby) Suddaby

Neil McCallum born in 1885, came West from near London, Ontario, andhomesteaded on S.E. 18-8-18. He made his home for a few days at Jarrett's whereAlice and I were visiting (Gimby girls from Yellow Grass). I think old Cupid had hisdarts out flying that Easter, as Neil made many visits to our home.

The railroad kept advancing and the town of Forward sprang up. Neil was acarpenter. Because his services were in demand, his two brothers came to help.Dan worked with Neil on the buildings, but they all worked together to build a nicehouse on the homestead. Archie also worked the farm.

On June 22, 1910, Alice became the bride of Neil McCallum. Dan was groomsmanand I (Amy) was the bridesmaid. After a short honeymoon in Regina, the couplemade their home at Forward with the two brothers, Archie and Dan.

That fall a "Y" was made to allow the train to return to Weyburn. By 1911, therailroad reached Ogema.

After Alva Margaret was born on August 11, 1912, the family moved to Assiniboia.The three men went ahead to build a house. When the house was ready, Alice andAlva followed by car. The men were able to find work. They built Ball's Store. (Mr.Ball had moved from Yellow Grass.)

Lloyd was born December 29, 1913. After a few years they moved back to thestone house on Alice's father's farm at Yellow Grass where Hughie was born onDecember 23, 1919.

Good times had changed. Because of poor yields and hordes of grasshoppersravaging the crop, Alice and Neil sold their farm and moved to Upland, California.Alice's parents and sisters had already settled there and once again Neil had foundwork.





In 1928, they came to Alberta and built a fine house, near Lavoy, about eighty milessoutheast of Edmonton. Archie had returned to Ontario to care for his father. Danwas married and homesteading at Val Marie, Saskatchewan. After his wife's deathhe returned to Neil and Alice's home in California, where he died.

In 1946 and '47 Howard, my husband, and I visited the McCallums' in Upland,California. They had bought an orange grove with beautiful buildings. Hugh washome from the Air Force, where he was Major. He and his wife, Charlotte, with thetwo boys, Jimmie and Donnie, with Alva and her two, Stuart and Leah, made alively family Christmas that winter. Alva's husband, John McLaughlin, had passedaway. The men built a home for Hugh and his family. Hugh passed away in 1948.

Alice and Neil celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in the city of SanClemente in 1960. We, the attendants, were there, Dan and myself, Amy Suddaby.

A few years later Alice and Neil made a trip to Canada. Their first stop was at thehome of our sister, Evelyn, Mrs. Fred Harris, in Vancouver. On Sunday morning themen were reading the papers. Neil had slumped over in the chair and passed awayin 1962. His body was flown to Ontario, California, where it was interred in a cript.Alice moved into an apartment, owned by her daughter, Alva and her husband,John Landell. Alice lived there until her illness took her to a nursing home, whereshe died in 1977 at 85 years.

Lloyd lived at Cucamonga, California, with his wife, Marion, and three children,John, Jean, and Neil. The children and Marion lead very active lives after Lloyd'spassing on October 31, 1980. Alva and John Landell are retired but active in therestaurant business. Their families live near them in Capistrano, California.

NEIL DUNCAN MC CALLUMUPLAND - Funeral will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Richardson-Peterson Chapeland interment in Bellevue Cemetaery for Neil Duncan McCallum, 77, of SanClemente, who died Sept. 2 in Vancouver, B.C.

McCallum was retired contractor and citrus rancher who lived in Upland for 31 yearsuntil his retireemnt in 1955. He was born in Yellow Grass, Canada, Feb. 23, 1885and lived in California for 38 years.

Survivors included the widow, Alice Irene of San Clemente; a daughter, Mrs AlvaMcLaughlin of San Clemente; as son, Lloyd, of Cucamongas, seven grandchildrenand six great-grandchildren.
