First Generation

1. John DODGSON was born before 1732 in Hexthorpe, YKS.

General Notes: Once upon a time, a very long time ago (in 1751 to be exact) there was a young chapcalled John DODGSON, who lived in the small Yorkshire village of Hexthorpe. He had a wife, Sarahand a young child called William. The familly were very poor and had to rely on assistance from theparish to survive. He was offered a job as a weaver's assistant in the adjacent village of Bentley, but theBentley parish elders would not allow him to move to that village. They said that if he could not earn enough to keep himself and his family the parish of Bentley wouldhave to give him charity, and as that meant it would come out of the pockets of the elders of the parish(who were very rich) they would not have it. Things were very hard in those days - if you were apauper. John complained to the elders of Hexthorpe, saying that if he moved to Bentley he would be able towork at the weavers and support his family but that if he stayed in Hexthorpe he would have to live offthe parish (and that meant off the parishelders). The Hexthorpe elders liked this argument (it meant they could save some money and get rid of apauper family), so they agreed to do something about it. They drew up a legal document agreeing totake John Dodgson and his family backif they fell on hard times if Bentley would let them live in that parish for the time being so he could takeup the job on offer as a weaver's assistant. So John and Sarah, with little William moved to Bentley where John eventually became a weaverhimself. He did well and never had to rely on the charity of the good folk of Hexthorpe. He had fourmore children in Balby. His youngest son wascalled Francis. He was a Husbandman and he had three wives (presumably not all at the same time) -they were Ann Machine, Cybele Sykes and Ann Ogden. He was 56 years old when he married Ann. Hisson was a stonemason and he had grandchildren but all his grandsons died young so that branch of thefamily died out. John (of Hexthorpe) had a second son also called John and he too was a weaver by trade. He had a largefamilly, including four sons, three of whom left descendants, so he must also have had a wife, possiblycalled Ann. This second John, had a son Thomas who became a cordwainer. Thomas did very well for himself andas well as his shoemaking business he was landlord of the local pub, called "The Druid Arms"). Heseemed to like pubs as in the census of 1851 wefind him at a pub called "The Three Horse Shoes" at Doncaster Bridgefoot . Ten years later he isrecorded as owning two more pubs in Doncaster,"The White Lion" and "The Royal Lancer". Thomasmarried a local girl, Mary Windle in 1812, and theyhad seven children, including William Dodgson who married Sarah Ramsden and carried on the traditionof owning pubs. Not all John Jr's children did so well. His eldest child, called William (Thomas' elder brother) married agirl called Martha and in the 1820's we find them in Bentley on parish relief and must assume that theelders of Bentley had forgotten that three generations earlier the parish of Hexthorpe had agreed to takethen back. The wheel had turned a full circle.

Research Notes: The Bentley records for 30 odd years prior to 1751 show not a single Dod(g)son so Ithink it is safe to assume that John (Weaver of Bentley) was in fact the same person as John the pauperwho moved to Bentley from Hexthorpe in 1751 with the Settlement Certificate. Equally it is clear thatthe Dodgsons of Bentley are all descended from him - there are no entries in the Church Records whichcan not be satsifactorily identified with the family line.



I am also satisfied that Thomas (cordwainer and beer retailer) was the same as the Thomas Dodgson whoowned the two pubs in Doncaster as there were not others of that name in the area in any of the censusesand that the family kept up its pub owning tradition into the next generation. The key to taking this family further back is the whereabouts of John Dodson prior to 1751 when he wasa pauper in Hexthorpe. I wonder if there is a Settlement Certificate somewhere settleing him onHexthorpe. The elders of Hexthorpe in signing the certificate we have may have know that they couldpass him on again if he was thrown out of Bentley. Strangely the Settlement certificate was wittnessedby one Samuel Dodson, and this Samuel took the certificate to the Mayor of Doncaster for endorsement.Who was this Samuel? A relative maybe. Why did John receive the offer of a job in Bentley? Was itfrom a relative of his wife? We need to find John's marriage to Sarah and the baptism of their son William. Both would have takenplace not long before 1751 in the Doncaster area. I could only find one William son of John candidateand that was in Thorne. This is not too far away, but it is in 1736 and a little too early for someone whohad a brother in who married in 1778. Also I found the marriage in Thorne of John Dodson andElizabeth Grey who are probably the parents of the Thorne William - your Wiliams mother was(presumably) the Sarah who moved to Bentley with husband John in 1751. Perhaps you could search inthe Family Centre for these.

Research Notes: The Parish of Bentley with Arksey is situated in the West Riding of Yorkshire. It comeswithin the North Division of the Strafforth and Tickhill Wapentake. In 1851 it covered an area of 5, 128acres and had a population of 1,105, of which 563 were males and 542 were females. There were 261inhabited houses and 23 uninhabited houses.

General Notes: One can surmise that Margaret and Thomas met because both of their birthplaces hadprominent racetracks.She was a wonderful cook according to her niece Nancy Work.A search was done at the Probate Sub-Registry in York on May 24, 1996 for the Will of Margaret(Mamie) Clara BARNES from 1914 to 1917 and no record was found.

General Notes: Lived in York where he was a steward at the Cathedral. He was either asolicitor or an accountant with offices overlooking York Minster. Lived at Millgarth,Heworth, York.Millgarth was the first house on the right hand side of East Parade going out of the city. EastParade is about 1 mile to the east of the city centre in the suburb of Heworth. The house isstill intact - after many years of being converted to a corner shop selling various things, it hasjust been converted back to a dwelling house. Vyner street, which is still there, is off HaxbyRoad, about 200 yards to the west of Rowntrees chocolate factory, which would be beingconstructed when Alfred was born.

Research Notes: In the electoral register commencing May 1, 1929, there is only onedaughter listed, that being MAUDE VICTORIA, (this is a combination of the two girlsnames) & she is there with her parents until 1933, at which point Millgarth is vacated.This is most puzzling. If the electoral registration officer had originally made a name mistakein compiling the register in 1929, you would have thought that the family would have had thename corrected for the following years. And if both girls were living at home & both nameswere intended to be on the register, then only one of them would have been able to vote.

The History of the Aletaster It is not known when the first Inn was built on the corner of Chowdene Bank (LamesleyLane) and Durham Road. Early Bell Plans show buildings on this site.A diary started in 1809 by T. Bell, a surveyor, states there was only 4 Public Houses inLow Fell, The Buck (Beaconsfield), Cross Keys, Black Horse and the Duke of York. Therewas no mention of the George the IV.In 1824 it was decided that a new road should be built, connecting Low Fell with Birtley(Durham Road) this saved travellers the long climb up Sheriff Hill & over Gateshead Fell.To celebrate the building of the new road local magistrates then granted licences for fournew inns. Madeleine Hope Dodds in her ‘History of Low Fell’ refers to the “The Oiling ofDickies Wig” this was a stanza by one of Low Fells most famous sons, Thomas Wilson(1774-1858) celebrating the first Stage Coach to go along Durham Road on the 17th June1826. Wilson describes how Dickie and his friends “The Squad of Queer Chaps” called ateach of the new inns, The Ship, The Cannon, The Engine and the Sovereign (which Doddstakes to be the George the IV). The Dickie they referred to was Dickie Fenwick a mineowner of Sheriff Hill Hall and local wit.The first recorded entry of the George IV found to date is in ‘Richardson’s TradeDirectory’ for 1837. The Innkeeper was Thomas Charlton a Victualler and Horse Dealer.An advertisement on the front page of The Gateshead Observer dated 5th April 1845 offers‘to Farmer and Others’ pure Hen’s Nest potatoes at 5 shillings a load, apply George IV Inn.In 1885 plans drawn up by George W. Caris of Gateshead showed the original inn stood onthe other side of the narrow lane north of the pub. Old stone work can be seen in the gableend of the house that stands there now. The plans also show an idea for the conversion ofthe old tavern into a house.The building of the present inn began in 1885 on the instructions of Colonel Charles Reed.The Coach House was enlarged in 1898 and a cellar added in 1895 with the proviso that itcould not be more than 8 foot deep. 1906 plans show the addition of the garden that youcan see today.There were some landlords that held the licence for a considerable number of years. Thefirst being thirty-four year old Henry Tully of Kibblesworth, with his wife Hannah andfifteen year old servant Elizabeth Harrison. This is shown in the 1841 census returns. By1861 fifty-five year Henry was now married to twenty-five year old Elizabeth (we are notsure what happened to Hannah; perhaps we should dig up the Cellar). The Register ofAlehouses in Gateshead show more owners and landlords. In 1879 the owner was E.J. Reidof Newbiggin House Northumberland and the landlady was Jane McKie who applied for alicence renewal in the September of 1879. J Barras & Co Ltd took over ownership in 1888.Newcastle Breweries Old Properties Ledger (1890 - 1960) shows the acquisition of the pubon the formation of the brewery in 1890. Jane Mckie renewed the licence in 1891.Jane Mckie applied for planning permission for many of the houses in the surrounding areaincluding parts of Hutton Tce, Worley Avenue as well as the shops and houses you seedirectly opposite the pub. It’s also possible that Lockerbie House and Dryffe Houseadjacent to the inn were built by her, as they were constructed in the same era and the townof Lockerbie, with the river Dryffe running through was her place of birth. The licence waslater transferred to Arthur Henry Barnes in October 1904, then John W Carr in 1931,Thomas Arthur Allan in 1941, Horatio John Rhodes in 1947. The register then ends in1955.Trade Directories for 1934 and 1938 show J N Frazer then subsequently Paul Pilkington atthe George IV. It is not clear though as to whether they were managers or not.A photograph from 1910 shows a large notice welcoming cyclists. In 1938 the freeholdvalue of the inn was £38,000.The pub was for many years a Fitzgerald managed house. In 1989 Scottish & NewcastleBreweries decided it needed a new image. It reopened on the 6th June 1989 as The Aletasterpart of the T J Bernard group and became one of the areas top real ale bars. It passed intothe hands of the Spirit Group then finally Enterprise Inns.The Inn has evolved over the years from a rural tavern, coaching inn, local pub into the

ED operatednumerous vessels based out in West Africa particularly within the Niger Delta where a lot ofthe very small ports could not be reached by the main line ships. A lot of these ports had very shallow drafts and being adjacent to the various produceplantations. These services came under the jurisdiction of the Nigeria Manager based inLagos. Quite a lot of these ships carried an African Master whilst those considered to be alittle larger carried a European Master and Chief Officer and also a European Chief andSecond Engineer. They did tours of duty of about 9-12 months returning to the UK (or outto West Africa) per one of the main line ships.It is noted that H. Barnes served his Apprenticeship with the British and ArgentinaSteamship Company and obtained his Masters certificate at Hull on the 14th March 1903.Certificate number 029689. He (on joining ED's) resided at 73 Marsland Road, Sale.He joined ED's as Chief Officer on 12th February 1919 and was appointed Master, on the18th March 1919 aboard the s.s."Lagos". Some of the boats Harold Barnes commanded



were Lagos - Bida - Kwibo - Sir George. He also commanded other Branch Boats.On the 18th April 1937 he was in command of s.s. Kwaibo and it is noted "Conduct andability satisfactory but energy declining. Wishes to do another tour. It is clear that hereturned to West Africa because he was passed fit on 3rd November 1937 and tookcommand of the Kwaibo again. He returned to the United Kingdom arriving at Liverpool on11th November 1938 per the m.v. Abosso. I add that this was the flagship of the company;having been built at Cammell Lairds,Birkenhead in 1935. He probably retired/left thecompany on his return. It is noted that during his time he always received very good reportsfrom the Nigeria Manager. He also changed his address to 20 Norman Road, Sale. OBITUARY - SALE - SEA CAPTAIN'S DEATHMany expressions of sympathy have been made to the family of Captain Harold Barnes, 20Norman Road, Sale, whose death occured at his home on Sunday, in his 65th year.Captain Barnes, whose home had been at Sale for the past 27 years, had a long record ofservice in the Merchant Navy, including the war years of 1914-18, when he carried bothtroops and foodstuffs, and had his ship torpedoed three times. It was during the Great Warthat Captain Barnes received his first command with the Prince Line, which he had servedfor 15 years. General Notes: Balby is/was a funny place. In before the late 19th century it did not exist as an entity,but has been about since al least the 16th century as a district. The area was prior to the 19th century awet land (it is at sea level even though well inland) The local town was Tickhill and the towns ofWarmsworth and Doncaster were only just beginning. Roads ran along the spurs of land between theflooded valleys (called Carrs locally). Balby was the area were the road fron Tickhill on the Great NorthRoad (and Bawtry, an inland port) joined the road fron Warmsworth to Doncaster. You should be ableto see this on a map. There were a few houses near the junction and others scattered on higher landabove the Carr. This was Balby. In the late 19th century the wetlands were drained and as Doncastergrew (a centre for Railway train building and a coal rail head) it engulfed the road junction and Balby.Now Balby is an outskirt of Doncaster, and Tickhill has lost its port and its link with the Great NorthRoad (now the M1 motorway) and has become a small sleepy village.
