Notes for HENRY TYLER:

Henry Tyler of Shropshire, England was one of three brothers who settled in VA, MA, and CN.Henry, settled in Charles City, VA in 1652. In Vol. III, of the Virginia Land Register is the recordof a Patent in Henry Tylers name dated Jan 7, 1652, locating 254 acres in Middle plantation, VA,due to him by and for transporting to this colony six persons. Henry is a descendant of Wat Tyler,according to G.C. Greer in his "Early Virginia Immigrants".

At June Court 1672, Ann Tyler his relic, (Henry), entered a record of Deed of Gift disposing ofher separate estate among her three sons, Henry, John and Daniel. There were no heirs by his firstwife Mary. The three children of Henry and Anne went on to have many descendants:

Henry Tyler stayed in VA and his line is the 10th President John Tyler's line. John Tyler thesecond son of Henry and Anne moved to Hanover, VA and his line of descendants migrated toNorth Carolina and later to South Carolina. This is my line of ancestry (Henry, John, Moses,Needham, Moses, John, Elisha, Moses, Mattie). Daniel Tyler, the third son of Henry and Anne,was reportedly captured by the Turks and never heard from again.

1729 in York County, VA. He married ELIZABETH CHILES June 25, 1683 in York County,Virginia Colony. She was born Abt. 1666 in York County, VA, and died January 19, 1701/02 inYork County, VA.


Henry's mother, Ann, had remarried after his father's death leaving the step-father to finallyexecute his fathers will. In 1690, Henry and his borther John filed a petition in York Court torequire Martin Gardner, to divide between them the property left by their mother to their brotherDaniel, who had been carried off by the Turks to Algiers and had not been heard of for sevenyears. Henry Tyler leased his fathers land at Middle plantation to Martin Gardner in return for oneman servant and a house to be built.

Henry Tyler qualified as Sheriff, April 10, 1700 and again in 1702, he was Coroner in 1703, andSheriff again in 1705.

An order in York Court dated June 25, 1683, mentions Henry Tyler as having married ElizabethChiles, daughter of Walter Chiles and granddaughter of Lt. Col.Walter Chiles. Elizabeth's motherwas the daughter of John Page but there is no record of her name. But Col. John Page left a

legacy and land to John Tyler, son of Henry and Elizabeth Tyler and calls him grandson.

Elizabeth was a daughter of Mr. Walter Chiles and granddaughter of Lt. Col. Walter Chiles, hermother is thought to be the daughter of John Page but her name is unknown. Elizabeth may havedied giving birth to her last child.

Jan 23, 1685 John gave a reciept to Martin Gardiner, his guardian and stepfather, for the sharegiven him by his mother's Deed, Anne Tyler. John Tyler married Martin Gardiner's daughter Maryand moved to Hanover, VA. John's line of descendants migrated to North Carolina, and later toSouth Carolina. John Tyler had two brothers, Henry and Daniel. Daniel was captured by theTurks and never heard from again. Henry and his descendants stayed in VA and severalgenerations later his line produced the 10th President of the USA, John Tyler.

After the death of Henry's mother Elizabeth, his father re-married twice more. His fathers thirdwife was Edith Hardaway. In his fathers will, he leaves land and 10 negroes, and other property toEdith and upon Ediths death the negroes and other property are to be passed on to Henry.

1752 Henry went to Sussex County to live and was distinguished for raising a hog weighing 1200pounds. (Virginia Gazzette)

In Henry's will, dated 1772, Henry left to his godson, John Tyler, attorney, 500 acres of land and14 slaves and various articles of furniture. To his nephew WilliamTyler, a tract of land at Poplarswamp, and to his nephews William and John, his Mill.

In his father Henry's will, it states, To John my grandchild, son of John Tyler deceased, and hisdaughters Joanna, Elizabeth, Mary and Edith, each of them a young negro of value 10 poundsmoney.

John was a student at William and Mary College in 1704. Under the will of John Page, who wasthe father of his grandmother, he was given a tract of land in the Powhattan swamp, James cityand a legacy of fifty pounds.

In 1721, his negro slave, Priamus, was injured while firing the "great guns" on the aniversary ofhis majesty's coronation and John was paid 16 pounds sterling.

Louis Tyler was a lawyer, he moved to Charlotte County at the outbreak of the revolution. Heresided at "Red Hill" on Staunton River, which later became the home of Patrick Henry. His onlyson is buried with him at Red Hill.

Moses Tyler his oldest child is listed in the1800 Census as head of household, so we have to assume that Needham and his wife had Owenstill at home and a female child.

JOHN TYLER WAS THE 10TH PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. He was born atGreenway, the family plantation on the James River about 30 miles SE of Richmond, VA. At age12 he entered the grammar school division of the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg.He was graduated at 17 and studied Law. He was 6 feet tall, with blue eyes and brown hair. In1813 John married Letitia Christian and they had eight children. Letitia had a stroke and becamean invalid and died in the White house. 2 years later John married Julia Gardiner. They had sevenchildren. John Tyler was the first president to be married while in office, and the most prolifichaving 15 children.

John Tyler was elected as Vice president in 1840 and served only one month then he became

president at the death of President William Henry Harrison and served from 1841 to 1845.
